A mesmerizing emerald-eyed beauty, who attracts trouble from everywhere with her charismatic and alluring nature. Tish could hold the very secrets of life within her enigmatic body- and that's why she's a target. Only Sheena knows Tish's secret....for now. Their only hope seems to be finding refuge with Vigdor Beckenstein, a brilliant but obscure physicist that is intrigued by the extreme behavior of a frightened woman in love, and upon closer examination finds unusual, but attractive character traits. After disguising the fugitives and introducing them to society he rocks their world with a plan that only destiny could have designed, while well hidden secrets are unexpectedly revealed. Explosive unpredictability only surpassed by originality. Download or read book Eve Was Framed written by Helena Kennedy and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eve Was Framed offers an impassioned, personal critique of the British legal system. Helena Kennedy focuses on the treatment of women in our courts - at the prejudices of judges, the misconceptions of jurors, the labyrinths of court procedures and the influence of the media. But the inequities she uncovers could apply equally to any disadvantaged group - to those whose cases are subtly affected by race, class poverty or politics, or who are burdened, even before they appear in court, by misleading stereotypes.
Download or read book States of Trial written by Ann Basu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of five towering Philip Roth novels - Operation Shylock, the American Pastoral trilogy, and The Plot Against America - explores his vision of a turbulent post-war America personified in trial-racked Jewish American men. These works collectively register the impact of post-1945 upheavals upon the nation and American trial-based myths about wholesomeness and regeneration. Roth shows how the "stories of old" which moulded American self-making have produced disorderly and disruptive counter-stories, playing themselves out in Jewish men marked by spots and stains where their constitutional integrity has been infringed. Roth probes the nation's own constitutional testing points as he shatters the identities of characters such as fallen ace athlete Swede Levov and disgraced academic Coleman Silk. His books seek to strip away America's false innocence, demanding that historical accountability should replace myths of new beginnings. Creating arenas of trial for his American men where national discourses and narratives cross and clash, Roth's novels reveal that a culture equals its debates and allow us to see Americans and America as ongoing experiments, always being tested.

Book excerpt: "On these pages, Eve Adams rises up, loves, rebels—her times, eerily resembling our own." —Joan Nestle, cofounder of the Lesbian Herstory Archives and author of A Restricted Country • 2022 Lambda Literary Awards Finalist Historian Jonathan Ned Katz uncovers the forgotten story of radical lesbian Eve Adams and her long-lost book Lesbian Love Born Chawa Zloczewer into a Jewish family in Poland, Eve Adams emigrated to the United States in 1912,took a new name, befriended anarchists, sold radical publications, and ran lesbian-and-gay-friendly speakeasies in Chicago and New York. Then, in 1925, Adams risked all to write and publish a book titled Lesbian Love. Adams's bold activism caught the attention of the young J. Edgar Hoover and the US Bureau of Investigation, leading to her surveillance and arrest. Adams was convicted of publishing an obscene book and of attempted sex with a policewoman sent to entrap her. Adams was jailed and then deported back to Europe, and ultimately murdered by Nazis in Auschwitz. In The Daring Life and Dangerous Times of Eve Adams, acclaimed historian Jonathan Ned Katz has recovered the extraordinary story of an early, daring activist. Carefully distinguishing fact from fiction, Katz presents the first biography of Adams, and the publisher reprints the long-lost text of Adams's rare, unique book Lesbian Love

Download or read book The Case for Lilith written by Mark Biggs and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend of Lilith is undoubtedly the most fantastic of all ancient rabbinic myths. According to lore, God created her from dust alongside Adam. However, Lilith was a failed mate. She was not animated by the breath of God like Adam. Rather she was preemptively animated by a Satanic mist which erupted from the ground. Lilith rebelled against Adam and became the infamous Serpent who deceived Eve and caused Adam to fall. Therefore, God established eternal enmity between the Serpent Lilith and Eve and between their seed. Lilith's seed would bruise the heel of Eve's promised seed, Messiah, but Eve's seed would revive to crush Lilith’s head. This book reveals 23 Biblical evidences that prompted ancient rabbis to conclude the various elements of Lilith's legend. It also explains how her legend is completely consistent with traditional Judaic / Christian teachings on the Bible's redemptive message. Her legend solves many ancient Biblical mysteries, such as why the Serpent bears seed like Eve.

Book Synopsis The History of Courts and Procedure in Medieval Canon Law by : Wilfried Hartmann
Download or read book The History of Courts and Procedure in Medieval Canon Law written by Wilfried Hartmann and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the thirteenth century, court procedure in continental Europe in secular and ecclesiastical courts shared many characteristics. As the academic jurists of the Ius commune began to excavate the norms of procedure from Justinian's great codification of law and then to expound them in the classroom and in their writings, they shaped the structure of ecclesiastical courts and secular courts as well. These essays also illuminate striking differences in the sources that we find in different parts of Europe. In northern Europe the archives are rich but do not always provide the details we need to understand a particular case. In Italy and Southern France the documentation is more detailed than in other parts of Europe but here too the historical records do not answer every question we might pose to them. In Spain, detailed documentation is strangely lacking, if not altogether absent. Iberian conciliar canons and tracts on procedure tell us much about practice in Spanish courts. As these essays demonstrate, scholars who want to peer into the medieval courtroom, must also read letters, papal decretals, chronicles, conciliar canons, and consilia to provide a nuanced and complete picture of what happened in medieval trials. This volume will give sophisticated guidance to all readers with an interest in European law and courts.
Download or read book Adam as Israel written by Seth D. Postell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Adam is the story of Israel writ small In this text-centered interpretation of Genesis 1-3, Seth Postell contends that the opening chapters of the Bible, when interpreted as a strategic literary introduction to the Torah and to the Tanakh, intentionally foreshadows Israel's failure to keep the Sinai Covenant and their exile from the Promised Land, in order to point the reader to a future work of God, whereby a king will come in "the last days" to fulfill Adam's original mandate to conquer the land (Gen 1:28). Thus Genesis 1-3, the Torah, and the Hebrew Bible as a whole have an eschatological trajectory. Postell highlights numerous intentional links between the story of Adam and the story of Israel and, in the process, explains numerous otherwise perplexing features of the Eden story.

Book excerpt: The Serpent's Garden is a crime/thriller about the macabre and mysterious murders of five female graduate students at UCLA. Professor Chance Carpenter ends up on death row because of a rush to judgment orchestrated by the diminutive FBI agent Laura Lamb. Her ambitions and nefarious secrets cause her to cross the thin blue line and also become a serial killer. She is captured but manages a miraculous escape from the confines of Quantico's FBI headquarters and heads west on a revenge crime spree of her own. She is now on the lam; her crimes are featured in the tabloids and a new dance craze is named after her. College kids are doing the "Laura Lamb". The true killer of the UCLA coeds, however, has blended in with average "Joe College". The thriller follows a trail of evil, surprise, and suspense.
