This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daytime and Evening Exercises in Astronomy, for Schools and Colleges Astronomy is the last of the sciences to use the laboratory method in teaching its elementary classes. The reason of this is not far to seek. Since no instrument has been invented capable of piercing the clouds, observational work has always been dependent on the caprice of the weather. Photography now furnishes perfect representations of sun, moon, planets, and stars, for daytime study; also many forms of illustrative apparatus can be used by the student to awake and cultivate his imagination and furnish, at firsthand, data for scientific reasoning. This oldest of the sciences, which has heretofore been a rigid discipline for the few, should now take its place beside the others as a training in the scientific method for the many who pursue the subject chiefly for information and culture. The management of schools and colleges should make the same allowance of time and money for laboratory instruction in this as in the other sciences; there should be a laboratory, a demonstrator, and fixed hours for students' daytime work. Besides the ordinary instruments of an observatory there should be collections of photographs, charts, and apparatus for the students' own handling. The only astronomical laboratory books known to the writer are those of the South Kensington School of Science in London, and of Miss Byrd and Professor Robert Willson. Book Synopsis Introductory Astronomy Exercises by : Dale C. Ferguson
Download or read book Introductory Astronomy Exercises written by Dale C. Ferguson and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferguson's flexible and useful INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY EXERCISES, Second Edition, provides professors and students with laboratory exercises that are well-tested, current, and flexible to individual course needs. These labs have a variety of origins and authors, and bring a broad range of activity to the introductory astronomy lab. Most require only inexpensive equipment. INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY EXERCISES, Second Edition, gives students practical experience with the things they only read about in their book, such as using a telescope and CCD photography. Ferguson groups the exercises together by whether they deal with the solar system or stars and other objects beyond the solar system. Three introductory exercises on using telescopes, viewing constellations and the Celestial Sphere, and using numbers in science set the stage and help readers overcome anxiety. A combination of indoor and outdoor labs allows for adjustments due to weather conditions. A chart that cross-references exercises in this manual to relevant chapters in Brooks/Cole astronomy books adds to the book's flexibility, and help the instructor reinforce selected topics.
