Book excerpt: Tight oil reservoirs have gained immense interest from the global oil and gas industry as a promising alternative to the rapidly depleting conventional hydrocarbon resources. As only a small fraction of the original oil in place can be commercially recovered during the primary production stage, the remaining oil in the matrix has always been the target of various Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques. In the first part of this study, the oil production from a fractured tight core sample was investigated under natural depletion and cyclic gas injection mechanisms performed above and below the bubble point pressure of the oil phase. For the first time, a whole core sample (4 inches in diameter) retrieved from an unconventional oil reservoir in North America was utilized for core-flooding tests under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions. After a primary depletion process, the first cycle of gas injection, whether commenced at a pressure above or below the P[subscript]bp, efficiently extracted and mobilized a considerable amount of oil from the tight matrix region. The efficiency of hydrocarbon gas on incremental oil recovery under a specific injection scheme was demonstrated. However, an effective methodology for better conformance control for the gas injection process was needed, which was addressed in the second part of this study. In the second part of the study, different experimental protocols were conducted to evaluate the essential role of foam in assisting the gas injection EOR processes. In the first stage of this research initiative, we systematically studied the impacts of key foam generation parameters, such as injected gas fraction (i.e., foam quality), surfactant concentration, brine salinity, operating pressure, and total injection rate, on foamability and foam stability of different foaming agents in the fracture media under extreme reservoir conditions. To this end, experiments were conducted on water-wet and oil-wet unconsolidated porous media. The performances of dynamic foam generated in situ with variations of multiple parameters were evaluated extensively to identify the optimal injection design for field applications. Among different surfactant candidates, one anionic and one amphoteric surfactant were selected for the pilot trials based on their performances in porous media of different wettability. The optimal foam quality and surfactant concentration for both foaming agents were identified to be about 85% and 0.4 – 0.5 wt%. In the final stage of this research section, we conducted two core flooding experiments to verify the critical role of foam in an EOR process using one of the selected surfactant candidates. Similar to previous core flooding tests, the experiments were conducted using a 4-inch diameter Minnesota outcrop sample applying identical testing procedures. After the primary production step, one cycle of foam injection boosted the fracture-matrix pressure gradient due to significant mitigation of gas mobility. However, the introduction of the aqueous phase was found to possibly trap a notable amount of oil within the fractured medium, as well as hinder the gas-oil countercurrent flow around the fracture-matrix interface.

Book excerpt: Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in tight and shale oil reservoirs has been a difficult problem due to their high degree of heterogeneity and low to ultralow matrix permeability. Primary recovery factor from these reservoirs is generally lower than 10% of original oil in place (OOIP), which leads to the need for non-conventional technologies for EOR in these reservoirs. A thorough understanding of mass transfer processes in ultralow permeability porous media is required for successful designs of EOR projects in tight oil formations and shales. In this study, two advanced EOR methods that involve the reinjection of field gas into shale and tight oil reservoirs are investigated. In the first part of this dissertation, field gas huff-n-puff process as an EOR method for shales is systematically investigated using an optimal experimental design. For a better understanding of the mass transfer mechanisms in nano-sized pores, the effect of pressure program (i.e., pressure buildup and drawdown during a huff-n-puff cycle), reservoir and crude oil properties, solvent selection, and huff-n-puff cycle duration on oil recovery were investigated. The results show that thermodynamic phase behavior, molecular diffusion, and convection could be related to oil recovery factor, production rate, and produced oil composition, forming a conceptual model for natural gas huff-n-puff in shale reservoirs. The second part of this dissertation presents the investigation of a novel EOR method targeting water-sensitive tight formations with sub-10-mD permeability. Mobility control is crucial for high recovery efficiency in these tight oil reservoirs with high heterogeneity. Preferential flow in high permeability zones (or "thief zones") results in poor sweep efficiency. Conventional conformance control techniques such as polymer gels or even aqueous foam may not be suitable for water-sensitive, low-permeability reservoirs. Therefore, a novel concept of non-aqueous foam for improving field gas miscible displacement has been developed. This foam process involves the injection of a raw mixture of natural gas liquids (MNGLs) with non-condensable gas and a foaming agent, which could improve the sweep efficiency by the generation of non-aqueous foam and maximize the displacement efficiency due to the solubility between the crude oil and MNGLs. A specialty surfactant has been developed which could stabilize non-aqueous foam in MNGLs-crude oil mixture for in-situ foam generation. A pore-scale study of this foam process has been conducted using microfluidics to relate oil displacement to foaming mechanisms. The findings from this microscopic study have been validated using core flooding experiments on tight rocks. It can be concluded from both pore- and core-scale studies that the in-situ propagation of non-aqueous foam could be achieved for the first time and delay the injectant breakthrough, resulting in significant improvement of sweep efficiency

