Book Synopsis Evanston Wyoming by : Dennis J Ottley

Book excerpt: Evanston Wyoming: Boom—Bust—Politics, is a story about an old Union Pacific railroad tent city, once called “Hell on Wheels,” that eventually grew to become an amazing community in southwestern Wyoming, and about one man’s experience as a city official. Evanston survived and thrived through many boom and bust cycles by having a good strong base of loving, committed citizens. Told through the eyes of a city official who served Evanston as a three-term city council member and a three-term mayor, and meticulously documented using city council minutes, Mayor Ottley shows how this role affected his life and family, and the hell he went through trying to keep the community together through one of the most challenging boom periods in Wyoming history. The book gives a full account of the best and worst of politics in a small town, and how untruths, innuendoes, partisan politics, and right-down vicious lies came close to splitting the city. But this mayor, who was dedicated to the people and driven by his love for his community, was able to keep the economy strong and the community united.

Book Synopsis Black Gold and Blackmail by : Rosemary A. Kelanic
Download or read book Black Gold and Blackmail written by Rosemary A. Kelanic and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Gold and Blackmail seeks to explain why great powers adopt such different strategies to protect their oil access from politically motivated disruptions. In extreme cases, such as Imperial Japan in 1941, great powers fought wars to grab oil territory in anticipation of a potential embargo by the Allies; in other instances, such as Germany in the early Nazi period, states chose relatively subdued measures like oil alliances or domestic policies to conserve oil. What accounts for this variation? Fundamentally, it is puzzling that great powers fear oil coercion at all because the global market makes oil sanctions very difficult to enforce. Rosemary A. Kelanic argues that two variables determine what strategy a great power will adopt: the petroleum deficit, which measures how much oil the state produces domestically compared to what it needs for its strategic objectives; and disruptibility, which estimates the susceptibility of a state's oil imports to military interdiction—that is, blockade. Because global markets undercut the effectiveness of oil sanctions, blockade is in practice the only true threat to great power oil access. That, combined with the devastating consequences of oil deprivation to a state's military power, explains why states fear oil coercion deeply despite the adaptive functions of the market. Together, these two variables predict a state's coercive vulnerability, which determines how willing the state will be to accept the costs and risks attendant on various potential strategies. Only those great powers with large deficits and highly disruptible imports will adopt the most extreme strategy: direct control of oil through territorial conquest.

Book Synopsis Recapturing Democracy by : Mark Purcell
Download or read book Recapturing Democracy written by Mark Purcell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recapturing Democracy is a short yet synoptic introduction to urban democracy in our era of political neoliberalism and economic globalization. Combining an original argument with a number of case studies, Mark Purcell explores the condition of democracy in contemporary Western cities. Whereas many scholars focus on what Purcell calls "procedural democracy" – i.e., electoral politics and access to it – he instead assesses "substantive democracy." By this he means the people’s ability to have some say over issues of social justice, material well being, and economic equality. Neoliberalism, which advocates a diminished role for the state and increasing power for mobile capital, has diminished substantive democracy in recent times, he argues. He looks at case studies where this has occurred and at others that show how neoliberalism can be resisted in the name of substantive democracy. Ultimately, he utilizes Henri Lefebvre’s notion of "the right to the city," which encompasses substantive as well as procedural democracy for ordinary urban citizens.
