But some among the drawings of the Dutch School, though coming late indeed in the procession of the world's best Art, are still the earliest to possess for us that different and self contained interest which belongs to work done for its proper sake, itself realising the intention with which it was begun, and so, in the first form in which it comes down to us, at once final and complete. The School of Holland - that northern School to which at last, in the great Seventeenth Century, supremacy in Art had moved - was perhaps the first to adequately feel the value of those immediate impressions which the Italians and the early Flemish had recognised chiefly to control, to alter, to enlarge. And in the many methods of their Art, the masters of Holland sought to perpetuate for the beholders of their work the impressions which to themselves who recorded them had perhaps been as fleeting as vivid. It comprises important works by Rembrandt and his pupils, as well as drawings by Abraham Bloemart, Jan van Goyen, Herman Saftleven, Willem van de Velde and many other artists. Although trade contacts between the Netherlands and Sweden were lively in the seventeenth century, they account for only a small part of the collection. The bulk of the drawings was acquired by Swedish collectors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Foremost among them was Count Carl Gustaf Tessin, whose acquisitions at the 1741 Paris sale of the financier Pierre Crozat make up the core of the collection.This catalogue, the result of a long-term research project, includes almost 600 drawings, of which approximately 130 are previously unpublished. Besides the Nationalmuseum, it draws on the collections of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, The Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Uppsala University Library and other institutions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of Paintings by Dutch Masters of the Seventeenth Century The golden era of Dutch painting is compressed into the brief period between 162 5 and I 670, although three genera tions of masters lent their lustre to it - Frans Hals, born in I Rembrandt, born in I 606, and Jan Vermeer, born in 1632. If the art of the first generation owered late, and that of the third had an early close, it is due to the fact that a certain period - about two decades - was necessary for the development and establishment of a national art, and that in 1670 the French school made its victorious appearance, completely submerging the native painting. Unusually late was Hals' development, and Jan Vermeer died early in I 677. In this manner Rembrandt's productive era embraces almost completely that of the three generations, whose art but for his in uence could never have attained SO rich a development. Holland's contribution, during this golden age, to the universal progress of painting lay primarily in the fact that she freed it from its dependence upon the Church.
