Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of the cylindrical ceramic filter elements under vibration. These vibrations with different frequencies and amplitudes occur particularly in up/down-turning periods and during pulse cleaning but even under regular operation conditions. The geometry of a filter element with a wall thickness of about 10 mm, an outer diameter of 60 mm and an overall length of about 1500 mm with a porous support structure is not typical for ceramic materials. Therefore the risk of mechanical fatigue is high. As a result of the theoretical calculations an optimization of the element geometry shall be achieved. The optimization has to take into account the possibilities for an industrial fabrication of the elements, the possibility of a substitution in existing filter systems and of course a high filter area similar to the usual geometry has to be guaranteed.

Book excerpt: Effective high temperature ceramic filters are indispensable in the advanced, coal based power systems (IGCC and PFBC). To meet the environmental particulate emission requirements and improve thermal efficiency, ceramic filters are utilized to cleanup the hot gas particulate to protect downstream heat exchanger and gas turbine components from fouling and corrosion. The mechanical integrity of ceramic filters and an efficient dust cake removal system are the key issues for hot gas cleanup systems. The filters must survive combined stresses due to mechanical, thermal, chemical and steam attack throughout normal operations (cold back pulse cleaning jets), unexpected excessive ash accumulation, and the start up and shut down conditions. To evaluate the design and performance of ceramic filters, different long term filter testing programs were conducted. To fulfill this purpose, two Advanced Particle Filter (APF) systems were complete at Tidd PFBC Demonstration Plant in Brilliant, Ohio in late 1990 as part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Coal Technology Program. However, many filter failures 1649 were reported prior to its desired life time. In Tidd APF vessel, 28 filters failed one time, The objectives of this program were to provide an understanding of the factors pertinent to the failures of ceramic filters by characterizing filter properties and the dust cake removal mechanism, Researches were emphasized on understanding of changes of filter properties and back pulse cleaning mechanism to resolve the issues relating to filter permeability variations, ash bridging and micro-thermal cracks induced during cold back pulse cleaning. To perform failure analysis of ceramic filters, thermal numerical simulation, material laboratory analysis on filter materials and dust cake, and measurements on filter properties and back pulse intensity along filter axis within a bench scale filter chamber were conducted.

Book excerpt: Advanced integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) power system requires both hot gas desulfurization and particulate filtration to improve system thermal efficiency and overall performance. Therefore, effective high temperature ceramic filters are indispensable key component in both of the advanced IGCC and PFBC coal based power systems to perform hot gas cleanup work. To meet the environmental particulate emission requirements and improve thermal efficiency, ceramic filters are mainly utilized to cleanup the hot gas particulate to protect downstream heat exchanger and gas turbine components from fouling and corrosion. To fulfill this purpose, two Advanced Particle Filter (APF) systems were complete at Tidd PFBC Demonstration Plant, in Brilliant, Ohio in late 1990 as part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Coal Technology Program. But the most undesirable thing ever happened was the sudden functional and physical failures of filters prior to its designed life time. In Tidd APF filter vessel, twenty eight (28) filters failed one time. Significant research effort has been carried out to find out the causes that led to the early failure of filters. In this work, the studies are emphasized on the possible failure causes analysis of rigid ceramic candle filters. The objectives of this program were to provide an systematic study on the characterization of filters, material laboratory analysis on filter micro-structure, the dust cake dislodging mechanism and possible causes led to failures of ceramic filters. These research work includes 1) characterization on filter properties, 2) material laboratory investigation on cracked and un-cracked filter batches, 3) a thermal numerical simulation, 4) various physical testing on filter mechanical integrity and 5) the back pulse cleaning mechanism. These studies provide insights into variations of filter permeability, filter toughness against different mechanical loading impact, microstructure changes of filters, coal ash bridging and micro-thermal cracks induced during the cold back pulse cleaning process. To characterize the physical properties of used and unused ceramic filters, filter permeabilities and the pressure field of the gas stream were measured within a filter chamber with the use of fast response pressure transducers and an automatic data acquisition system. Used filters displayed non-uniform permeability distribution along its axis; and these variations developed asymmetric flow pattern in the filter chamber.

Book excerpt: Increasing prosperity and the steady growth of the world population lead to a strongly rising energy requirement. Therefore the saving of the available resources as well as the limitation of CO2-emission are the main reasons for developing highly efficient power stations. The use of combined cycle technology for advanced coal fired power plants allow a significantly higher conversion efficiency than it is possible in an only steam power plant. In order to increase the gas turbine inlet temperature, the filtration of fine particles is necessary. Therefore the filtration unit is one of the key components of the circulating pressurized fluidized bed combustion technology (PFBC). To use this technology more effectively, gas cleaning at high temperatures or in an reducing atmosphere is necessary. A possibility of the effective gas cleaning at high temperatures is the use of porous ceramic candle filters. The structure of such filter elements usually consists of a highly porous sup port which ensures the mechanical strength and a layer which operates as the functional part for the particle removal. To ensure a guaranteed lifetime of about 16000 h the effect of combustion or gasification atmosphere and temperature on the thermal and mechanical properties of the filter material has to be studied. The examinations and results, described in this article, are part of some previous work. This paper focuses especially on the chemical resistance and the thermal behaviour of the used ceramic filter materials.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of mechanical/microstructural evaluation, thermal shock/fatigue testing, and stress analyses of advanced hot-gas filters obtained from different manufacturers. These filters were fabricated from both monolithic ceramics and composites. The composite filters, made of both oxide and nonoxide materials, were in both as-fabricated and exposed conditions, whereas the monolithic filters were made only of nonoxide materials. Mechanical property measurement of composite filters included diametral compression testing with O-ring specimens and burst-testing of short filter segments with rubber plugs. In-situ strength of fibers in the composite filters was evaluated by microscopic technique. Thermal shock/fatigue resistance was estimated by measuring the strengths of filter specimens before and after thermal cycling from an air environment at elevated temperatures to a room temperature oil bath. Filter performance during mechanical and thermal shock/fatigue loadings was correlated with microstructural observations. Micromechanical models were developed to derive properties of composite filter constituents on the basis of measured mechanical properties of the filters. Subsequently, these properties were used to analytically predict the performance of composite filters during thermal shock loading.

