Book Synopsis Open-Ended Problems by : James Patrick Abulencia
Download or read book Open-Ended Problems written by James Patrick Abulencia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique book with nearly 1000 problems and 50 case studies on open-ended problems in every key topic in chemical engineering that helps to better prepare chemical engineers for the future. The term "open-ended problem" basically describes an approach to the solution of a problem and/or situation for which there is not a unique solution. The Introduction to the general subject of open-ended problems is followed by 22 chapters, each of which addresses a traditional chemical engineering or chemical engineering-related topic. Each of these chapters contain a brief overview of the subject matter of concern, e.g., thermodynamics, which is followed by sample open-ended problems that have been solved (by the authors) employing one of the many possible approaches to the solutions. This is then followed by approximately 40-45 open-ended problems with no solutions (although many of the authors' solutions are available for those who adopt the book for classroom or training purposes). A reference section is included with the chapter's contents. Term projects, comprised of 12 additional chapter topics, complement the presentation. This book provides academic, industrial, and research personnel with the material that covers the principles and applications of open-ended chemical engineering problems in a thorough and clear manner. Upon completion of the text, the reader should have acquired not only a working knowledge of the principles of chemical engineering, but also (and more importantly) experience in solving open-ended problems. What many educators have learned is that the applications and implications of open-ended problems are not only changing professions, but also are moving so fast that many have not yet grasped their tremendous impact. The book drives home that the open-ended approach will revolutionize the way chemical engineers will need to operate in the future.

Book excerpt: University Physics is designed for the two- or three-semester calculus-based physics course. The text has been developed to meet the scope and sequence of most university physics courses and provides a foundation for a career in mathematics, science, or engineering. The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project. Book Synopsis Characterizing Expert and Novice Differences in Problem Solving in Heat Transfer by : Sarah Elizabeth Parikh
Download or read book Characterizing Expert and Novice Differences in Problem Solving in Heat Transfer written by Sarah Elizabeth Parikh and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigates adaptive expertise through the analysis of written open-ended questions. The open-ended questions were given to experts (advanced graduate students) and to novices (undergraduates taking an introductory heat transfer course). Analysis of the experts' responses to these questions indicated that experts make qualifying statements in their responses, a newly identified characteristic of expertise. Analysis of the novices' responses indicates areas for future work in research and teaching. Additionally, the wording of the open-ended questions appears to be important: the responses to questions that asked participants to choose an outcome showed greater differences between the expert and novice participants than questions that asked participants to explain how or why something happens.

Download or read book Case Studies in Fluid Mechanics with Sensitivities to Governing Variables written by M. Kemal Atesmen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers a wide range of practical fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer problems This book covers the many issues that occur in practical fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer, and examines the basic laws (the conservation of matter, conservation of momentum, conservation of energy, and the second law of thermodynamics) of these areas. Polyolefins constitute today arguably the most important class of polymers and polymeric materials for widespread industrial applications. This book summarizes the present state of the art. Starting from fundamental aspects, such as the polymerization techniques to synthesize polyolefins, the book introduces the topic. Basic knowledge about polyolefin composites and blends is explained, before applications aspects in different industry sectors are discussed. The spectrum comprises a wide range of applications and industry sectors, such as the packaging and food industry, the textile industry, automotive and buildings, and even biomedical applications. Topics, which are addressed in the various chapters, comprise synthesis and processing of the materials; their classification; mechanical, physical and technical requirements and properties; their characterization; and many more. In the end of the book, even the disposal, degradation and recycling of polyolefins are addressed, and light is shed on their commercial significance and economic value. In this way, the book follows the entire 'lifetime' of polyolefin compounds and materials: from their synthesis and processing, over applications, to the recycling and reuse of disposed or degraded polyolefin substrates.

Book excerpt: This is the ninth time we are hosting this seminar and we are proud to inform you that this seminar is an annual event in our calendar and has been held every year since 2014. This year, for the third year, we are holding it via Zoom meeting (online meeting) due to Covid-19 pandemic. We are inviting internationally recognized speakers from several countries to share their latest discoveries in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Science Education. Well-known researchers in science and science education will share their experiences and knowledge so that we can stay up-to-date with the latest information. This is one of the goals of this seminar. As science researchers, we realize the importance of information exchange among us. The new information enlightens our minds and gives us ideas on what to do next in our research and how to do it. This new information often becomes the foundation for our next project in particular and sets the research trends for the upcoming year in general. Information exchange also keeps us updated, allowing us to give and receive suggestions and critiques that will lead to better results. Therefore, we need a forum where we can share and exchange information. Seminars, conferences, and other scientific gatherings are the media through which we can do this.
