Although EAPs have existed for over 40 years, the assessment of their value has been fragmented. Contributors to this new volume--blending practical and academic insights--document concerns, address the newer issues and developments in the field of EAPs, and present case examples of actual evaluations. The range and diversity of topics reflect EAPs in transition, their growth patterns, evaluation needs, and evaluation methods. Overall, this important volume emphasizes that successful evaluations depend not only on methodological expertise but a consideration of much broader salient and societal issues.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the status of employee assistance programs in the field of education as perceived by public school personnel directors. The five major domains of this study include: (1) the structure of EAPs operating within school systems; (2) the policy and procedures outlining employee assistance services; (3) the role of the district level and building level administrators; (4) the methods of evaluation; (5) challenges to implementing or improving employee assistance in the public school setting. This study examines the status of EAPs in 117 North Carolina public school districts through a quantitative analysis of the results from a survey sent electronically to each school district's personnel director. The purpose of the survey is to establish a baseline of the present status of EAPs in education. From the data collected by the survey, the following conclusions were drawn. First, while administrators are well trained in identifying an employee in crisis and are knowledgeable in concerning referral procedures, they do not know the necessary strategies for intervention practices. Second, cost to the employee and system is cited as one of the challenges to implementing an employee assistance program in the public school setting. Third, the evaluation process requires a more formalized and in-depth approach while protecting confidentiality. Many strengths of the current EAPs were identified in the study: variety of services offered, promotion of program awareness, program accessibility, quality of EAP professionals, and assurance of maintained confidentiality.

Book excerpt: This Key Issues report addresses questions often raised by employers and union leaders setting out to develop job-based programs to help alcoholic and other troubled employees. Following chapters on the historical development and key components of EAPs, the authors discuss the importance of balance in program strategies and in corporate and union responsibilities. The authors also present examples to show the role EAPs might play when the problems of alcoholic and other troubled employees lead to arbitration and workers' compensation cases. The focus in the concluding chapter is on the future of EAPs—the need for more research and further development of educational programs for EAP practitioners.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Ergonomics, grade: 1,0, University of Nottingham, language: English, abstract: An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a service that companies can make use of to provide information and support to their employees to help solve a variety of personal and work-related issues that may affect work and therefore their performance. This paper describes the benefits, costs and outcomes of an EAP, the lack of valid research underpinning its efficiency and the factors that organisations need to consider when introducing an EAP. It is unequivocal that work has a big influence on employees. Unfortunately, this influence can both be positive and negative (Teasdale, 2006). To help prevent and limit any effects that might reduce performance or have other undesirable impacts on the employees and the business, a company can offer various services for employees to handle stress and other psychological disturbances. Companies can therefore implement some kind of workplace counselling, which offers a confidential place to speak about issues with a trained therapist. One type of counselling is the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), a strategic service for employers to provide support to their workforce. First, this paper is going to explain what an EAP exactly is and what services are offered. Then the benefits and reasons for implementing an EAP will be shown. Afterwards, the costs and possible doubts are described and brought into relation with the advantages in order to show if the model is useful and worth its costs. Finally, a guideline for factors to consider when implementing an EAP is given.

Book excerpt: This report considers what the appropriate role of employee assistance programs (EAPs) might be, with attention to their contributions to the prevention of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. The principal contribution to the cost-effectiveness of EAPs in dealing with mental health problems, especially alcoholism and other drug dependence is through prevention. EAPs are important components of comprehensive worksite AOD abuse prevention programs. Their effectiveness can be demonstrated in reducing chronic heavy drinking as the focus of socializing and recreation, and in providing increased social support and respect for the recovering alcoholic and other drug-dependent coworker. Stemming indirectly from the EAP's presence and impact, employers, employees, and the family and community at large can become more thoughtful, reasonable, and careful about the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Address to the Conference on Employee Mental Wellness by Walter B. Wriston, Chairman, Citicorp The mental well-being of employees is a subject of fundamental importance to each of us, our companies, our professions, and the nation. Both the Washington Business Group on Health and Boston University's Center for Industry and Health Care should be commended for the timely initiative this conference represents. I hope it will be come an ongoing effort to improve the mental health services to the nation's private sector workers and their dependents. I have had a deep interest in the delivery of health care for a long time, both from the perspective of a major employer and from my participation in the governance of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. It has also been my privilege to chair the Business Round table's Task Force on Health and to serve on the President's Labor Management Committee which, among other things, has been working on heaith care problems. This experience obviously does not give me any claim to special expertise on the issue of mental health. It may prove helpful, however, as we work together formulating our thoughts about the nation's health system, the role of industry, and where the mental health issue fits into the picture.
