Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers will enjoy these stories, because Ms. La Forgia has captured the day-to-day sense of what goes on with 8 to 11 year old children in every teacher‛s classroom. Parents will enjoy reading these stories with their children, because they will provide an opportunity to talk about the kinds of things children confront in their world every day. Some parents may even have an “Ah ha” moment as they gain new perspective about how to support their children as they work through life‛s challenges. Children will enjoy reading these stories, because they provide an understanding of the work of childhood, and offer new ways to handle the riddles of friendship. As importantly, all readers and listeners will have a chance to laugh, chuckle, gulp, and perhaps even shed a tear, because these stories are ones that connect to each of us in some way or another. And from that connection, we all learn something new. Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D. Director, Mailman Center for Child Development University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Lori La Forgia brings to life through her distinctive writing this current story that touches your heart as it broadens your understanding and acceptance of the difficulties children encounter. This is a must read for school age children, their parents and educators. Lori A. Grabois, M.D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitch Finley's warmhearted recollection of growing up Catholic is more than nostalgia. It's a mixture of fond memories, gentle humor, and lasting gratitude for what he learned in Catholic schools--simple and profound lessons that gave him a solid foundation for living in times marked by turmoil and change. The lessons he writes about include: Life Is Worth Living; The World Deserves Our Attention; Life Needs Prayer Like a Tree Needs Water; Everybody Has a Vocation; The Universe Is Sacramental; God Loves Everybody the Same; Nobody's Perfect; Jesus Is with Us; And Everybody Has a Guardian Angel. One need not be Catholic to enjoy this gentle celebration of truths that last. Mitch Finley's journey is one that each of us has taken--and continues to take--in our own way. His joyful reminder is simply cause for more gratitude and plenty of delight.

This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a new neural network model called CALM, for categorization and learning in neural networks. The author demonstrates how this model can learn the word superiority effect for letter recognition, and discusses a series of studies that simulate experiments in implicit and explicit memory, involving normal and amnesic patients. Pathological, but psychologically accurate, behavior is produced by "lesioning" the arousal system of these models. A concise introduction to genetic algorithms, a new computing method based on the biological metaphor of evolution, and a demonstration on how these algorithms can design network architectures with superior performance are included in this volume. The role of modularity in parallel hardware and software implementations is considered, including transputer networks and a dedicated 400-processor neurocomputer built by the developers of CALM in cooperation with Delft Technical University. Concluding with an evaluation of the psychological and biological plausibility of CALM models, the book offers a general discussion of catastrophic interference, generalization, and representational capacity of modular neural networks. Researchers in cognitive science, neuroscience, computer simulation sciences, parallel computer architectures, and pattern recognition will be interested in this volume, as well as anyone engaged in the study of neural networks, neurocomputers, and neurosimulators.
