The original experimental research on stimulus overselectivity in ASD was conducted several decades ago; however, interventions for children with ASD now typically include programming to target conditional discriminations in ways that might minimize the prevalence of stimulus overselectivity. The present study assessed 42 children who had been diagnosed or educationally identified with ASD using a discrimination learning assessment. Of these 42 children, 19% displayed overselective responding, which is a lower percentage than that seen in early research. Possible explanations for this decreased percentage, implications for intervention, and future directions for research are discussed. Previous research has demonstrated a link between both chronological and mental age and overselectivity in typical development. However, the age at which children are developmentally ready to respond to discriminations involving simultaneous multiple cues has not been established. Thirty-seven typically developing preschoolers completed a task requiring response to simultaneous cues (color and shape) to establish the age at which typically developing children can successfully respond to multiple cues. Results demonstrate that typically developing children under 36 months of age have difficulty responding to multiple cues. Implications for behavioral treatment for autism are discussed. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by deficits in social communication, and the presence of restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests that are reported before the age of 3 years. The increase in the prevalence of ASD has been documented worldwide. There is no cure for ASD but treatment exists. Studies that used small clinical samples have reported high prevalence of self-injurious behaviors (SIB) in ASD, but data from large, population-based studies are lacking. SIB are highly disruptive and have important consequences to the individual, the family, and the society. The etiology of SIB is not completely understood, and prevention is challenged by lack of valid data on the prevalence, risk factors, and longitudinal changes. This study had three major aims: to provide population estimates of the prevalence of SIB and assess whether there are significant trends over time; to explore associations between SIB and various potential risk factors; to assess longitudinal changes in the presence and severity of SIB, and explore baseline characteristics that may influence these changes. This study used data from two large samples of children with ASD: the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network and the Autism Treatment Network (ATN). In ADDM, more than 25% of children with ASD had the presence of SIB documented in their records, but no significant trends were identified in the prevalence over time. In both datasets, child, household, and community characteristics were associated with SIB, including child's younger age, behavioral and developmental factors, somatic conditions, maternal smoking during pregnancy and low educational attainment at the time of child's birth, and living in a community with limited resources. Though the majority of children did not show major changes in SIB overtime, significant changes were documented in a considerable proportion of them. More parents reported resolution of previous SIB and improvement in the severity than new occurrence or deterioration. Individual characteristics and family factors at baseline predicted these changes. This study has provided information that is useful for future longitudinal studies. These results, if confirmed by others, have the potential to impact clinical practice, research, and policy.

The current exploratory study aims to investigate, under the social motivation and CI-distractor framework, how social attention and verbal exchange change in the presence of objects that are of high interest to children with ASD. Nonparametric analysis revealed that the ASD group spent significantly less time viewing the experimenter's full face than the TD group, and they spent more time speaking than children in the TD group. These provide support for the CI-distractor hypothesis, although future research is needed to confirm the reported pattern of results using an experimental design.

Among children with ASD, 50-80% meet criteria for ADHD (van der Meer, 2014) and about 40-50% experience clinical levels of anxiety (White et al., 2009). This study examined the prevalence of ADHD and anxiety, the ways in which ADHD and anxiety manifest (as reported by parents and teachers), and the special education placement of a sample of young children on the spectrum transition to school. Participants in this study included 180 children with ASD ages 4 to 7 years old and their parents and teachers. Behavior problems were measured using parent and teacher report on the Child Behavior Checklist - Parent Report and the Teacher Report Form (CBCL and C-TRF; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001). Clinically significant symptoms of anxiety were reported by parents for 31% for preschool children (ages 4-5) and 50% for school-aged children (ages 6-7). Clinically significant symptoms of ADHD were reported by parents for 22% for preschool children and 45% for school-aged children. There was a disparity between parent- and teacher-reported anxiety and ADHD problems, with teachers reporting fewer problem behaviors overall. Specific behaviors endorsed more and less frequently by parents and teachers are discussed. Finally, this study found that children whose teachers reported clinically elevated ADHD symptoms were less likely to be placed in general education settings. Implications of these findings in the schools are discussed.

Substantial evidence shows that typically developing (TD) children attend to probabilistic relationships between visual events, and preliminary work has demonstrated that infants prefer attending to intermediately predictable contingencies. However, no studies to date have examined how predictability impacts attention across development. Mapping the developmental trajectory of attentional preferences for predictability in typical development is also essential in informing our understanding of how attentional processes may deviate in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD. An attentional preference for increased predictability could lead children with ASD to select developmentally atypical stimuli for learning. The present study aimed to quantify the developmental trajectory of the impact of stimulus predictability on attentional preferences in TD children across early childhood, and determine the feasibility of study methods for examining attention preferences in children with ASD. Eye tracking and computational modeling were used to examine how stimulus predictability impacts attention in TD children (n=72) ages 3-6 years old (Aim 1). Additionally, we examined the trajectory of the impact of predictability on attention preferences across this developmental period in the same sample of TD children, based on both chronological age and cognitive ability level (Aim 2). Finally, we explored the feasibility of study methods in a small group of childrenwith ASD (n=9) in the same range of chronological and nonverbal mental age as the TD group (Aim 3). Results indicated that young TD children prefer attending to stimuli of intermediate predictability, with no differences in this pattern of attentional preferences based on age or cognitive ability level. These results are consistent with previous findings in infants, suggesting that an attentional preference for intermediate predictability may reflect an underlying general information processing mechanism. Furthermore, results demonstrated feasibility of study methods for examining this phenomenon in young children with ASD. In summary, this study provides a thorough characterization of the impact of predictability on attention preferences in young children and provides a foundation for investigating the impact of predictability on attentional processes in children with ASD"--Pages viii-ix.