Book excerpt: The mechanical integrity of ceramic filter elements is a key issue for hot gas cleanup systems. To meet the demands of advanced power systems, the filter components sustain thermal stresses of normal operations (pulse cleaning), of start-up and shut-down, and of process upsets such as excessive ash accumulation without catastrophic failure. They must also survive various mechanical loads associated with handling and assembly, normal operation, and process upsets. For near-term filter systems, the elements must also survive operating temperature of 1650°F for three years. Objectives of the testing conducted were as follows: (1) measure basic physical, mechanical and thermal properties of candle filter materials and relate these properties to in-service performance, (2) perform post-exposure testing of candle-filter materials after service at Tidd and Karhula and compare post-exposure results to as-manufactured results to evaluate property degradation, (3) based on measured properties and in-service performance, develop an understanding of material requirements for candle-filter materials and help establish property goals, and (4) establish a test protocol for evaluation of candle filter materials.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Clay based ceramic materials have been used in various parts of the world as a medium to purify and store water at points of use. United Nations and several other non governmental agencies are distributing these sustainable clay ceramic filters with embedded organic or carbonaceous materials to areas with scarcity of potable water. For example, rural areas in developing low income economies, disaster relief operation during flooding and many more on the list. Several studies have taken place on these clay ceramic filters. There is a large amount of literature documented on the flow behavior through these clay ceramic filters, field studies on microbial removal effectiveness, structural damage of filters while in use and during transport, people/societies satisfaction and health impact of using these ceramic filters. Here gravity operated frustum shaped clay ceramic filter have been manufactured using distinct volume ratios of clay and sawdust (organic material). This study has been done in order to individually assess the material parameter influencing flow, leaching and strength of these clay composite filters. Reduction in flow is seen with time and filtration events imposing the need for scrubbing/cleaning of these filters. Similarly with fractional changes in embedded organic / carbonaceous material, there is a change in micro-structural and mechanical properties. Micro-structural, flow and mechanical characteristics change geo-spatially due to non availability of similar raw material constituents at different locations around the globe. Functional challenges such as water contaminants, material composition are not the same everywhere. In this situation it is a must to investigate the stochastic effects on micro-structural, filtration flow/percolation and mechanical properties of these ceramic clay materials. The cumulative flow has been modeled using a multi-parameter stochastic multiplicative model with time and volume fraction of the organic raw material used in the initial manufacture of the filter. The asymptotic regimes of cumulative discharge have been mathematically simulated using a predictor transformation for each of the different types of samples discussed. Material studies also confirmed a linear relationship between porosity and volumetric content of organic material used in the manufacture of these clay ceramics. Mechanical properties of materials depend on the micro-structural features, compositional ratios as well as loading rates which they bear. Tensile fracture toughness development is found to follow a multiplicative behavior with respect to predictor variables like amount of organic material used for manufacturing, micro-structural porosity and applied force. Plastic flow during manufacture is found to influence mechanical properties in clay ceramics. The alkalinity of the filtrate and its changes with time and material has been studied. Stochastic multivariate regression analysis on the principles of non equilibrium processes with respect to flow taking place through the filters has been used to provide extension to regression hypothesis proposed by Onasager for aqueous solution and porous flow mechanics. It was found that transport processes were dependent on each other but they also varied with time without losing their interdependence. It is to be noted that microbial transport though these micro-nano porous ceramic filters are negligible. These filters showed similar microbial removal as confirmed by different authors earlier. This phenomenon may help in reduction of health problems due to drinking water. So in order to test these filters in an economically low income society setting, these filters were introduced in Eweje Village, Ogun State, Nigeria. A nine month survey was conducted with an objective to find the independent variables which may influence health in areas where these filter are being utilized. It was found that time of filter usage, traditional medicinal knowledge/medical facility access and money were the top influencers of health in Eweje Village, Ogun State, Nigeria.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program consists of two separate research areas. Part 1, for which this report is written, studied the high temperature corrosion of advanced ceramic hot gas filters, while Part 2 studied the long-term durability of ceramic heat exchangers to coal combustion environments. The objectives of Part 1 were to select two candidate ceramic filter materials for flow-through hot corrosion studies and subsequent corrosion and mechanical properties characterization. In addition, a thermodynamic database was developed so that thermochemical modeling studies could be performed to simulate operating conditions of laboratory reactors and existing coal combustion power plants, and to predict the reactions of new filter materials with coal combustion environments. The latter would make it possible to gain insight into problems that could develop during actual operation of filters in coal combustion power plants so that potential problems could be addressed before they arise.