Shale oil production has been feasible because of technological development for horizontal wells with multistage hydraulic fracturing. However, after primary production, more than 90% of the oil is left behind in shale oil reservoirs due to ultra-low permeability. For an average well the oil production rates fall sharply in the first year because of the extremely low permeability, micro-fracture closure, and large flow resistance at the matrix-fracture interface. To sustain oil production from shale oil, it is essential to develop enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques for unconventional reservoirs. In this dissertation, lab experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of chemical treatment, gas huff-n-puff, and/or both on EOR in shale oil reservoirs. Surfactant treatment on shale was studied. Static adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption behavior of surfactant on shale samples. An additive model was built to estimate the adsorption capacity given the mineral composition and TOC of shale samples. A series of surfactant screening process, including aqueous stability tests, contact angle measurements, interfacial tension measurements, and spontaneous imbibition experiments, was used to compare the performance of surfactants at reservoir conditions. Surfactant blends were compared with single surfactants, and the surfactant blends showed improved oil recovery compared to most single surfactants. Chemical blends showed good EOR potential in Eagle Ford formation, and the effects of solvents in chemical blends were investigated via spontaneous imbibition process. Chemical blends with solvents showed improved recovery compared to the brine-only controlled case, and the Green Solvent showed the most promising results among the five solvents tested. Cyclic gas injection was investigated with CO2 and hydrocarbon gases. CO2 huffn-puff showed about 40% oil recovery, and it was observed that the huff pressure to which the cores were pressurized with CO2 did not affect the oil recovery significantly as long as the pressure was high enough. A combination of chemical blend with CO2 was more effective compared to pure CO2 huff-n-puff (40% → 64%). The hydrocarbon gas (60% C1 + 35% C2 + 5% C3) showed a similar effectiveness as CO2, which can be used to replace CO2 depending on availability and cost. Also, a numerical simulation model was built to investigate the key parameters in the gas huff-n-puff qualitatively. The learning from these simulations can be used for future experimental design

Book excerpt: This book aims at presenting, describing, and summarizing the latest advances in polymer flooding regarding the chemical synthesis of the EOR agents and the numerical simulation of compositional models in porous media, including a description of the possible applications of nanotechnology acting as a booster of traditional chemical EOR processes. A large part of the world economy depends nowadays on non-renewable energy sources, most of them of fossil origin. Though the search for and the development of newer, greener, and more sustainable sources have been going on for the last decades, humanity is still fossil-fuel dependent. Primary and secondary oil recovery techniques merely produce up to a half of the Original Oil In Place. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes are aimed at further increasing this value. Among these, chemical EOR techniques (including polymer flooding) present a great potential in low- and medium-viscosity oilfields. • Describes recent advances in chemical enhanced oil recovery. • Contains detailed description of polymer flooding and nanotechnology as promising boosting tools for EOR. • Includes both experimental and theoretical studies. About the Authors Patrizio Raffa is Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen. He focuses on design and synthesis of new polymeric materials optimized for industrial applications such as EOR, coatings and smart materials. He (co)authored about 40 articles in peer reviewed journals. Pablo Druetta works as lecturer at the University of Groningen (RUG) and as engineering consultant. He received his Ph.D. from RUG in 2018 and has been teaching at a graduate level for 15 years. His research focus lies on computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Book excerpt: Water Alternating Gas (WAG) injection, commonly used in light to medium crude oil reservoirs, is a well-established technique for enhanced oil recovery combining the effects of two conventional oil recovery processes - water injection and gas injection. Immiscible water alternating gas (IWAG) injection is considered as an appropriate injection type dependent on economical and productive aspects. During the IWAG process, injected gas and oil are always in separate phases due to low-pressure maintenance, and it takes advantages in improving the stability displacement front in the macroscopic sweep as well as enhancing microscopic sweep in narrow pores. In order to check the optimum operational condition in which to apply IWAG injection at the field-scale, this injection process is usually tested as a core-flooding experiment, which is time-consuming and expensive. In this research, a model of core-scale IWAG injection is introduced with validation by Double Displacement Process (DDP) experimental data from previous research. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with CCD design is used to investigate the impact of five operational parameters on the volume of oil recovery. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is employed to determine the optimum combination of operational parameters to achieve the highest oil recovery factor for each operation scenario. The results indicate that all the main operational parameters, including timing, ratio, flow rate, slug size, and sequence, are significant for the response surface model. The PSO models reach good convergent results, with the volume of oil recovery for each case as 0.613, 0.650, and 0.666 pore volume. The performance of optimum IWAG injection is significantly better than only water-flooding or gas injection, with results approximately 5% higher than water-flooding, similar to double displacement process (DDP), and approximately 20% better than gas injection for the same operational conditions. These optimization tools are recommended for further research of WAG injection, both the experimental and simulation processes.
