Book Synopsis Translation and Identity by : Michael Cronin
Download or read book Translation and Identity written by Michael Cronin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Cronin looks at how translation has played a crucial role in shaping debates about identity, language and cultural survival in the past and in the present. He explores how everything from the impact of migration on the curricula for national literature courses, to the way in which nations wage war in the modern era is bound up with urgent questions of translation and identity. Examining translation practices and experiences across continents to show how translation is an integral part of how cultures are evolving, the volume presents new perspectives on how translation can be a powerful tool in enhancing difference and promoting intercultural dialogue. Drawing on a wide range of materials from official government reports to Shakespearean drama and Hollywood films, Cronin demonstrates how translation is central to any proper understanding of how cultural identity has emerged in human history, and suggests an innovative and positive vision of how translation can be used to deal with one of the most salient issues in an increasingly borderless world.
Book Synopsis Detention in Non-International Armed Conflict by : Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne
Download or read book Detention in Non-International Armed Conflict written by Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law has long differentiated between international and non-international armed conflicts, traditionally regulating the former far more comprehensively than the latter. This is particularly stark in the case of detention, where the law of non-international armed conflict contains no rules on who may be detained, what processes must be provided to review their detention, and when they must be released. Given that non-international armed conflicts are now the most common form of conflict, this is especially worrying, and the consequences of this have been seen in the detention practices of states such as the US and UK in Iraq and Afghanistan. This book provides a comprehensive examination of the procedural rules that apply to detention in non-international armed conflict, with the focus on preventive security detention, or 'internment'. All relevant areas of international law, most notably international humanitarian law and international human rights law, are analysed in detail and the interaction between them explored. The book gives an original account of the relationship between the relevant rules of IHL and IHRL, which is firmly grounded in general international law scholarship, treating the issue as a matter of treaty interpretation. With that in mind, and with reference to State practice in specific non-international armed conflicts - including those in Sri Lanka, Colombia, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Iraq - it is demonstrated that the customary and treaty obligations of States under human rights law continue, absent derogation, to apply to detention in non-international armed conflicts. The practical operation of those rules is then explored in detail. The volume ends with a set of concrete proposals for developing the law in this area, in a manner that builds upon, rather than replaces, the existing obligations of States and non-State armed groups.

Book Synopsis Antonine Literature by : Donald Andrew Russell
Download or read book Antonine Literature written by Donald Andrew Russell and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality as well as the historical view of the flourishing bilingual literature of the second century AD is increasingly recognized, but it has been rarely discussed with both Greek and Latin sides linked. This volume collects together eight papers which together offer a wide view of the intellectual and literary world of the Antonines. There are special studies on Plutarch's Lives (C. B. R. Pelling), Lucian's Prologues (H. G. Nesselrath), Aristides' Hymns (D. A. Russell), and Apuleius' Cupid and Psyche (E. J. Kenney). The relationship between the two literary languages is an important theme of the introductory paper (D. A. Russell) and there are also essays on the neglected topic of Greek poetry of the period (E. L. Bowie), on the definition of the Second Sophistic (G. Anderson), and on the influence of Plato's Phaedrus in this period (M. B. Trapp). There is a full bibliography and a brief table of important dates.

Recent studies have compared their backgrounds and characteristics with that of rapists and/or violent (non-sexual) offenders. This translation of a French original by the renowned Jean Proulx challenges existing knowledge on sexual murders, offers new tools for profiling and interrogation, and helps to establish a new research base. Current theories of sexual murder, its prevalence, reasons including attachment theories, profiling and interrogation techniques are all addressed in Proulx’s distinctive, thought-provoking style.

Book Synopsis Governing with the Charter by : James B. Kelly
Download or read book Governing with the Charter written by James B. Kelly and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Governing with the Charter, James Kelly clearly demonstrates that our current democratic deficit is not the result of the Supreme Court’s judicial activism. On the contrary, an activist framers’ intent surrounds the Charter, and the Supreme Court has simply, and appropriately, responded to this new constitutional environment. While the Supreme Court is admittedly a political actor, it is not the sole interpreter of the Charter, as the court, the cabinet, and bureaucracy all respond to the document, which has ensured the proper functioning of constitutional supremacy in Canada. Kelly analyzes the parliamentary hearings on the Charter and also draws from interviews with public servants, senators, and members of parliament actively involved in appraising legislation to ensure that it is consistent with the Charter. He concludes that the principal institutional outcome of the Charter has been a marginalization of Parliament and that this is due to the Prime Minister’s decision on how to govern with the Charter.
