Book excerpt: The authors perform a QCD analysis of the exclusive production of two mesons in [gamma]*[gamma] collisions in the kinematical domain of large photon virtuality Q and small hadronic invariant mass W. This reaction is dominated by a scale invariant mechanism which factorizes into a perturbative subprocess, [gamma]*[gamma] {r{underscore}arrow} q{anti q} or [gamma]*[gamma] {r{underscore}arrow} gg, and a generalized two-meson distribution amplitude. The authors develop in detail the phenomenology of this process at ee− colliders. Using a simple model for the two-pion distribution amplitude, based on its general properties, the authors estimate the cross section for the kinematics accessible at BABAR, BELLE, CLEO and LEP.

Book excerpt: We present a new measurement of the cross section for the process ee/sup −/ → e+e/sup /minus//?+?/sup /minus// at center-of-mass energy 29 GeV for invariant pion pair masses M/sub /phi//phi// between 350 MeV/c2 and 3.5 GeV/c2. For M/sub /pi//pi// above 2.1 GeV/c2, we find approximate agreement with the hard-scattering prediction of Brodsky and Lepage. In the low mass region, we observe the f2(1270), and measure its radiative width to be 3.15 /plus minus/ .04 /plus minus/ .39 keV. We also observe an enhancement in the /pi//sup +//pi//sup /minus// spectrum near 1 GeV. We hypothesize that it is the f0(975) and determine it's radiative width to be 0.29 /plus minus/ .07 /plus minus/ .12 keV. 48 refs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have measured the multiplicities of pions produced in the collisions of ? mesons with neon nuclei at bombarding momenta of 10.5 and 200 GeV/c. The diffractive production of pions is clearly separable. If one excludes the diffractive part, the pion multiplicity obeys the same Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling as found previously for ?--p collisions. This fact would seem to indicate the validity of an energy-flux or collective-variable description of the production process. A surprisingly large number of energetic protons (> 1 GeV/c lab momentum) are found to be produced in ?-Ne collisions.
