Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to construction, maintenance, pavement design, and materials engineers, pavement contractors, and others interested in the use of open-graded friction courses (OGFC) as an asphalt concrete pavement wearing surface. Information is provided on performance benefits and limitations of OGFC, material and mixture properties, and current construction practices in use in the United States and Europe. Advances in mixture design and construction techniques have overcome several of the performance limitations identified in early applications of OGFC, as well as enhanced the performance benefits associated with OGFC use. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to the use of OGFC. Experience with the design, construction, and performance of OGFC is summarized, based on a review of the literature, documentation of experience from applications in the U.S. and Europe, and site visits to several states.

Book excerpt: "A major goal of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) study is the development of recommendations for improving the design and construction of new and rehabilitated pavements to make them longer lasting. As part of the condition monitoring of the LTPP test sections, friction data are being collected on a regular basis at each test site. Friction data collection is the responsibility of the specific highway agency under whose jurisdiction the pavements are located. - The LTPP data collection guidelines for friction data recommend using the ASTM E-274 (AASHTO T242) procedure as the preferred method for obtaining data. The ASTM E-274 procedure uses a locked-wheel skid tester In a trailer assembly. Friction test results are reported as Skid Numbers (SN's). 15. Supplementary Notes This report provides an assessment of the availability, characteristics, and quality of the friction data collected as part of the LTPP study. Also, the availability of related pavement characteristics data was assessed. The report also contains recommendations for adjustments and refinements to current procedures for the collection of friction and related data. The LTPP database provides a one-stop source of reasonably good friction data collected in a systemic manner from a wide range of pavements subjected to a wide range of traffic loading and environmental conditions. The friction data will be of use for analyzing why some pavement surfaces retain good friction characteristics with time and why some surfaces show rapid deterioration in friction over time"--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: Wet pavement friction is known to be one of the most important roadway safety parameters. In this research, frictional properties of flexible (asphalt) pavements were investigated. As a part of this study, a laboratory device to polish asphalt specimens was refined and a procedure to evaluate mixture frictional properties was proposed. Following this procedure, 46 different Superpave mixtures, one stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixture and one porous friction course (PFC) mixture were tested. In addition, 23 different asphalt and two concrete field sections were also tested for friction and noise. The results of both field and laboratory measurements were used to develop an International Friction Index (IFI)-based protocol for measurement of the frictional characteristics of asphalt pavements for laboratory friction measurements. Based on the results of the study, it appears the content of high friction aggregate should be 20% or more of the total aggregate blend when used with other, polish susceptible coarse aggregates; the frictional properties increased substantially as the friction aggregate content increased above 20%. Both steel slag and quartzite were found to improve the frictional properties of the blend, though steel slag had a lower polishing rate. In general, mixes containing soft limestone demonstrated lower friction values than comparable mixes with hard limestone or dolomite. Larger nominal maximum aggregate size mixes had better overall frictional performance than smaller sized mixes. In addition, mixes with higher fineness moduli generally had higher macrotexture and friction.

Since reliable quantitative results are requested, image analysis requires highly sophisticated numerical and analytical methods—particularly for applications in medicine, security, and remote sensing, where the results of the processing may consist of vitally important data. The contributions to this book provide a good overview of the most important demands and solutions concerning this research area. In particular, the reader will find image analysis applied for feature extraction, encryption and decryption of data, color segmentation, and in the support new technologies. In all the contributions, entropy plays a pivotal role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, Dynatest conducted friction testing for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) on a representative subset of its State Trunk Highway Network. Friction testing was performed at 3,394 sites in accordance with ASTM E274 using a Dynatest 1295 Pavement Friction Tester. Testing was conducted using the ASTM E501 standard rib tire and skid numbers were adjusted (if necessary) to a speed of 40 mph (SN40R). The testing involved a variety of hot mix asphalt pavement mixtures (including stone matrix asphalt), concrete surface textures, pavement ages, and functional classifications throughout Wisconsin and the frictional characteristics were analyzed several different ways. In general, the weighted average SN40R for hot mix asphalt, stone matrix asphalt, and concrete pavements were 51.6, 42.5, and 49.5, respectively. The weighted average SN40R for the different functional classifications ranged from 50.4 to 55.5 for the rural classifications and from 41.4 to 49.9 for the urban classifications. The weighted average SN40R decreased slightly as HMA and concrete pavement ages increased. The average friction of SMA, on the other hand, was shown to increase slightly as the pavements aged. Lastly, some crash sites within the tested segments were identified and analyzed. The results showed that the frictional characteristics at these sites were comparable to other pavement sites throughout the state.
