Book excerpt: From the ambitious vision of the NEP 1968 that aimed to propel India into the ranks of advanced nations, to the paradigm shift brought about by NEP 1986, emphasizing access, equity, and quality, we delve into the intentions, outcomes, and challenges posed by these policies. The vocational focus of NEP 1992, aligning education with India's emerging economic landscape, and the holistic approach of NEP 2020, envisioning a modern and multidisciplinary education system, are also under our analytical lens. Throughout this book, we not only aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of each policy but also to draw connections between them, uncovering the threads that link the past to the present and beyond. As we analyze the objectives, implementations, and repercussions of these policies, we seek to shed light on the lessons learned, the successes celebrated, and the challenges yet to be overcome.

Book excerpt: This book comprehensively chronicles the history of the education policymaking in India from 1947 to 2016 with a focus on the developments after 1964 when the Kothari Commission was constituted. The book is informed by the rare insights acquired by the author while making policy at the state, national, and international levels of governance. Another distinguishing feature of this book lies in the attention it pays to the process and politics of policymaking and the larger setting—or, to use jargon, the political and policy environment— in which policies were made at different points of time. The author brings out a crucial analysis of the Indian educational system against the backdrop of national and global political, economic, and educational developments. Two other distinguishing features of the book are the systematic treatment of the regulation of education and the role of judiciary in the making and implementation of education policies.

Book excerpt: There was a massive turn of events in education in the late 1990s particularly with the emergence of right wing BJP into power. We decided to take a fresh look at the dynamics of development of Indian education based on our experience in Indian Education: Development since Independence. Several major institutions like CABE ACC etc. were adapted to suit political agenda of cultural nationalism during the NDA regime. There was no qualitative shift during the succeeding UPA regime though it resurrected CABE. Biggest casualties were the national institutions with unmistakable dwarfing of the people in the leadership positions. School curriculum shuttled between the 'left' and 'right' leaving students' interest in the back burner. Students' anti-reservation agitation met with water cannons 'lathis' and gunshots when Delhi traders' agitation met with political sympathy across party lines. Indeed a dangerous trend of politicalization of education was set in motion. This dynamics needs to be captured. This book comprises 15 chapters; a chapter each on to elementary education adult education education of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes secondary education higher education technical education women's education inclusive education educational technology teacher education media in education open and distance education and educational financing. These 13 chapters have been preceded by a chapter each on an overview of development of education since independence and evolution of educational policies in India. Each chapter coming from distinguished specialist in the respective field adds additional value to the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is an important reference work in understanding education systems in the South Asia region, their development trajectory, challenges and potential. The handbook includes the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries for discussion---Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka---while also considering countries such as Myanmar and the Maldives that have considerable shared history in the region. Such a comparative perspective is largely absent within the literature given the present paucity of intra-regional interaction. South Asian education systems are viewed primarily through a development lens in terms of inequalities, challenges and responses. However, the development of modern institutions of education and the challenges that it faces requires cultural and historical understanding of indigenous traditions as well as indigenous modern thinkers and education movements. Therefore, this encompassing referenc e work covers indigenous education traditions, formal education systems, including school and preschool education, higher and professional education, education financing systems and structures, teacher education systems, addressing huge linguistic and other diversities, and marginalization within the formal education system, and pedagogy and curricula. All the countries in this region have their own unique geographical, cultural, economic and political character and histories of interest and significance, and have responded to common issues such as overcoming the colonial legacy, language diversity, or girls’ education, or minority rights in education, in uniquely different ways. The sections therefore include country-specific perspectives as far as possible to highlight these issues. Internationally renowned specialists of South Asian education systems have contributed to this important reference work, making it an invaluable resource for researchers and students of education interested in South Asia.

Book excerpt: The history of education in India under British rule is a subject of profound significance, reflecting the complex interplay between colonial imperatives and indigenous aspirations. This book aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the major educational reforms introduced by the British and their lasting impacts on Indian society. The journey of exploring this topic has been both challenging and enlightening. It began with a deep curiosity about how colonial powers shaped the educational landscape of their colonies and evolved into a systematic analysis of the policies, their implementations, and their far-reaching consequences.

Book excerpt: "Evolution of Education in India: a historical perspective" takes a look at the status of education in India during the ancient times, investigates its evolution over the millennia and proposes its future course. The first chapter takes a brief look at the effects of foreign domination on India's educational scene. The second chapter provides variegated education related perspectives of different thinkers as well as practices in different countries. The third chapter places the current Indian education scene in perspective and makes well thought out “non-glamorous” suggestions to improve the entire system. It harks back to India's civilizational glory in the field of education in an attempt to revive the people's traditional attitude towards education even as they assimilate the latest and the best in this field in order to resume their traditional leadership in the field of pedagogy. There was a time when students from as far as Greece and China – as well as other parts of the world – used to take pride in studying in India's educational institutions. India needs to resurrect that glory. This volume emphatically advocates that this can be achieved if the country's policy makers marry India's traditional systems with the avant-garde.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By drawing on quantitative data and qualitative analyses of five major national education policies implemented in India over the last 15 years, this comprehensive volume explores their impact on teacher quality and perceived effectiveness, explaining how this relates to variations in student performance. Responding to a national agenda to increase the quality of the Indian teacher workforce, Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India critically questions the application of human capital theory to Indian education policy. Chapters provide in-depth and strategically structured analyses of five national policies – including the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 – to see how Indian policymakers use teacher quality as a driver and measurement of education and national economic development. Ultimately, the text offers evidence-based policy recommendations to improve teacher quality in India, suggesting that while all five policies have contributed significant frameworks and recommendations for teacher quality reform, they have failed to move beyond a symbolic function. Given its rigorous methodological approach, this book will be a valuable addition to the under-researched question of education policymaking in postcolonial contexts. It will be an indispensable resource not only for scholars working on policymaking in the Indian context, but also for those working at the intersection of education, teacher development, and policymaking in developing countries.
