Book excerpt: We derive mass formulae for the ground state, J{sup P} = 0− and 1−, and first excited even-parity, J{sup P} = 0 and 1, charmed mesons including one loop chiral corrections and [Omicron](1/m{sub c}) counterterms in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. We show a variety of fits to the current data. We find that certain parameter relations in the parity doubling model are not renormalized at one loop, providing a natural explanation for the equality of the hyperfine splittings of ground state and excited doublets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy-hadron chiral perturbation theory (HH[chi]PT) is applied to the decays of the even-parity charmed strange mesons, D{sub s0}(2317) and D{sub s1}(2460). Heavy-quark spin symmetry predicts the branching fractions for the three electromagnetic decays of these states to the ground states D{sub s} and D{sub s}* in terms of a single parameter. The resulting predictions for two of the branching fractions are significantly higher than current upper limits from the CLEO experiment. Leading corrections to the branching ratios from chiral loop diagrams and spin-symmetry violating operators in the HH[chi]PT Lagrangian can naturally account for this discrepancy. Finally the proposal that the D{sub s0}(2317) (D{sub s1}(2460)) is a hadronic bound state of a D (D*) meson and a kaon is considered. Leading order predictions for electromagnetic branching ratios in this molecular scenario are in very poor agreement with existing data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I present results of a heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory analysis of the decays and masses of the recently discovered excited charm mesons. The present data on the electromagnetic branching ratios are consistent with heavy quark symmetry predictions and disfavor a molecular interpretation of these states. I also discuss model independent predictions for the strong decays of pentaquarks in the 10-bar representation of SU(3) which can be used to constrain the angular momentum and parity quantum numbers of these states.

Book Synopsis A Primer for Chiral Perturbation Theory by : Stefan Scherer
Download or read book A Primer for Chiral Perturbation Theory written by Stefan Scherer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chiral Perturbation Theory, as effective field theory, is a commonly accepted and well established working tool, approximating quantum chromodynamics at energies well below typical hadron masses. This volume, based on a number of lectures and supplemented with additional material, provides a pedagogical introduction for graduate students and newcomers entering the field from related areas of nuclear and particle physics. Starting with the the Lagrangian of the strong interactions and general symmetry principles, the basic concepts of Chiral Perturbation Theory in the mesonic and baryonic sectors are developed. The application of these concepts is then illustrated with a number of examples. A large number of exercises (81, with complete solutions) are included to familiarize the reader with helpful calculational techniques.

Book Synopsis Mesonic Chiral Perturbation Theory - Odd Intrinsic Parity Sector by :
Download or read book Mesonic Chiral Perturbation Theory - Odd Intrinsic Parity Sector written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present Ph. D. thesis covers two different aspects concerning the odd intrinsic parity sector of mesonic chiral perturbation theory (mesonic ChPT). The first part addresses the one-loop renormalization of its leading-order term, the so-called Wess-Zumino-Witten action. In using the saddle-point approximation, one can extract the entire one-loop part of the theory. The heat kernel technique provides all associated singularities which must be absorbed systematically. To this end, one needs to construct a most general anomalous Lagrangian density of order O(p^6). An extension of the chiral group U(n)_L x SU(n)_R to SU(n)_L x SU(n)_R x U(1)_V leads to additional monomials. The renormalized coefficients of our Lagrangian, the low-energy constants (LECs), are free parameters of the theory which have to be fixed individually. Considering a complementary model (containing vectormesonic degrees of freedom), one can calculate physical amplitudes of appropriate reactions within both frameworks. This way, we get a numerical estimation of some of the LECs. The second part is devoted to a consistent one-loop calculation of the anomalous process (virtual) photon + charged kaon -> charged kaon + neutral pion. Our results are cross-checked by reconsidering the reaction (virtual) photon + charged pion -> charged pion + neutral pion. Inserting the estimated values of the involved LECs, we can finally determine and discuss hadronic structure functions.
Book Synopsis Introduction to High Energy Physics by : Donald H. Perkins
Download or read book Introduction to High Energy Physics written by Donald H. Perkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-regarded text provides a comprehensive introduction to modern particle physics. Extensively rewritten and updated, this 4th edition includes developments in elementary particle physics, as well as its connections with cosmology and astrophysics. As in previous editions, the balance between experiment and theory is continually emphasised. The stress is on the phenomenological approach and basic theoretical concepts rather than rigorous mathematical detail. Short descriptions are given of some of the key experiments in the field, and how they have influenced our thinking. Although most of the material is presented in the context of the Standard Model of quarks and leptons, the shortcomings of this model and new physics beyond its compass (such as supersymmetry, neutrino mass and oscillations, GUTs and superstrings) are also discussed. The text includes many problems and a detailed and annotated further reading list.

Download or read book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon written by Fred Jegerlehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.

Book Synopsis Supersymmetry and String Theory by : Michael Dine
Download or read book Supersymmetry and String Theory written by Michael Dine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-04 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed dramatic developments in the field of theoretical physics. This book is a comprehensive introduction to these recent developments. It contains a review of the Standard Model, covering non-perturbative topics, and a discussion of grand unified theories and magnetic monopoles. It introduces the basics of supersymmetry and its phenomenology, and includes dynamics, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and electric-magnetic duality. The book then covers general relativity and the big bang theory, and the basic issues in inflationary cosmologies before discussing the spectra of known string theories and the features of their interactions. The book also includes brief introductions to technicolor, large extra dimensions, and the Randall-Sundrum theory of warped spaces. This will be of great interest to graduates and researchers in the fields of particle theory, string theory, astrophysics and cosmology. The book contains several problems, and password protected solutions will be available to lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521858410.
