Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe Hispanic high school graduates’ experiences with access to technology in a southeastern suburban area near Atlanta, Georgia. Although there is research that focuses on factors that lead to Hispanics graduating from or dropping out of high school, the existing research has not focused on the experiences with technology among Hispanic high school graduates. The following research question guided this study: What are the described experiences with access to technology among Hispanic high school graduates near Atlanta, Georgia? Kearsley and Shneiderman’s engagement theory (1998) and Brown, Collins, and Duguid’s situated cognition theory (1989) was used to examine the results of this study. Participants were selected from a Hispanic educational advocacy group, located about 30 miles outside of Atlanta, GA. The participants included 7 Hispanic high school graduates, including both males and females. Participants were selected by a survey. Data were collected using questionnaires, a focus group, and journal prompts. Data analysis was conducted using Creswell’s (2014) multi-step approach. The findings revealed that the experiences with technology among Hispanic high school graduates is influenced by both educational usages, as well as personal usages. Furthermore, the findings revealed how the positive and negative experiences with technology prepared Hispanic students for post-secondary education and prepared them to face some of the challenges present during the Covid pandemic. Recommendations for future research include how these findings can guide future studies.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In the Latino/a community the drop-out rate has been very high not only in the states that have been traditionally known for a significant Latino/a population, but also in states with new Latino immigrants like Ohio. Therefore, this is a national problem, which requires we find effective ways of reaching out to the Latino/a population. In relation to new technologies, there are factors that indicate that Latinos/as in this country are experiencing the impact of the long and complex "digital divide". Problems of connectivity and real physical access to these new technologies still exist. In the last decade, information communication technologies like the cellular phone, the computer and the Internet have started to affect the way people communicate, the way they learn, and the way they do business. In this context, this qualitative study attempts to add insights to the understanding of how young Latinas immigrants access and use new information communication technologies in their lives, affects their sense of identity, success in school, role in the workplace, and communication networks. In interviews and observations with twelve Latina high school students and four teachers from a public school in Columbus, Ohio, the participants were asked to share their views and experiences in relation to new information technologies. The research data were analyzed using N.U.D.I.S.T, a qualitative analysis tool. Some of the findings include the importance of access and type of technology available with the capacity of connectivity, involvement and uses in the lives of Latinas. In relation to the construction of identity in cyberspace, they consistently changed their names and sometimes, nationality, age and gender. Additionally, Spanish and English languages differ when finding school information or communicating in the web, and some uses of ICTs by my participants include: study, gathering information, communication and entertainment. I hope these findings contribute to our understanding of the "digital divide" and the Latinos/as involvement with new technology and will motivate future research in this interesting area of work.

Book excerpt: On August 8-12, 2010 the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), convened the Colloquy on Minority Males in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), following the release of several reports highlighting the educational challenges facing minority males. The NSF recognized the need to gather input from research communities that focus on minority males about how to frame investigations of gender-based factors that impact learning and choice in STEM education (both at the precollege and higher education levels) and the workforce for minority males. There was particular interest in framing a research agenda to study how interactions between minority males and societal and educational systems (both formal and informal) encourage or discourage the young men's interest and persistence in STEM. In addition, NSF hoped to gain community input to inform the parameters of a future NSF research program that could effectively address minority male participation in STEM. The Colloquy was held at the Mt. Washington Conference Center in Baltimore, Maryland, with approximately 40 participants, most of them researchers in education, psychology, sociology, mathematics, and physics. Colloquy on Minority Males in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics presents a summary of the Colloquy's breakout and plenary discussions, which addressed (a) research questions articulated in the breakout groups together with theories and methodologies to begin to address these questions; and (b) considerations for a potential research solicitation for the NSF, with major areas of inquiry concerning access, participation, and success for minority males in STEM. This report reflects the views of the individuals who participated in the plenary and breakout groups. It has been reviewed in draft form by persons chosen for their diverse perspectives and expertise in accordance with procedures approved by the National Academies' Report Review Committee. The purpose of this independent review is to provide candid and critical comments that will assist the institution in making its published report as sound as possible and to ensure that the report meets institutional standards for quality and objectivity.
