Download or read book Columbia Pictures written by Jim Pauley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbia Pictures reaches a major milestone in 2024 by celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Columbia’s incorporation. In the same vein of recent Hollywood movie studio titles such as Warner Bros.: Hollywood’s Ultimate Backlot, Paramount: City of Dreams, and MGM: Hollywood’s Greatest Backlot, this new book documents the studio history of Columbia Pictures Corporation in Hollywood, as well as Columbia’s back lot in Burbank, California. This book reveals how Columbia came to be founded by Joe Brandt and brothers Harry and Jack Cohn in 1924, and uses the “studio tour” concept to describe Columbia's history of filmmaking, which includes Lost Horizon, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, From Here to Eternity, The Bridge on the River Kwai, as well as many serials and television programs. The book has hundreds of photos, including studio documents, vintage publicity stills, and candids, along with aerial views and maps. The majority of the photos have never been published before.

Book Synopsis Art Markets and Digital Histories by : Claartje Rasterhoff
Download or read book Art Markets and Digital Histories written by Claartje Rasterhoff and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue of Arts investigates the use of digital methods in the study of art markets and their histories. As historical and contemporary data is rapidly becoming more available, and digital technologies are becoming integral to research in the humanities and social sciences, we sought to bring together contributions that reflect on the different strategies that art market scholars employ to navigate and negotiate digital techniques and resources. The essays in this issue cover a wide range of topics and research questions. Taken together, the essays offer a reflection on what takes to research art markets, which includes addressing difficult topics such as the nature of the research questions and the data available to us, and the conceptual aspects of art markets, in order to define and operationalize variables and to interpret visual and statistical patterns for scholarship. In our view, this discussion is enriched when also taking into account how to use shared or interoperable ontologies and vocabularies to define concepts and relationships that facilitate the use and exchange of linked (open) data for cultural heritage and historical research.
Book Synopsis Larry Semon, Daredevil Comedian of the Silent Screen by : Claudia Sassen
Download or read book Larry Semon, Daredevil Comedian of the Silent Screen written by Claudia Sassen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to his premature death from tuberculosis in 1928, Larry Semon was one of the most popular comics on the silent screen. For a time he rivaled comedy legends Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton for fame and fortune. The son of magician Professor Zera the Great, Semon participated in many of his father's early performances. A talented youth, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist before going into motion pictures with the Vitagraph Company. He soon became a Hollywood legend, responsible for his own stories, gags, acting and direction. The result of 30 years of research, this long overdue biography recognizes one of Hollywood's most overlooked auteurs. The author draws on numerous articles and contacts with Semon's family and friends, and screens many films previously believed to be lost.
