Book Synopsis Creation and Judgement by : Stefan Paas
Download or read book Creation and Judgement written by Stefan Paas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the books of Amos, Hosea and Isaiah use language of creation. This is done by a religion of history approach of ancient Israel with respect to its belief in YHWH as a Creator, and by an exegetical survey of the relevant texts in the prophets mentioned. It is established that creation language was introduced in Israel long before the Exile and is used in a flexible manner, depending on context and situation. Elaborate attention is given to its use in contexts of judgement. This study is relevant for students of the prophets who are looking for a thorough discussion of many texts and a critical examination of some popular views on creation in the Bible.

Download or read book The Creation written by Everett Jenkins and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major monotheistic religions of the world--Judaism, Christianity and Islam--have certain elements in common, particularly in their scriptures concerning the beginnings of life and the early history of human beings. This shared beginning is compellingly worth further study. Common ground and common threads can only help a dialogue between people of different faiths. This reference work could be a tool toward greater understanding of other faiths and focuses on the story of the creation of the universe and of humans. Part One traces the development of the earth and its inhabitants from a scientific viewpoint so that the humanistic perspective may be contrasted with the scriptural accounts to follow. Part Two features an introduction to the Tanakh, information on the Torah, and what is known about its authors, and other influences on the Jewish religion, followed by actual scriptures from the Torah from the creation through the destruction of the Tower of Babel. Then a section each is devoted to an explanation of the Catholic, Protestant and Fundamentalist Christian interpretations of these stories, citing scripture as appropriate. Part Three affords a Muslim perspective with excerpts from the Sirah that refer to events and characters from the early chapters of Genesis. The appendices are rich--various chronologies of similar events based on the different scriptures, tables of contents for the various holy books, tables presenting summaries of a particular perspective on a subject or comparisons between two perspectives and much more.
Book Synopsis The Colossian Hymn in Context by : Matthew E. Gordley
Download or read book The Colossian Hymn in Context written by Matthew E. Gordley and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2007 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suggestion that the New Testament contains citations of early Christological hymns has long been a controversial issue in New Testament scholarship. As a way of advancing this facet of New Testament research, Matthew E. Gordley examines the Colossian hymn (Col 1:15-20) in light of its cultural and epistolary contexts. As a result of a broad comparative analysis, he claims that Col 1:15-20 is a citation of a prose-hymn which represents a fusion of Jewish and Greco-Roman conventions for praising an exalted figure. A review of hymns in the literature of Second Temple Judaism demonstrates that the Colossian hymn owes a number of features to Jewish modes of praise. Likewise, a review of hymns in the broader Greco-Roman world demonstrates that the Colossian hymn is equally indebted to conventions used for praising the divine in the Greco-Roman tradition. In light of these hymnic traditions of antiquity, the analysis of the form and content of the Colossian hymn shows how the passage fits well into a Greco-Roman context, and indicates that it is best understood as a quasi-philosophical prose-hymn cited in the context of a paraenetic letter. Finally, in view of ancient epistolary and rhetorical theory and practice, an analysis of the role of the hymn in Colossians suggests that the hymn serves a number of significant rhetorical functions throughout the remainder of the letter.
Book Synopsis Colossians & Philemon Verse by Verse by : Grant R. Osborne
Download or read book Colossians & Philemon Verse by Verse written by Grant R. Osborne and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary theme of Paul's letter to the Colossians is the lordship of Christ. Writing from prison, Paul urges the Colossian believers to remain focused on Jesus even as false teachers have infiltrated the church. In his letter to Philemon, a prominent co-worker in the Colossian church, Paul spells out some of the practical implications of Christ's lordship when it comes to relationships with others. In Colossians & Philemon Verse by Verse, Grant R. Osborne offers a clear exposition of these letters that takes seriously both their first-century context and what they mean today. Pastors, Bible study leaders, and invested laypeople will all benefit from Osborne's careful reading of the text and commitment to making sense of God's Word without scholarly jargon. The Osborne New Testament Commentary Series is a set of commentaries on every New Testament book. In each volume, Grant R. Osborne seeks to carefully exposit the text in plain language, bringing out the treasures in each book and making them accessible for today's readers.
