Book excerpt: The overall objective of this thesis is to compare different head-mounted displays (HMDs) and their effects on usability, performance, and perception in different virtual reality (VR) environments. In an attempt to better understand the effects of field of view (FOV) and display resolution, the tradeoffs between them, and which is the dominant factor for VR experiences, we conducted two studies comparing the Oculus Rift Development Kit 1 (DK1), a wide-FOV low-resolution HMD, and the Sensics zSight, a narrow-FOV high-resolution HMD. Based on the results of our two experiments, we conclude that a wider FOV appears to be more important for visual scanning, physical locomotion, and hand-based manipulation tasks than a higher display resolution. Additionally, a wide FOV leads to a greater sense of presence. However, we found that it induces more simulator sickness when used with a virtual travel technique, such as Seven League Boots.

Book excerpt: Adequate immersion in virtual environments is a key to having a successful virtual simulation experience. As people have more of a sense of "being there" (telepresence) when they experience a virtual simulation, their experience becomes more realistic and therefore they are able to make valid assessments of their environments. This thesis presents the results of a study focused on the evaluation of participants' perceptional and preferential differences between a haptic and non-haptic virtual experience coupled with the use and non-use of a head-mounted display (HMD). Several measurements were used in order to statistically compare the performance of participants from four groups, haptic with the HMD, non-haptic with the HMD, haptic without the HMD, and non-haptic without the HMD. The study found that the virtual environment (VE) display type, either HMD or desktop monitor, affected participants' ability to detect mechanism differences related to motion, arm length, and distances (mechanism length and location) as well as influenced the amount of time required to evaluate each mechanism design during trial one. The treatment type (haptic or non-haptic) affected participants' ability to estimate mechanism differences, influenced the detection of mechanism arm length differences, and resulted in differences in the amount of time needed to evaluate each mechanism design. Regardless of which treatment participants initially experienced, participants overwhelmingly preferred the haptic treatment to the non?-haptic treatment. The results of this study will help scientists make more informed decisions related to haptic device utilization, as well as head-mounted display use, an the interaction of the two. Several recommendations for future human factor studies related to haptic sensation, HMD use, and virtual reality are also included.

Virtual reality (VR) has become a popular design visualization tool, and head-mounted displays (HMDs) offer a potentially distinctive way of displaying VR environments. As HMDs become increasingly accessible, industry leaders are beginning to explore their use as a design prototyping, visualization, and communication tool. Before HMDs become a new medium for visualization, it is imperative to understand the perceptual and user experience (UX) differences between HMDs and screen displays. In the present study, participant's rate perceived aesthetic value, spatial presence, and affective reactions (i.e. emotions) after touring two virtual hotel environments, one on a stereoscopic HMD, and one the second on a 65” 4K Ultra HD (UHD) screen display. Using a 2 (display medium types) X 2 (displayed environments) within subject's design, this study was conducted in a lab experiment with 80 participants, split between design and non-design backgrounds. Randomization of both the hotel environment and display medium reduced any potential carryover effects between environments and displays. Within each hotel environment, participants toured a series of three interior perspectives. After exiting each hotel, participants completed a questionnaire measuring UX and perception variables. UX, i.e. process, variables (spatial presence and affective reactions) were measured through the MEC-Spatial Presence Questionnaire, self-assessment manikin (SAM), and semantic differential. An expanded version of the visual properties questionnaire measured aesthetic value. The effect of display medium across all variables, environments, and disciplines are explored and recommendations for future HMD specific applications are suggested.

To understand if VR HMDs can be used for planning and training in the context of manual order picking, this thesis provides the results of a large-scale randomized controlled study in which order picking has been compared between a virtual and a real environment. The results imply that VR HMDs can indeed be used by manufacturers and warehouse operators in a rack planning process if the reduction of searching times or the perceived workload is in focus. Additionally, the findings enable the use of VR HMDs for scientific research on human-centred rack design. Finally, the thesis highlights the usability of VR HMDs for training manual order picking activities.

The VR industry netted over 7 billion dollars in 2013, which was a 4 billion dollar increase from 2012 (Plunkett, 2014). Google and Facebook each invested over 2 billion in Virtual reality in 2013 (Gelles, 2014). New Head-Mounted Display (HMD) systems, which provide realistic VR experiences, are lightweight, portable, and user-friendly, dropping in cost the past few years (Cakmakci, 2006; Rolland, 2000). Multiple studies have concluded specific benefits of HMD VR technology including perceptions of realism, involvement of participants, and learning outcomes (Abulrub , 2013; Bayarri, 1996; Fast, 2004; Li, 2005; Santos, 2009; Sielhorst, 2004;Stone, 2013). The current study investigated the effects of HMD systems on participant's interest. Change in participant interest and immersion were measured in the current study. Analyses revealed that immersion through VR did not did not change interest level significantly (mean=5.15, SD= 1.084, p=.73). However, the results showed that HMD systems were significantly more immersive than a desktop condition (mean=3.83, SD= 1.46, p=.04).
