Book excerpt: On 29 February 1964, a group of European scientists met in Paris to discuss a subject of common interest, namely atherosclerosis research, with particular reference to international communication and collaboration. After a second meeting on 15 May 1964, they founded the European Atherosclerosis Group which was to com prise individuals engaged in the various disciplines of atherosclero sis research in Eastern and Western Europe. Since then this group has initiated multidisciplinary discussion and scientific collabora tion across Europe, in accordance with the objects and aims written in its statutes: 1. To hold colloquia and symposia dealing with research in the field of atherosclerosis and allied sciences 2. To encourage meetings and exchanges between scientists in the group engaged in the investigation of atherosclerosis 3. To encourage collaborative work between national and interna tional centers engaged in atherosclerosis research 4. To encourage the publication of reviews, etc. , on atherosclerosis research which may be considered of value 5. To promote research fellowships, particularly for younger research workers, for studies within the field of atherosclerosis and allied sciences 6. To accept dues, endowments, grants, funds, and bequests to be used for the above purposes The European Atherosclerosis Group has helped to bring together what was separated during the second world war and the postwar period in Europe and to reestablish ties with the leading American teams.
Book Synopsis Textbook of Vascular Medicine by : Rhian M. Touyz
Download or read book Textbook of Vascular Medicine written by Rhian M. Touyz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on the vascular biology and physiology that underlie vascular disorders in clinical medicine. Vascular biomedicine is a rapidly growing field as new molecular mechanisms of vascular health and disease are unraveled. Many of the major cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke and vascular dementia are diseases of the vasculature. In addition vascular injury underpins conditions like kidney failure and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This field is truly multidisciplinary involving scientists in many domains such as molecular and vascular biology, cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology and immunology and inflammation. Clinically, specialists across multiple disciplines are involved in the management of patients with vascular disorders, including cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons. This book covers a wide range of topics and provides an overview of the discipline of vascular biomedicine without aiming at in-depth reviews, but rather offering up-to-date knowledge organized in concise and structured chapters, with key points and pertinent references. The structure of the content provides an integrative and translational approach from basic science (e.g. stem cells) to clinical medicine (e.g. cardiovascular disease). The content of this book is targeted to those who are new in the field of vascular biology and vascular medicine and is ideal for medical students, graduate and postgraduate students, clinical fellows and academic clinicians with an interest in the vascular biology and physiology of cardiovascular disease and related pathologies.

Book Synopsis Eicosanoids, Apolipoproteins, Lipoprotein Particles, and Atherosclerosis by : Claude L. Malmendier
Download or read book Eicosanoids, Apolipoproteins, Lipoprotein Particles, and Atherosclerosis written by Claude L. Malmendier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma lipoproteins constitute a unique macromolecular system of lipid-protein complexes responsible for the transport of lipids from their sites of origin to their sites of utilization either as metabolic fuel or as structural components of cell membranes. Although studies on the role of lipoproteins in the mechanism of lipid transport are meritorious in their own right, the ever-increasing interest in chemical and functional properties of this remarkable class of conjugated proteins stems from the impressive evidence of their direct involvement in the genesis and develop ment of atherosclerotic lesions. The initial emphasis on neutral lipids and phospholipids as the most characteristic constituents of operationally defined lipoprotein classes has shifted in recent years to their protein moieties or apolipoproteins. The discovery of a number of apolipoproteins and characterization of familial hypolipoproteinemias as apolipoprotein deficiency disorders indicated that apolipoproteins play an essential role in maintaining the structural stability and integrity of lipoprotein particles. In addition to their role in the formation of lipoproteins, apolipoproteins were shown to perform a variety of functions in metabolic conversion of lipoproteins and their interactions with cellular surfaces. Results from several laboratories have demonstrated that the chemical and metabolic heterogeneity of operationally-defined lipoprotein classes is due to the presence of several discrete lipoprotein particles with similar physical properties but different and characteristic apolipoprotein composition. Thus, the apolipoproteins have emerged not only as essential structural and functional constituents of lipoproteins but also as unique chemical markers for identifying and classifying lipoprotein particles.

Provided is an assessment of the various ways in which personal control is invoked in a range of health-relevant issues. The current state of knowledge is summarized, and opportunities for new developments are highlighted. Three major sections address the role of control in job settings and its influence on health; the relationship of control to clinical problems such as pain, stress, and heart disease; and the pathways through which control affects behavior and psychobiological responses, from an experimental perspective.
