The book discusses the advances in flow tubes and the measurement of ion-molecule rate coefficients and product distributions; the ion chemistry of the earth's atmosphere; and the classical ion-molecule collision theory. The text also describes statistical methods in reaction dynamics; the state selection by photoion-photoelectron coincidence; and the effects of temperature and pressure in the kinetics of ion-molecule reactions. The energy distribution in the unimolecular decomposition of ions, as well as the rapidity of ion-molecule reactions are also encompassed. Chemists, physicists, and people working in aeronomy laboratory and involved in space research will find the book invaluable.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 1990 Advanced Study Institute entitled "Fundamentals of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry" held at Mont Ste. Odile , Alsace, France, 25th June -6th July, 1990. The Institute brought together over 100 physicists, physical and organic chemists working on a wide variety of topics with gas-phase ion chemistry as the common theme. Many different viewpoints, making use of very different experimental and theoretical approaches, were brought to bear on the subject and provided a stimulating and up-to-date account of the subject. Although the Institute was built around the invited lectures, many specific points were addressed in workshops which consisted of informal discussion groups which were organised by participants during the Institute. This volume therefore contains not only chapters based on the lectures but summaries of many of the workshops which adds considerably to the diversity of information presented. This Advanced Study Institute was the fifth in a series of NATO-sponsored institutes devoted to various aspects of the physics and chemistry of gas phase ions. These meetings have been held every four years since the first, held in Biarritz in 1974, considered "Interactions between Ions and Molecules". The five volumes which comprise the proceedings of these meetings illustrate very clearly the many advances in theory and experiment which have taken place over the last 20 years.

Book excerpt: Cluster Ions Edited by Cheuk-Yiu Ng, Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University, lowa, USA Tomas Baer, University of North Carolina, NC, USA Ivan Powis, University of Nottingham, UK As a result of many recent advances in both experimental techniques and theoretical methodologies, increasingly detailed and sophisticated studies concerning the formation, structures, energetics, and reaction dynamics of state- or energy-selected molecular ions can now be performed. In order better to serve the ion chemistry and physics communities, each volume of this series will be dedicated to reviewing a specific topic emphasizing new experimental and theoretical developments in the study of ions. This first volume is devoted to the physics and chemistry of clusters. Measurement of cluster ion properties, made as a function of cluster size, are expected to shed some light on the basic understanding of the transition from gas phase to condensed matter. The interest in cluster research is also motivated by the important roles that clusters play in many practical fields, such as catalysis and microelectronics. The authors of the seven chapters making up this volume are among the most active researchers in their respective areas. This series will help stimulate new research directions and point to future opportunities in the field of ion chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas-phase ion chemistry is a broad field which has many applications and which encompasses various branches of chemistry and physics. An application that draws together many of these branches is the synthesis of molecules in interstellar clouds. This was part of the motivation for studies on the neutralization of ions by electrons and on isomerization in ion-neutral associations. The results of investigations of particular aspects of ion dynamics are presented in this volume. Solvation in ion-molecule reactions is discussed and extended to include multiply charged ions by the application of electrospray techniques. This volume also provides a wealth of information on reaction thermodynamics which is critical in determining reaction spontaneity and availability of reaction channels. More focused studies are also presented towards the end of this volume, relating to the ionization process and its nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are devoted to the elementary reactions of small molecules in the gas phase, with some emphasis on reactions important in combustion. The first three chapters cover experimental measurements made at high temperatures, mainly using shock waves and flames; the final chapter describes discharge flow methods near room temperature. The authors-all active in the fields they describe were asked to aim at a level intermediate between a textbook and a review, designed for readers not already familiar with this branch of chemical kinetics. We hope the book will prove especially useful to research workers in related subjects, to research students, and perhaps as source material for the preparation of lectures. The examples have been chosen to illustrate the theoretical basis of the topics rather than attempt a complete coverage. Professors Wagner and Troe describe the remarkable progress made in recent years in measuring dissociation rates for small molecules. Tests ofunimolecular reaction theories are usually made in the 'fall-off' region of pressure: the kinetics change from first order to second order as the pressure is reduced. For large molecules this region lies below atmospheric pressure and is relatively easily accessible. For molecules with four or less atoms, however, the fall-off region lies well above atmospheric pressure: it has been explored using the high pressure shock tube techniques developed by the authors.

Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanism, kinetics and dynamics of elementary gas phase reactions is one of the major goals of chemistry. Such understanding is also essential to predicting and understanding plasma dynamics and optical radiation associated with the spacecraft-atmosphere interactions. The objective of the present research was to provide, based on mainly the ab initio molecular orbital and some dynamics calculations, theoretical information concerning the potential energy surfaces that dictate the kinetics and dynamics of gas phase elementary reactions. The reactions studied include ion-molecule reactions, photochemical reactions and neutral elementary reactions. Many of the systems for which theoretical calculations were performed in the present research are relevant to atmospheric chemistry and chemical lasers. Many systems were chosen based on the experimental studies and in collaboration with scientists at Air Force Research Laboratory, in order to provide them with some new insight that is not easily available without theoretical studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a penetrating and comprehensive description of energy selected reactions from a theoretical as well as experimental view. Three major aspects of unimolecular reactions involving the preparation of the reactants in selected energy states, the rate of dissociation of the activated molecule, and the partitioning of the excess energy among the final products, are fully discussed with the aid of 175 illustrations and over 1,000 references, most from the recent literature. Examples of both neutral and ionic reactions are presented. Many of the difficult topics are discussed at several levels of sophistication to allow access by novices as well as experts. Among the topics covered for the first time in monograph form is a discussion of highly excited vibrational/rotational states and intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution. Problems associated with the application of RRKM theory are discussed with the aid of experimental examples. Detailed comparisons are also made between different statistical models of unimolecular decomposition. Both quantum and classical models not based on statistical assumptions are described. Finally, a chapter devoted to the theory of product energy distribution includes the application of phase space theory to the dissociation of small and large clusters. The work will be welcomed as a valuable resource by practicing researchers and graduate students in physical chemistry, and those involved in the study of chemical reaction dynamics.
