Book excerpt: The 1970s were a pivotal decade for the US economy: deindustrialization broke the power of the labor unions and made possible the redistribution of income in favor of corporate profits; globalization and offshore investments opened alternatives to domestic nonfinancial capital accumulation; domestic productivity growth declined; and labor-saving technology empowered superstar corporations to rapidly gain market share. This book argues that the persistent fall in profitability, leading to the stagflation crisis, was a direct result of the transition from the Fordist phase of capital accumulation, based on large-scale manufacturing, to the neoliberal phase and the rising power of finance. Neoliberalism restored the power of rentiers but not the profit rates of nonfinancial corporations. Falling accumulation rates weakened the growth capacity of nonfinancial corporate firms and secular stagnation became the norm. Neo-Keynesian economists, Larry Summers and Paul Krugman, explained the persistence of secular stagnation with arguments borrowed from Alvin Hansen in the 1930s, such as the declining birth rate or the falling relative prices of investment goods, hence a shortfall of demand. In the Classical paradigm, profitability drives capital accumulation and falling profitability slows down growth. As the accumulation rate declined and the capacity growth diminished, breakdowns in supply links, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prevented large infusions of purchasing power to find matching levels of supply, hence the stagflation crisis returned. The book will be a great asset to researchers and scholars interested in the development of Classical Political Economy concerning issues related to inflation, stagnation, growing inequality, and the next phase of neoliberalism.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is at the cutting edge of the ongoing ‘neo-Schumpeterian’ research program that investigates how economic growth and its fluctuation can be understood as the outcome of a historical process of economic evolution. Much of modern evolutionary economics has relied upon biological analogy, especially about natural selection. Although this is valid and useful, evolutionary economists have, increasingly, begun to build their analytical representations of economic evolution on understandings derived from complex systems science. In this book, the fact that economic systems are, necessarily, complex adaptive systems is explored, both theoretically and empirically, in a range of contexts. Throughout, there is a primary focus upon the interconnected processes of innovation and entrepreneurship, which are the ultimate sources of all economic growth. Twenty two chapters are provided by renowned experts in the related fields of evolutionary economics and the economics of innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever heard the word "investing" before, but you have never understood what it really means? It's actually quite simple—it means making your money work while you do what you want. Basically, it's a different way of thinking about how to make money. While growing up, most of us have been taught that we can only earn an income by finding a good job—and that's exactly what most of us do. However, there is a big problem with this—if you want more money, you have to work longer hours. However, there is a limit to the number of hours a day we can work on—not to mention the fact that having a lot of money is not fun if we do not have the time to enjoy it. This is why rich people do not have a job—they have businesses that work for them. Think about it—you have a job that allows you to earn over 2000 dollars a month, but that takes you over 13 hours a day, 6 days out of 7, so about 11 remain—and usually, the hours of sleep should be at least 7–8 (for a healthy lifestyle). Considering also the displacements and the time lost to go to work, you have 3 to 4 hours left, where you most likely will use 2 for dinner in the evening. In the end, there are 2 actual hours of time per day, which do not allow you to enjoy life to the fullest. You will find yourself having a 2000-dollars-a-month salary (which, nowadays, is nothing) that will continue to accumulate, as you will not absolutely enjoy them in any way. This is what is often called the "rat race." Is there a solution? Yes, it exists, and it is to take part of your money and invest it properly in the financial markets. By doing so, you are letting it work for you. The possibilities are scary and extremely profitable. Do you want one example? Take a look at Apple's stocks. Apple's stocks have risen at a frightening rate in the last 10 years, from $10 to about $100. This means that with an investment of only $ 1,000, you would now have over 10 thousand dollars. This is the power of online investing—it allows you to grow your money in a totally automatic way. Unfortunately, there is no duplication of self to increase the time at work, but instead, you can create an "extension" of yourself—that is, your money—and put it to work. In this way, while you are working for your employer, or while you are at the bar with friends, you can still earn at the same time—thanks to the investment you made. In a very simple way, therefore, you can make your money useful, thus maximizing your earning potential, even if you do not receive an increase in your pay, or even if you do not decide to make an extraordinary one, or you are looking for a more remunerative job. There are many ways to do this. This includes investing your money in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, forex, CFDs or real estate (and many other things), or even starting your own online business (like affiliate marketing). Sometimes, people refer to these options as "investment vehicles," which is just another way of saying "a way of investing."

Book excerpt: The Clinton scandals. The Rise of militia and patriot groups. The proliferation of ?trash? TV. Record U.S. trade deficits. Isolated events, or is there some connecting thread? Susan Tolchin says it's anger?mainstream, inclusive, legitimate public anger?and it's not going to vanish until we as a polity acknowledge it and harness its power. How to tap into this pervasive political anger and release its creative energy without being swept away by its force is the dilemma of the 1990s for government leaders and citizens alike. The second edition of this acclaimed volume has been completed revised and updated to account for the ways in which recent events have contributed to the history, causes, and consequences of anger in American politics today. The book embraces positive solutions to problems we are all entitled to be angry about: economic uncertainty, cultural divisiveness, political disintegration, and a world changing faster than our ability to assimilate. Tolchin's solutions incorporate a renewed sense of community, enhanced political access, and responsive rather than reactive government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forces of industrialisation, urbanisation, globalisation and technological change have washed away the pre-modern outlook of most Latin American economies. Despite the improved opportunities of social mobility offered by economic modernisation, current income inequality levels (still) appear extraordinary high. Has Latin America always been unequal? Did the region fail to settle a longstanding account with its colonial past? Or should we be reluctant to point our finger so far back in time? In a comparative study of asset and income distribution Frankema shows that both the levels, and nature, of income inequality have changed significantly since 1870. Besides the deep historical roots of land and educational inequality, more recent demographic and political-institutional forces are taken on board to understand Latin America’s distributive dynamics in the long twentieth century.
