Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the value of a Darwinian social evolutionary approach to understanding social change. The chapters discuss several different perspectives on social evolutionary theory, and go on to link these with comparative and historical sociological theory, and two case-studies. Kerr brings together social change theory and theories on nationalism, whilst also providing concrete examples of the theories at work. The book offers a vision of rapprochement between these different areas of theory and study, and to where this could lead future studies of comparative history and sociology. As such, it should be useful to scholars and students of nationalism and social change, sociologists, political scientist and historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Social Progress The subject treated here calls for no introduction. Its significance for the man in the street is no less than for the scientist and philosopher, the clergyman and student, the sociologist and journalist. It is of all questions the most fundamental as it is the most far-reaching in its consequences. It is at the basis not merely of our science and our popular literature, but also of our commercial transactions and our labor troubles, of our public morality and the welfare or ruin of nations. All this is made abundantly clear to the reader in the present volume. Men believe in God or in materialistic evolution. There is no other alternative. Scientists plainly state this fact, and the masses have not failed to grasp it. Worker and capitalist, professional man and university professor, the great public and the social elite equally absorbed the evolutionary ideas of the nineteenth century. The technicalities of science did not frighten them away. What then they studied is now taken for granted. To-day they are drawing their logical conclusions. Book excerpt: Evolution is among the most central and most contested of ideas in the history of anthropology. This book charts the fortunes of the idea from the mid-nineteenth century to recent times. By comparing biological, historical, and anthropological approaches to the study of human culture and social life, it lays the foundation for their effective synthesis. Far ahead of its time when first published, the book anticipates debates at the forefront of contemporary thinking. Revisiting the work after almost thirty years, Tim Ingold offers a substantial new preface that describes how the book came to be written, how it was received and its bearing on later developments. Unique in scope and breadth of theoretical vision, Evolution and Social Life cuts across the boundaries of natural science and the humanities to provide a major contribution both to the history of anthropological and social thought, and to contemporary debate on the relationship between human nature, culture, and social life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Social Progress The first logical consequence of the acceptance of the dogma of materialistic evolution is the denial of the free will. If nothing exists except matter and force, there can obviously be no moral liberty. Physical laws or chemical actions and reactions can clearly possess no freedom. 50 human agents could be no more virtuous or crimi nal than the wind and the waste sea when they drown the wrecked sailor or toss him about on the floating log and wash him to the shore. We should then heartily agree with Enrico Ferri, when he proclaims the palpable refutations by physio-psychology of the presupposition of free choice or moral liberty, ' and declares the theoretical and practical impossibility of resting man's responsibility for his crimes upon free choice, either absolute or relative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Evolution of Moral Progress, Allen Buchanan and Russell Powell resurrect the project of explaining moral progress. They avoid the errors of earlier attempts by drawing on a wide range of disciplines including moral and political philosophy, evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology, anthropology, history, and sociology. Their focus is on one especially important type of moral progress: gains in inclusivity. They develop a framework to explain progress in inclusivity to also illuminate moral regression--the return to exclusivist and "tribalistic" moral beliefs and attitudes. Buchanan and Powell argue those tribalistic moral responses are not hard-wired by evolution in human nature. Rather, human beings have an evolved "adaptively plastic" capacity for both inclusion and exclusion, depending on environmental conditions. Moral progress in the dimension of inclusivity is possible, but only to the extent that human beings can create environments conducive to extending moral standing to all human beings and even to some animals. Buchanan and Powell take biological evolution seriously, but with a critical eye, while simultaneously recognizing the crucial role of culture in creating environments in which moral progress can occur. The book avoids both biological and cultural determinism. Unlike earlier theories of moral progress, their theory provides a naturalistic account that is grounded in the best empirical work, and unlike earlier theories it does not present moral progress as inevitable or as occurring in definite stages; but rather it recognizes the highly contingent and fragile character of moral improvement.

Book excerpt: Social behavior has long puzzled evolutionary biologists, since the classical theory of natural selection maintains that individuals should not sacrifice their own fitness to affect that of others. Social Evolution and Inclusive Fitness Theory argues that a theory first presented in 1963 by William D. Hamilton—inclusive fitness theory—provides the most fundamental and general explanation for the evolution and maintenance of social behavior in the natural world. James Marshall guides readers through the vast and confusing literature on the evolution of social behavior, introducing and explaining the competing theories that claim to provide answers to questions such as why animals evolve to behave altruistically. Using simple statistical language and techniques that practicing biologists will be familiar with, he provides a comprehensive yet easily understandable treatment of key concepts and their repeated misinterpretations. Particular attention is paid to how more realistic features of behavior, such as nonadditivity and conditionality, can complicate analysis. Marshall highlights the general problem of identifying the underlying causes of evolutionary change, and proposes fruitful approaches to doing so in the study of social evolution. Social Evolution and Inclusive Fitness Theory describes how inclusive fitness theory addresses both simple and complex social scenarios, the controversies surrounding the theory, and how experimental work supports the theory as the most powerful explanation for social behavior and its evolution.
