Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of positive solutions to indefinite problems. The monograph intelligibly provides an extensive overview of topological methods and introduces new ideas and results. Sticking to the one-dimensional setting, the author shows that compelling and substantial research can be obtained and presented in a penetrable way. In particular, the book focuses on second order nonlinear differential equations. It analyzes the Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic boundary value problems associated with the equation and provides existence, nonexistence and multiplicity results for positive solutions. The author proposes a new approach based on topological degree theory that allows him to answer some open questions and solve a conjecture about the dependence of the number of positive solutions on the nodal behaviour of the nonlinear term of the equation. The new technique developed in the book gives, as a byproduct, infinitely many subharmonic solutions and globally defined positive solutions with chaotic behaviour. Furthermore, some future directions for research, open questions and interesting, unexplored topics of investigation are proposed.

Book excerpt: The theory of integral and integrodifferential equations has ad vanced rapidly over the last twenty years. Of course the question of existence is an age-old problem of major importance. This mono graph is a collection of some of the most advanced results to date in this field. The book is organized as follows. It is divided into twelve chap ters. Each chapter surveys a major area of research. Specifically, some of the areas considered are Fredholm and Volterra integral and integrodifferential equations, resonant and nonresonant problems, in tegral inclusions, stochastic equations and periodic problems. We note that the selected topics reflect the particular interests of the authors. Donal 0 'Regan Maria Meehan CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION AND PRELIMINARIES 1.1. Introduction The aim of this book is firstly to provide a comprehensive existence the ory for integral and integrodifferential equations, and secondly to present some specialised topics in integral equations which we hope will inspire fur ther research in the area. To this end, the first part of the book deals with existence principles and results for nonlinear, Fredholm and Volterra inte gral and integrodifferential equations on compact and half-open intervals, while selected topics (which reflect the particular interests of the authors) such as nonresonance and resonance problems, equations in Banach spaces, inclusions, and stochastic equations are presented in the latter part.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Nonlinear Integral Equations presents several extremely fruitful methods for the analysis of systems and nonlinear integral equations. They include: fixed point methods (the Schauder and Leray-Schauder principles), variational methods (direct variational methods and mountain pass theorems), and iterative methods (the discrete continuation principle, upper and lower solutions techniques, Newton's method and the generalized quasilinearization method). Many important applications for several classes of integral equations and, in particular, for initial and boundary value problems, are presented to complement the theory. Special attention is paid to the existence and localization of solutions in bounded domains such as balls and order intervals. The presentation is essentially self-contained and leads the reader from classical concepts to current ideas and methods of nonlinear analysis.

Book excerpt: In recent years considerable interest has been focused on nonlinear diffu sion problems, the archetypical equation for these being Ut = D.u + f(u). Here D. denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, the solution u = u(x, t) is defined over some space-time domain of the form n x [O,T], and f(u) is a given real function whose form is determined by various physical and mathematical applications. These applications have become more varied and widespread as problem after problem has been shown to lead to an equation of this type or to its time-independent counterpart, the elliptic equation of equilibrium D.u + f(u) = o. Particular cases arise, for example, in population genetics, the physics of nu clear stability, phase transitions between liquids and gases, flows in porous media, the Lend-Emden equation of astrophysics, various simplified com bustion models, and in determining metrics which realize given scalar or Gaussian curvatures. In the latter direction, for example, the problem of finding conformal metrics with prescribed curvature leads to a ground state problem involving critical exponents. Thus not only analysts, but geome ters as well, can find common ground in the present work. The corresponding mathematical problem is to determine how the struc ture of the nonlinear function f(u) influences the behavior of the solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear exposition of the flourishing field of fixed point theory. Starting from the basics of Banach's contraction theorem, most of the main results and techniques are developed: fixed point results are established for several classes of maps and the three main approaches to establishing continuation principles are presented. The theory is applied to many areas of interest in analysis. Topological considerations play a crucial role, including a final chapter on the relationship with degree theory. Researchers and graduate students in applicable analysis will find this to be a useful survey of the fundamental principles of the subject. The very extensive bibliography and close to 100 exercises mean that it can be used both as a text and as a comprehensive reference work, currently the only one of its type.

