Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXECUTIVE COACHING WORLD: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Explores the definition of executive coaching and the linguistic behaviours of executive coaches in the English language and answers two important and fundamental questions: What is a definition of executive coaching that can be accepted by most executive coaches? What is the relevance and use of different linguistic behaviours by an Executive Coach? A new profession has emerged over the last 20 years called executive coaching, while massive changes in the way leaders of organisations are expected to lead. Executive coaching has seen rapid growth with an estimated 29,000 executive coaches globally in an industry worth over $2bn. Yet executive coaching does not even have a universally accepted definition of what it is, let alone universally accepted standards and as a result, anyone may claim to be an executive coach and deliver any kind of service. There is almost no empirical research of any quality and academics agree that defining and delineating the field is the most urgent task facing the industry as it moves towards professional status. A definition will answer the fundamental questions "What is it?" and "Who gets it?." However it does not answer "What does an executive coach do?." The coaching conversation is at the heart of good executive coaching and therefore the effective use of linguistic behaviours is the key skill that an executive coach must possess. Utilising the latest thinking in social research methods and a pragmatic approach, a concurrent mixed method strategy was used and an on-line survey instrument selected to collect primary data. A frame of 12,500 coaches was identified that included a random set of the population. This frame was invited to take part and 1,190 qualified English speaking executive coaches were selected as the research sample that equates to a margin of error of less than 3% at 95% level of certainty. Analysis has shown that this is the largest Executive Coaching Survey conducted so far. In total the executive coaches who took part in the survey have been practicing executive coaching for over 8,000 years! Executive Coaching World: A Global Perspective will be a valuable asset to practitioners, academics, teachers and trainers alike.

Book excerpt: We live in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, in which our work and lives are constantly disrupted and changing. But coaches and leaders are still trained to operate within stable models with a uni-focus on performance. Coaches are starting to question the remit of ‘raising performance’ within existing systems, many of which are outdated, dysfunctional and even toxic. The role of the coach today must evolve to become fit for purpose in challenging times and coaching must re-articulate its values, as the essential compass for navigating turbulent waters. In The Future of Coaching, Hetty Einzig examines the role of coaching and leadership in the twenty-first century, and sets out a compelling vision for its future. Drawing on experience gained over twenty-five years of coaching leaders in the corporate and public sectors, in the UK and globally, she challenges the tenet of coaching neutrality. Rather than simply following the client agenda, she encourages coaches to see themselves as partners in courageous leadership and to work towards building an ethical, holistic and networked coaching approach to help create businesses that serve society and our globalised world. The book asks essential questions of coaches working today: how can leaders and coaches become ‘positive deviants’ and transform the rules of the game within cultures where denial and group-think are rife? How can coaches work with the anxious and depressed, embracing the dark as well as the light? Are coaches prepared for the rise of Millennials, women leaders and those over sixty (the Third Acters)? Einzig challenges the model of the Strong Leader in favour of Respons-able leadership based on authentic strength, distributed power and responsive thinking. And she shows how this vision of a transformed workplace is essential for the transformations society must undertake to reclaim a positive future. This thought provoking collection of essays, designed to be read in any order, is enlightening and inspiring reading for coaches in practice and in training, HR and L&D professionals and for leaders everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coaching has become a global business phenomenon, yet the way that coaching has evolved and spread across the globe is not unproblematic. Some of these challenges include: different types/genres of coaching; understanding and relevance of different coaching philosophies and models in different cultural contexts; equivalency of qualifications and coach credentials, as well as questions over standards and governance, as part of a wider debate around professionalization. Coaching then, as with the transfer of knowledge and professionalization in other disciplines, is not immune to ethnocentricity. Through a combination of adopting a meta-analysis of coaching, supported with narratives of coaching practice drawn from different socio-political/cultural contexts, the aim of this book is to challenge current knowledge, understanding and norms of how coaching is, or should, be practised in different cultural contexts. This book will provide a foundation for further research in coaching as an academic field of study and as an emerging profession. It will resonate with critical scholars, coach educators, and coach practitioners who want to develop their praxis and enhance their reflexivity and be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of business and leadership, human resource development, organizational learning and development, mentoring and coaching.

According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching earns over $3 Billion per year with over 100,000 practitioners of coaching. This book is for both practitioners and scholars of executive coaching. Coaching is an exciting and powerful skillset that allows individuals to empower others and helps individuals to generate awareness that opens the door for great levels of success. The approach of this book is to look at the theoretical framework of coaching as it applies to the actual practice of coaching others and groups. It is important to ground practice in theory and research to bring together the researched framework to help to inform the approach. There is an old proverb that states: “Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but no one knows why.” The approach of this book will enable the student with the theory, the processes and the skills to coach in a way that works and to be able to understand the why behind the success as well as make it replicable.

Book excerpt: The unrelenting pace of business in modern organizations places constant pressure on employees, challenging the physical and emotional resources of both staff and supervisors. Consultants have become familiar with the survivalist mentality among workers, each struggling to improve production, solve intractable conflict, and chart realistic growth. This book was written to help organizational consultants understand the chaotic processes and psychodynamic problems that influence executive behavior and performance. In engaging prose highlighted by substantial case illustrations, the author examines organizational conflict and shows how methods and techniques developed in clinical settings can be applied to coach executives and management teams. The book is an important read for consultants who wish to help executives develop human wisdom and to gain insight into the chaotic, "shadow" side of individual and organizational life.
