This book was released on 2000 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper deals with the comparison between thermal fatigue (TF) and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) testing for SRR99 superalloy. First, a measured TF mechanical strain-temperature (?m-T) profile between 200°C and 1100°C has been reproduced on a TMF specimen to allow for an estimation of the stresses and inelastic strains which occur during TF. Thermal-fatigue-based (TFB) ?m-T profiles were determined based on the measured TF profiles. These TFB cycles, together with the well-known out-of-phase profile, were employed for all of TMF tests. The comparison of the results reveals that the TF and TMF out-phase tests are more damaging in terms both of the applied stress and strain range, while the TMF out-of-phase test is more severe if the comparison is made in terms of the inelastic strain range. Finally, it is shown that the results can be rationalized quite well by plotting the fatigue lives as a function of the maximum stabilized stress (?max).

This book was released on 1972 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are given of an investigation of small-cycle thermal and mechanical fatigue in tubular speicimens of three nickel-based alloys under tensile stresses and temperatures approaching those experienced during actual operation. An analysis of the fatigue curves shows that the mechanical fatigue limit of these alloys is not below their thermal fatigue limit. (Author).

This book was released on 1993 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal-mechanical fatigue of IN-100, a cast nickel base superalloy, was previously shown to involve mainly early crack growth using either bare or aluminized specimens. This crack growth was found to be controlled by interdendritic oxidation. A model for engineering life to crack initiation is thus proposed to describe this microcrack growth phase using local stresses in a microstructural volume element at the crack tip. The identification of damage equations involves fatigue crack growth data on compact tension (CT) specimens, interdendritic oxidation kinetics measurements and fatigue crack growth on CT specimens that have been embrittled by previous oxidation at high temperature. The application of this model to life prediction is shown for low cycle fatigue and thermal-mechanical fatigue specimens of bare and coated specimens as well as for thermal shock experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the main achievements of a 36-month research program the main objective of which was to gain more insight into the problem of crack growth under thermal mechanical fatigue (TMF) conditions. The program was arranged into five technical tasks. Under Task I, the goal was to identify the crack propagation conditions in aircraft engines (hot section) and to assess the validity of conventional fracture mechanics parameters to address TMF crack growth. The second task defined the test facilities, test specimen and the testing conditions needed to establish the effectiveness of data correlation parameters identified in Task I. Under Task III, a computerized testing system to measure the TMF behavior (LCF and CG behaviors) of various alloy systems was built. A crack propagation test program was defined and conducted under Task IV. The test variables included strain range, strain rate (frequency) and temperature. Task V correlated and generalized the Task IV data for isothermal and variable temperature conditions so that several crack propagation parameters could be compared and evaluated.

Book Synopsis On Thermal Fatigue of Nickel-Based Superalloys by : CC. Engler-Pinto
Download or read book On Thermal Fatigue of Nickel-Based Superalloys written by CC. Engler-Pinto and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal fatigue (TF) behaviour of two single crystal nickel-based super-alloys, SRR99 and CMSX-4, is reported. Single edge wedge specimens are rapidly heated by induction heating of the wedge tip to a maximum temperature between 1000‡C and 1175‡C and cooled to 200‡C by forced air. A constant cycle period is employed for all experiments. The strain distribution along the edge of the TF specimens is measured. Changing the induction frequency leads to different strain ranges. CMSX-4 shows crack initiation always on cast microporosities. SRR99 presents an additional oxidation/spalling/re-oxidation mechanism under low strain loading. An "integrated approach" combining TF and TMF (thermo-mechanical fatigue) is proposed. The applied TMF temperature-strain cycle is deduced from the measured TF-cycle. Under this new temperature-strain cycle the crack initiation life and the total life in TMF for SRR99 are compared with the TF results.
