Book Synopsis Normal and Abnormal Development of Brain and Behaviour by : G.B.A. Stoelinga
Download or read book Normal and Abnormal Development of Brain and Behaviour written by G.B.A. Stoelinga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a postgraduate course for medical practitioners of various specialties. One purpose of the course was to provide factual data on developmental aspects of the brain and behaviour, and about the possible impact of several important categories of internal and environ mental factors upon neural development. Another purpose was to indicate the extent and the limitations of the methodology now available for the scientific approach of the study of the development of behaviour. In general the investigator is faced with methodological problems of two types, the proper definition and scoring of behavioural items, and the isolation of the different factors that contribute to a particular behaviour. An example of the latter is given in the very last paper, which is concerned with attempts at unravelling under experimental conditions the contributions made by various influences upon a single sequence of behaviour. The course was held in Leiden in November 1970, and was the third in a series of Boerhaave Courses instigated by the Dutch Growth Foundation. Previous subjects have been 'Somatic growth of the child' (in 1964) and 'Human body composition' (in 1967). The programme was planned in collaboration with Prof. Dr. H. H. van Gelderen, Dr. D. G. Lawrence, Prof. Dr. F. J. Monks, Prof. Dr. H. F. R. Prechtl and Prof. Dr. H. K. A. Visser. Financial support was given by the pharmaceutical firms Philips-Duphar, Sandoz and Specia, and by the Dutch Growth Foundation. Major editorial contributions were made by Anneke Bot.
Book Synopsis A Neurological Study of Newborn Infants by : David J. Beintema
Download or read book A Neurological Study of Newborn Infants written by David J. Beintema and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Neurological Study of Newborn Infants considers the consistencies and inconsistencies of neonatal neurological signs. The possibility of a relationship between pre- and perinatal complications of pregnancy and later cerebral dysfunction has led to an increasing interest in the early detection of these defects in the newborn infant. This book is divided into nine chapters, and begins with a presentation of standardized procedures to obtain reliable information from the neurological examination. The next chapters deal with the developmental course of neurological signs during the first days of life. The final chapters discuss the potential effects of obstetrical and postnatal conditions on the developmental course and the consistency of neurological signs throughout the neonatal period. This book is an invaluable source for developmental biologists, neurologists, pediatricians, and obstetricians.

Download or read book Human Growth written by F. Falkner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1979-04-01 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth, as we conceive it, is the study of change in an organism not yet mature. Differential growth creates form: external form through growth rates which vary from one part of the body to another and one tissue to another; and internal form through the series of time-entrained events which build up in each cell the special ized complexity of its particular function. We make no distinction, then, between growth and development, and if we have not included accounts of differentiation it is simply because we had to draw a quite arbitrary line somewhere. It is only rather recently that those involved in pediatrics and child health have come to realize that growth is the basic science peculiar to their art. It is a science which uses and incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, and biology. It is indeed a part of biology, and the study of human growth is a part of the curriculum of the rejuvenated science of Human Biology. What growth is not is a series of charts of height and weight. Growth standards are useful and necessary, and their construction is by no means void of intellectual challenge. They are a basic instrument in pediatric epidemiology. But they do not appear in this book, any more than clinical accounts of growth disorders. This appears to be the first large handbook-in three volumes-devoted to Human Growth.

This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Pediatric Neuroimaging by : A. James Barkovich
Download or read book Pediatric Neuroimaging written by A. James Barkovich and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 3865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thoroughly updated Fifth Edition of Pediatric Neuroimaging is a highly illustrated text-reference that describes and illustrates the full range of pediatric disorders diagnosable by modern neuroimaging. Covering the diagnosis of brain, spinal, and head and neck disorders in the pediatric patient, the text is rooted in the principle that the proper interpretation of studies requires the acquisition of high-quality images and an understanding of the basic concepts of neuroembryology, normal development, and pathophysiology. Much coverage is given to the disorders seen in everyday practice. The emphasis is on CT and MRI, which are the optimal imaging modalities in children. The first two chapters describe useful imaging techniques in this patient population and the imaging manifestations of normal development, to distinguish that from manifestations of disease. The final ten chapters of the book are divided by groups of diseases, with numerous drawings and images that illuminate the underlying pathologic and embryologic/genetic bases of each disorder. The goal is provide a basic approach to groups of diseases, then offer detailed information about the clinical manifestations, underlying biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and/or pathology of specific disorders. The book incorporates the essential concepts for obtaining good images and understanding normal development, which helps the reader to distinguish normal developmental changes from disease
