Book excerpt: A long-standing issue in nuclear physics is whether or not multiple excitations of the giant-dipole resonance do exist. Recent studies at LAMPF using pion-induced double-charge exchange reactions show the existence of previously unobserved giant resonances in the continuum at high-excitation energies. Based on their energies, characteristic angular distributions, and the cross sections at which the resonances are observed, they have been identified as two different types of double-collective-excitation modes of the nucleus: (1) The isovector giant-dipole resonance built on the isobaric analog state and (2) the isovector giant-dipole resonance built on the giant dipole. In this report we will discuss the general features of the new resonances as they have emerged from DCX experiments performed recently at LAMPF. 12 refs., 7 figs.

This book gives an up-to-date, comprehensive account of our present knowledge of giant resonances. It presents the experimental facts and the techniques used to obtain that information, describes how these facts fit into theoretical concepts and how this allows to determine various nuclear properties which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Included as an introduction is an overview of the main facts, a short history of how the field has developed in the course of time, and a discussion of future perspectives.

Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of electric giant multipole resonances are discussed. The parameters of the giant quadrupole resonance are now firmly established by an extensive set of measurements. The GQR is providing a significant influence in other areas of nuclear physics. The monopole resonance has now been established and its observation has provided the first direct measure of the nuclear compressibility. A strong case for the existence of a giant octupole resonance is now being made through a variety of hadron reactions. However, the supply of giant multipole resonances has not been exhausted. The newer techniques such as higher energy proton scattering, charge exchange reactions, heavy-ion scattering and pion reactions offer considerable hope for identifying new resonances during the next few years.

Book excerpt: Studies with the pion charge exchange reactions (.pi./sup +-/, .pi.°) at 164 MeV using the LAMPF .pi.° spectrometer are yielding new results on the existence and systematic features of isovector resonances in nuclei. These experiments possess an unusually high signal/background ratio for isovector resonances of low-multipolarity. Results obtained to date are: (1) observation and angular disribution measurement of the giant dipole resonance in nuclei 12C, 4°Ca, 9°Zr, and 12°Sn; and (2) observation and angular distribution measurements in the (.pi.−, .pi.°) reaction on 9°Zr and 12°Sn of large signals possessing the expected angular distribution shapes and magnitudes for the isovector monopole resonance. Excitation energies are near the hydrodynamical model values 170 A−13 MeV. Differential cross sections are approximately 0.7 J12(qR) mb/sr. An overview of this experimental program, with emphasis on new results and how they correlate with existing knowledge on the isovector resonances, is presented.

In these experiments well-understood, spherical, even-even nuclei were studied at 120, 165, and 230 MeV. The emphasis of the 165 MeV study was on L = 0, 1, and 2 isovector resonances as a function of the atomic mass of the target. The targets were Ca-40, Ni-60, Zr-90, Sn-120, Ce-140, and Pb-208. The 120 and 230 MeV studies were aimed at measuring the properties of the isovector resonances as function of bombarding energy for a few targets, Ca-40, Ni-60, and Sn-120. Double differential cross sections up to excitation energies of 60 MeV were measured out to angles extending well past the second maximum of the isovector quadrupole resonance angular distribution. Results of the experiments were found to be in good agreement with RPA-DWIA and other theoretical calculations as regards isovector dipole and monopole energies, widths and cross sections, and strong interaction radii. However, some problem in the distorted wave Born approximation treatment of the reaction mechanism or in the structure of the isobaric-analog state was indicated from measurements of the energy dependence of the maximum cross sections for the dipole and monopole resonances. 12 refs., 10 figs.
