Book excerpt: The present study focuses on the evaluation of the static and dynamic behavior of cementitious sandwich panels with parallel steel wire shear connectors. The study is divided into two parts: (i) large-scale experimental evaluation of different structural sandwich members subjected to different types of loading regimes, and (ii) analytical procedures to predict the behavior of such panels. However, and due to the lack of experimental data on the behavior of such sandwich panels, the emphasis of this study is on full-scale experimental evaluation. In the analytical part of the study, modified procedures, based on the experimental observations, following the general guidelines of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-11) were adopted. Also, the experimental program focused on assessing the out-of-plane flexural behavior of floor/roof sandwich slabs. Both simply supported and two-span continuous large-scale floor/roof slabs, with different boundary conditions and details, were evaluated. The experimental results were compared to the analytical predictions and well agreement between the results was achieved. The study also included several large-scale element experiments that were conducted on walls subjected to axial, shear, eccentric and flexural loadings conditions as well as exterior and interior corner connections. These tests are considered to be a pioneering research work that are not available to-date in published literature. A summary of the test setup, test procedures and experimental results that included quasi-static and cyclic load-displacement (P-ō) and Stress- Strain ([sigma]−[epsilon]) curves are presented and discussed herein. The comprehensive experimental program provided much needed information to the structural engineers that lack the knowledge on the service and ultimate performance of this type of sandwich structural elements. For example, the experimental results provided important information on the suitability of the sandwich panels with parallel wire connectors for the use as floors and roof slabs. In addition, the experimental results identified the different failure modes that are not similar to those for solid concrete elements. The simplified analytical procedures that followed, in general, the requirements of ACI 318-11 with justifiable modifications succeeded to provide conservative estimates to the capacity of each structural sandwich element evaluated in this study. Numerical design examples for typical residential buildings that were performed using the proposed analytical procedures are also presented. Conclusions drawn from this pioneering study is summarized and recommendations for future research work is presented in this thesis.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "To ensure sufficient composite action to meet structural strength and stiffness requirements in precast concrete sandwich wall panels, the designer must provide adequate shear transfer between concrete wythes. In a typical sandwich panel, shear transfer may be provided through several different mechanisms. These mechanisms include: (1) solid concrete regions; (2) mechanical connectors that pass through the insulation wythe; and, (3) bond between the concrete wythes and the insulation. The objective to the work presented in this report is to investigate the flexural behavior of sandwich panels and the contribution to composite action provided by regions of solid concrete, wythe connectors, and bond. Tests were performed on four full-scale precast sandwich wall panels. A Prototype panel was tested, which included regions of solid concrete in the insulation wythe, metal wythe connectors, and no attempt was made to disrupt the bond between the concrete wythes and the insulation wythe. The degree of composite action developed by each of the different shear transfer mechanisms was then evaluated by testing three additional panels that included only one mechanism of shear transfer (solid concrete, wythe connectors, or bond). It was found that, for the panel geometries and materials treated in this study, the solid concrete regions provide most of the strength and stiffness that contribute to composite behavior. Steel M-tie connectors and bond between the insulation and concrete contribute relatively little to composite behavior. Therefore, for design purposes, it is recommended that solid concrete regions be proportioned to provide all of the required composite action in a precast sandwich wall panel. A precast concrete sandwich wall panel constructed similarly to the Prototype panel treated in this study will behave as a fully composite panel in terms of service load-deflection behavior and flexural strength."

