Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everlasting Punishment and Modern Speculation Address at Dundee, 2d October 1873.reflection, for we cannot ponder Scripture, or attempt to gather up its scattered disclosures on any subject, without a systematic arrangement of those separate announce ments. Compliance, therefore, with the counsels of news paper writers, literary essayists, and public lecturers, would be to exchange systematic views of divine truth for undi gested crudities, and to deny to theology what is essential to advancement in every other science. Worse than that, it would be to abandon the experience of religion and all progress in the Christian course; for there is not an aflec tion which enters into Christian experience, or a duty which enters into Christian practice, or an advance made in Chris tian holiness, but has its source and impulse in Bible truth and it is the deep conviction that the doctrine, to which the following pages are devoted, is among the stern realities dis closed in Scripture, and that it is fraught with a great prae tical design proportionate to its awfulness, which has induced me to ponder so long, and introduce so fully to the notice of others, a subject so appalling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Endless Punishment AT the request of the editor of the North American Review, the author of this book prepared an argument in defence of the doctrine of Endless Punishment, which was published in the number of that periodical for February, 1885. It was agreed that the writer should have the right to republish it at a future time. Only the rational argument was presented in the article. The author now reproduces it, adding the Biblical argument, and a brief historical sketch. Every doctrine has its day to be attacked, and defended. Just now, that of Eternal Retribution is strenuously com bated, not only outside of the church, but to some extent within it. Whoever preaches it is said, by some, not to preach to the times - as if the sin of this time were privileged, and stood in a different relation to the law and judgment of God, from that of other times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Ever: An Essay on Eternal Punishment Without tracing all the theories and arguments dealt with to their various origins, which is often more tedious than profitable to the reader, the endeavour has been to sketch a general plan of treatment, and incorporate the arguments on both sides, in the respective places to which they natu rally belonged. In dealing with objections from any quarter, the author has first tried to feel their full force upon his own mind. This, he conceived, was a matter of fairness to the cause for which they were urged, and an advantage to himself in testing their value. The age of an argument has had little Or nothing to do with its admission into the body of this essay. Nor was it much regarded whether it was original or borrowed, if it had point and power. Whether new or old, patristic, mediaeval, or modern, descended from antiquity through the crucible of successive controversies, or the product Of contemporary thought, or newly born of the author's cogitations, it was accepted accordingpumas. To the measure in which it seemed to possess intrinsic worth. The author is very conscious that he is sending forth a work in which many defects will appear, which might have been fewer if he could have devoted uninterrupted attention to its preparation. Nevertheless, he cherishes the hope, that, under the blessing of the Father of lights, whose glory is its highest aim, his labour may, at least in some degree, attain its principal object. Two chapters and two sections entire have been ad ded, and chapters three, four and six, have been greatly enlarged, and the argument illus trated and fortified by new facts and authorities. It is remarkable how steadily God's assur auces of love and blessing for the good, and of Oppo sitiou and ruin to the wicked, accompany and balance each other and the latter is even made the guaranty of the former. Except by some radical change, it would seem clear that God and the sinner can never dwell together in peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "ULYSSES (Modern Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It is considered to be one of the most important works of modernist literature, and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement". Ulysses chronicles the peripatetic appointments and encounters of Leopold Bloom in Dublin in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Ulysses is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels between its characters and events and those of the poem (the correspondence of Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, Molly Bloom to Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus). Joyce divided Ulysses into 18 chapters or "episodes". At first glance much of the book may appear unstructured and chaotic; Joyce once said that he had "put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant", which would earn the novel "immortality". James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses, the short-story collection Dubliners, and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake.

Book excerpt: When the Holy See gave general permission for Catholics to study again at Oxford and Cambridge, the stipulation was made that lectures be offered to provide support for their faith, as Catholics would be a minority in a rather hostile atmosphere. In the days when C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien trod the greens of Oxford, those lectures were provided by the wise and witty Msgr. Ronald Knox, himself a convert to the Catholic Church. Erudite and profound, Monsignor Knox not only helped keep the Catholic students aflame with faith, but also led many lapsed Catholics and non-Catholics into the Church. His writings continue to provide inspiration and instruction to all those confronting questions of life and faith. Some of the best talks by Knox are gathered in this volume. "If God Exists," "The Unholiness of the Church" and "Unselfishness in Marriage" are but a few of the topics he deftly discussed in a manner as entertaining and pertinent now as when they were first given at Oxford in the 1920s and 30s.
