Book Synopsis The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups, Part 2 by : Paul Fong
Download or read book The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups, Part 2 written by Paul Fong and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in these proceedings of the 1986 Arcata Summer Institute bear witness to the extraordinarily vital and intense research in the representation theory of finite groups. The confluence of diverse mathematical disciplines has brought forth work of great scope and depth. Particularly striking is the influence of algebraic geometry and cohomology theory in the modular representation theory and the character theory of reductive groups over finite fields, and in the general modular representation theory of finite groups. The continuing developments in block theory and the general character theory of finite groups is noteworthy. The expository and research aspects of the Summer Institute are well represented by these papers.

He has also had a great influence on the development of algebra, and particularly group theory in China. The present volume consists of a collection of essays on various aspects of group theory written by some of his former students and colleagues in honour of his 80th birthday. The papers contain the main general results, as well as recent ones, on certain topics within this discipline. The chief editor, Zhe-Xian Wan, is a leading algebraist in China.

Book Synopsis A Course in Finite Group Representation Theory by : Peter Webb
Download or read book A Course in Finite Group Representation Theory written by Peter Webb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level text provides a thorough grounding in the representation theory of finite groups over fields and rings. The book provides a balanced and comprehensive account of the subject, detailing the methods needed to analyze representations that arise in many areas of mathematics. Key topics include the construction and use of character tables, the role of induction and restriction, projective and simple modules for group algebras, indecomposable representations, Brauer characters, and block theory. This classroom-tested text provides motivation through a large number of worked examples, with exercises at the end of each chapter that test the reader's knowledge, provide further examples and practice, and include results not proven in the text. Prerequisites include a graduate course in abstract algebra, and familiarity with the properties of groups, rings, field extensions, and linear algebra.

Book Synopsis Lectures in Abstract Algebra I by : N. Jacobson
Download or read book Lectures in Abstract Algebra I written by N. Jacobson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the first of three that will be published under the general title Lectures in Abstract Algebra. These vol umes are based on lectures which the author has given during the past ten years at the University of North Carolina, at The Johns Hopkins University, and at Yale "University. The general plan of the work IS as follows: The present first volume gives an introduction to abstract algebra and gives an account of most of the important algebraIc concepts. In a treatment of this type it is impossible to give a comprehensive account of the topics which are introduced. Nevertheless we have tried to go beyond the foundations and elementary properties of the algebraic sys tems. This has necessitated a certain amount of selection and omission. We feel that even at the present stage a deeper under standing of a few topics is to be preferred to a superficial under standing of many. The second and third volumes of this work will be more special ized in nature and will attempt to give comprehensive accounts of the topics which they treat. Volume II will bear the title Linear Algebra and will deal with the theorv of vectQ!_JlP. -a. ces. . . . . Volume III, The Theory of Fields and Galois Theory, will be con cerned with the algebraic structure offieras and with valuations of fields. All three volumes have been planned as texts for courses.

Book Synopsis Structure of a Group and the Structure of its Lattice of Subgroups by : Michio Suzuki
Download or read book Structure of a Group and the Structure of its Lattice of Subgroups written by Michio Suzuki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this monograph is the relation between the structure of a group and the structure of its lattice of subgroups. Since the first papers on this topic have appeared, notably those of BAER and ORE, a large body of literature has grown up around this theory, and it is our aim to give a picture of the present state of this theory. To obtain a systematic treatment of the subject quite a few unpublished results of the author had to be included. On the other hand, it is natural that we could not reproduce every detail and had to treat some parts some wh at sketchily. We have tried to make this report as self-contained as possible. Accordingly we have given some proofs in considerable detail, though of course it is in the nature of such areport that many proofs have to be omitted or can only be given in outline. Similarly references to the concepts and theorems used are almost exclusively references to standard works like BIRKHOFF [lJ and ZASSENHAUS [lJ. The author would like to express his sincere gratitude to Professors REINHOLD BAER and DONALD G. HIGMAN for their kindness in giving hirn many valuable suggestions. His thanks are also due to Dr. NOBORU ITo who, during stimulating conversations, contributed many useful ideas. Urbana, May, 1956. M. Suzuki. Contents.

Book Synopsis Profinite Groups by : John S. Wilson
Download or read book Profinite Groups written by John S. Wilson and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to be dedicated entirely to profinite groups, an area of algebra with important links to number theory and other areas of mathematics. It provides a comprehensive overview of the subject; prerequisite knowledge is kept to a minimum, and several major theorems are presented in an accessible form. The book would provide a valuable introduction for postgraduate students, or form a useful reference for researchers in other areas. The first few chapters lay the foundations and explain the role of profinite groups in number theory. Later chapters explore various aspects of profinite groups in more detail; these contain accessible and lucid accounts of many major theorems. Prerequisites are kept to a minimum with the basic topological theory summarized in an introductory chapter.