Book excerpt: To provide shelter as a basic need for growing world population (expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030 and 9.8 billion in 2050), it is necessary to efficiently use natural resources to develop effective building products. This research develops a value-added product from small diameter timber as a promising and innovative building material with greater structural and energy performance than comparable building construction materials. Due to high stiffness/strength-to-weight ratio, sandwich structures are widely used in many areas. Those with hollow cores have attracted interest because the cavities can be used to improve the thermal and acoustic performance. In this study, a novel sandwich structure with 3-D core(s) was developed for constructing building envelopes. Using FE model and a mechanics-based approach, a parametric study was conducted to design a biaxial corrugated geometry to serve as a core for the sandwich structure. After verifying the design, a large mold was fabricated to produce biaxial corrugated panels which were then used to fabricate 1- and 2-layered corrugated core sandwich panels. These panels were evaluated for their bending, axial compression, and thermal conductivity properties. Analytical models using high-order sandwich panel theory for beam configuration and classical plate theory along with third order shear deformation plate theory for full size sandwich panels were developed to capture their bending behavior within the elastic region. Hashin damage model implemented in Abaqus finite element software was used to capture load-carrying capacity of the sandwich panels. Since wood and wood-based products are viscoelastic, creep tests were conducted to understand the time-dependent behavior of the sandwich structure.Experimental results showed significantly higher performance for 2-layered corrugated core sandwich panels than SIPs and stud-walls under bending and axial compression loads. Normalized R-value of the panels filled with closed-cell foam was twice that of typical wood composite panels. Predictions of the bending stiffness and the load carrying capacity of 1-layered corrugated core sandwich panels using analytical and damage models agreed very closely with the experimental results (a difference of less than 1%). Wood strand sandwich panels developed in this study provide an opportunity to prefabricate panels for construction of residential building envelopes.

Carlsson and George A. Kardomateas focuses on some important deformation and failure modes of sandwich panels such as global buckling, wrinkling and local instabilities, and face/core debonding. The book also provides the mechanics background necessary for understanding deformation and failure mechanisms in sandwich panels and the response of sandwich structural parts to a variety of loadings. Specifically, first-order and high-order sandwich panel theories, and three-dimensional elasticity solutions for the structural behavior outlined in some detail. Elasticity analysis can serve as a benchmark for judging the accuracy of simplified sandwich plate, shell and beam theories. Furthermore, the book reviews test methods developed for the characterization of the constituent face and core materials, and sandwich beams and plates. The characterization of face/core debonding is a major topic of this text, and analysis methods based on fracture mechanics are described and applied to several contemporary test specimens. Test methods and results documented in the literature are included and discussed. The book will benefit structural and materials engineers and researchers with the desire to learn more about structural behavior, failure mechanisms, fracture mechanics and damage tolerance of sandwich structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandwich panels are being used increasingly as the cladding of buildings like factories, warehouses, cold stores and retail sheds. This is because they are light in weight, thermally efficient, aesthetically attractive and can be easily handled and erected. However, to date, an authoritative book on the subject was lacking. This new reference work aims to fill that gap. The designer, specifier and manufacturer of sandwich panels all require a great deal of information on a wide range of subjects. This book was written by a group of European experts under the editorship of a UK specialist in lightweight construction. It provides guidance on: * materials used in manufacture * thermal efficiency and air- and water-tightness * acoustic performance * performance in fire * durability * special problems of sandwich panels in cold stores and chill rooms * architectural and aesthetic considerations * structural design at the ultimate and serviceability limit states * additional structural considerations including fastenings, the effect of openings and the use of sandwich panels as load-bearing walls * test procedures The book concludes with some numerical design examples and is highly illustrated throughout.

Book excerpt: The Behavior of Sandwich Structures of Isotropic and Composite Materials presents the mathematics, descriptions, and analytical techniques in the growing field of sandwich structures. From a background in sandwich structures to thermoelastic problems of sandwich structures and sandwich shell theory, the book provides the knowledge needed to analyze, design, and optimize various sandwich structures. As one would expect from a book on sandwich structures, this volume discusses special failure modes such as face wrinkling and core shear instability. Coverage includes not only honeycomb cores, but also foam, web, and truss cores. An important topic in composite structure design, optimization is explored in two chapters on sandwich plates and sandwich shells. The author presents the optimization techniques in closed form and the methods are applicable to material selection and geometric design. The book also contains a set of problems and references at the end of each chapter. This text is ideal for engineers-in-training, as well as practical engineers who desire a comprehensive understanding of sandwich structures technology.
