A withdrawal design replicated across two classrooms was used to analyze the influence of a self-monitoring intervention component on the overall effectiveness of a randomized interdependent group contingency on the classroom behavior of students with EBD. Target behaviors included student engagement and disruptive behavior and teacher positive and negative statements. This study was implemented in an alternative school setting and 11 students participated. Visual analysis of data indicated an increase in student engagement and a decrease in disruptive behaviors upon introduction of interdependent group contingency procedures, though there was no observable impact on student behavior following the addition of self-monitoring procedures. No functional relationship was demonstrated between intervention procedures and teacher positive and negative statements. Discussion focuses on the contributions of this study to the current literature, limitations, the implications for school psychology practice, and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: Self-monitoring is an attractive alternative to externally managed behavior support strategies for students with disruptive behaviors in school settings. With the increased emphasis on employing FBA procedures, a significant need exists to effectively link FBA data with self-monitoring interventions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differential effects of self-monitoring functionally equivalent and non-functionally equivalent responses based on FBA data with four students with E/BD in special education classrooms. During the first phase of the study, the function of students' disruptive behaviors was empirically demonstrated. This information was used in the second phase of the study to compare the two conditions. In one condition, students self-monitored a behavior that was functionally equivalent to the student's disruptive behaviors. The effects of this condition were compared to those of self-monitoring a behavior that is not functionally equivalent to their disruptive behavior. An ABCBC reversal design was used to examine the effects of the different self-monitoring conditions. Generalization across settings was examined in general education classrooms. The data for two students suggested that self-monitoring a functionally equivalent behavior was more effective than self-monitoring a non-functionally equivalent behavior. The effects generalized across settings when a modified self-monitoring strategy was implemented. One student demonstrated undifferentiated responding across conditions. Further research is warranted to support the efficacy of linking FBA data with self-monitoring.

Results examine overall effectiveness for each intervention phase. Social validity and future areas of research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Group contingencies are often used in the classroom to decrease disruptive behavior and improve both academic performance and on-task behavior. However, research is mixed regarding the most appropriate target for intervention: academic performance, on-task behavior, or disruptive behavior. The current study was designed to extend research on group contingency target behaviors by evaluating and comparing two interdependent group contingencies: an academic performance contingency and an on-task behavior contingency. Dependent variables included percent correct, percent on-task, and disruptive behavior. The participants were seven, eighth-grade students with Emotional Behavior Disorder. Data were collected in the social studies classroom. An adapted alternating treatments design was used with on-task behavior and academic performance contingencies serving as the treatments. Acceptability data were collected to determine if students and the teacher preferred one contingency over another. Data were collected during independent seatwork, and participants were told whether it was an on-task contingency day or an academic performance contingency day. If the class average percent correct or percent on-task met a randomly selected criterion, all class members earned access to a randomly selected group reward. Visual analysis and effect size data showed that the on-task contingency produced large increases in class average percent correct and percent on-task. The academic performance contingency had small effects on class average percent correct and percent on-task. Neither contingency affected disruptive behavior. Survey and interview data reveal that the classroom teacher and the students found both interventions acceptable. Neither contingency was preferred over the other. Theoretical and applied implications of the findings, study limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Perhaps the first thing that the reader will notice about the second edition is that it is more extensive than the first. The volume currently has 41 chapters, in contrast to the 31 chapters that comprised the earlier version. Chapters 3, 9, 29, and 30 of the first edition either have been dropped or were combined, whereas 14 new chapters have been added. In effect, we are gratified in being able to reflect the continued growth of behavior therapy in the 1980s. Behavior therapists have addressed an ever-increasing number of disorders and behavioral dysfunctions in an increasing range of populations. The most notable advances are taking place in such areas as cognitive approaches, geriatrics, and behavioral medicine, and also in the treatment of childhood disorders.

Appropriate and inappropriate behaviors were measured using frequency. Students used an individualized data sheet to count their appropriate and inappropriate behaviors exhibited during instruction, delivering a reinforcer to themselves if they met pre-determined criteria, and graphing their number of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors daily. Students were between the ages of nine and twelve. All four participants had a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyper Activity (ADHD) and were placed in a Behavior Learning Center within their school district. A multiple-baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Findings indicated that the use of self-monitoring with a MotivAider®, self-graphing, and self-delivered reinforcement increased the number of appropriate behaviors exhibited and decreased the number of inappropriate behaviors exhibited.