They are suggested as mathematical models of physical problems in many fields, such as filtration, phase transition, biochemistry and dynamics of biological groups. In many cases, the equations possess degeneracy or singularity. The appearance of degeneracy or singularity makes the study more involved and challenging. Many new ideas and methods have been developed to overcome the special difficulties caused by the degeneracy and singularity, which enrich the theory of partial differential equations. This book provides a comprehensive presentation of the basic problems, main results and typical methods for nonlinear diffusion equations with degeneracy. Some results for equations with singularity are touched upon. Contents: Newtonian Filtration Equations: Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions: One Dimensional Case; Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions: Higher Dimensional Case; Regularity of Solutions: One Dimensional Case; Regularity of Solutions: Higher Dimensional Case; Properties of the Free Boundary: One Dimensional Case; Properties of the Free Boundary: Higher Dimensional Case; Initial Trace of Solutions; Other Problems; Non-Newtonian Filtration Equations: Existence of Solutions; Harnack Inequality and Initial Trace of Solutions; Regularity of Solutions; Uniqueness of Solutions; Properties of the Free Boundary; Other Problems; General Quasilinear Equations of Second Order: Weakly Degenerate Equations in One Dimension; Weakly Degenerate Equations in Higher Dimension; Strongly Degenerate Equations in One Dimension; Degenerate Equations in Higher Dimension without Terms of Lower Order; General Strongly Degenerate Equations in Higher Dimension; Classes BV and BV x; Nonlinear Diffusion Equations of Higher Order: Similarity Solutions of a Fourth Order Equation; Equations with Double-Degeneracy; CahnOCoHilliard Equation with Constant Mobility; CahnOCoHilliard Equations with Positive Concentration Dependent Mobility; Thin Film Equation; CahnOCoHilliard Equation with Degenerate Mobility. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a self-contained and comprehensive account of the most significant existence results obtained over the past two decades referring to some remarkable classes of ill-posed problems governed by non-accretive operators. All the results are derived from several compactness arguments, due mainly to the author, and are suitably illustrated by examples arising from various concrete problems - for example, nonlinear diffusion, heat conduction in materials with memory, fluid dynamics, and vibrations of a string with memory. Reference is made to optimal control theory in order to emphasize the degree of applicability of abstract compactness methods. Special attention is paid to multivalued perturbations of m-accretive operators; this case is analyzed under appropriate assumptions in order to allow the use of the general results in the study of some specific problems of great practical interest: reaction-diffusion and closed loop systems. Some biographical comments and open problems are also included. This new edition contains a number of improvements, corrections and insertions which both simplify and update the material. The book will be of interest to graduate students and specialists working in abstract evolution equations, partial differential equations, reaction-diffusion systems and ill-posed problems. A knowledge of topology, functional analysis and ordinary differential equations to undergraduate level is assumed.

Book excerpt: Boundary Value Problems for Systems of Differential, Difference and Fractional Equations: Positive Solutions discusses the concept of a differential equation that brings together a set of additional constraints called the boundary conditions. As boundary value problems arise in several branches of math given the fact that any physical differential equation will have them, this book will provide a timely presentation on the topic. Problems involving the wave equation, such as the determination of normal modes, are often stated as boundary value problems. To be useful in applications, a boundary value problem should be well posed. This means that given the input to the problem there exists a unique solution, which depends continuously on the input. Much theoretical work in the field of partial differential equations is devoted to proving that boundary value problems arising from scientific and engineering applications are in fact well-posed. Explains the systems of second order and higher orders differential equations with integral and multi-point boundary conditions Discusses second order difference equations with multi-point boundary conditions Introduces Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations with uncoupled and coupled integral boundary conditions

Book excerpt: This work, consisting of expository articles as well as research papers, highlights recent developments in nonlinear analysis and differential equations. The material is largely an outgrowth of autumn school courses and seminars held at the University of Lisbon and has been thoroughly refereed. Several topics in ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations are the focus of key articles, including: * periodic solutions of systems with p-Laplacian type operators (J. Mawhin) * bifurcation in variational inequalities (K. Schmitt) * a geometric approach to dynamical systems in the plane via twist theorems (R. Ortega) * asymptotic behavior and periodic solutions for Navier--Stokes equations (E. Feireisl) * mechanics on Riemannian manifolds (W. Oliva) * techniques of lower and upper solutions for ODEs (C. De Coster and P. Habets) A number of related subjects dealing with properties of solutions, e.g., bifurcations, symmetries, nonlinear oscillations, are treated in other articles. This volume reflects rich and varied fields of research and will be a useful resource for mathematicians and graduate students in the ODE and PDE community.
