The criticism concerned both sections Of the work - that dealing with Heterogenesis, as well as the portion in which I endeavoured to establish the reality Of Archebiosis, though there was controversy only in regard to the latter subject. The absence Of controversy about Heterogenesis was due to the fact that I made no reply whatever to any Of the criticisms concerning this section Of my book. It was a kind Of subject which did not seem open to profitable discussion, especially with persons who declined to attempt to repeat the observations in question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life: Its Origin, History and Future The University of Chicago in December, 1955, began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bringing to bear on the subject of evolution current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958 they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions of the issues in evolution; these were held for the public during a five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The discus sions were based on the papers that had been prepared and distributed in advance, but were not delivered at the Celebration. The present volume, The Evolution of Life, and its companion volume, The Evolution of Man, represent most of the collected Uni versity of Chicago Centennial papers. A small group on the relation ship between science and spiritual values appears in a third volume, Issues in Evolution, which also contains the panel discussions and an index to all three volumes. Collectively, this work 15 called Evolution after Darwin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But before experience itself can be used with advantage, there is one preliminary step to make, which depends wholly on ourselves: it is the absolute dismissal and clearing of the mind of all prejudice from whatever source arising, and the determination to stand or fall by the result of a direct appeal to facts in the first instance, and of strict logical deduction from them afterwards." Sir John Herschel: Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy. "The fair question is, Does the newly proposed view remove more difficulties, require fewer assumptions, and present more consistency with observed facts than that which it seeks to supersede? if so the philosopher will adopt it, and the world will follow the philosopher - after many days." Mr. Justice Grove: Inaugural Address as President of the British Association, 1866. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. All of the alleged successful experiments in this direction have been shown to be the result of er rors, and as yet no successful attempts have been made to produce living matter by artificial means. So far as we know at the present time, all living things arise from preexisting ones by some form of reproduction. It is, however, the general belief of biologists, that at some remote period living mat ter arose from inorganic elements. The theory that living germs were brought to the earth from somewhere in space is not generally accepted; and the criticism has been made of this view that, after all, it does not explain the origin of life, but merely the advent of life upon the earth. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. It really does not matter. What matters is the quality of thinking you do to justify your position. We take our beliefs and our labels very seriously; and we should, for after all they are ours, they represent our very selves. And yet, not too seriously; for we may be worrying unnecessarily about beliefs and labels that are not truly our own. We may have picked them up inadvertently. They may have been stuck into our pockets during a fit of abstraction. They may have been sold to us when we were off guard. All sorts of very nice people have this belief, or that one. It's quite all right for you to have your belief, whatever it is. But how did you come by it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I told him God, and he knew enough and was content with his knowledge. After a while he grew older and his inquisitive spirit began to puzzle with the question of how God had made him. When his growing mind was ready for the new knowledge I took him to my side and told him the great mystery of life. I told him how he owed to his father and to his mother the beginnings of his life, how God gave him to us. Now a new era opened in his childish mind. AS he grows on to greater maturity he cannot help wondering how the first man was made, how the trees, and the world came to be. He is no longer satisfied with the simple state ment that God made them. His eager mind wants to know, if may be, how God made them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lamarck, the Founder of Evolution: His Life and Work Although it is now a century since Lamarck published the germs of his theory, it is perhaps only within the past fifty years that the scientific world and the general public have become familiar with the name of Lamarck and of Lamarckism. The rise and rehabilitation of the Lamarckian the ory of organic evolution, so that it has become a rival of Darwinism; the prevalence of these views in the United States, Germany, England, and especially in France, where its author is justly regarded as the real founder of organic evolution, has invested his name with a new interest, and led to a desire to learn some of the details of his life and work, and of his theory as he unfolded it in 1800 and subsequent years, and finally expounded it in 1809. The time seems ripe, therefore, for a more extended sketch of Lamarck and his theory, as well as of his work as a philosophical biologist, than has yet appeared. But the seeker after the details of his life is baffled by the general ignorance about the man - his ante cedents, his parentage, the date of his birth, his early training and education, his work as a professor in the Jardin des Plantes, the house he lived in, the place of his burial, and his relations to his scientific con temporaries.
