This has led to questions like that of the behaviour of functions by repeating this substitution and when the number of iterations tends to infinity. The terms 'orbit' and 'chaos' appropriately describe this behaviour. Dynamical systems and the theory of functional equations play important roles in this field.

Book excerpt: The theory of functional equations has been developed in a rapid and productive way in the second half of the Twentieth Century. First of all, this is due to the fact that the mathematical applications raised the investigations of newer and newer types of functional equations. At the same time, the self development of this theory was also very fruitful. This can be followed in many monographs that treat and discuss the various methods and approaches. These developments were also essentially influenced by a number jour nals, for instance, by the Publicationes Mathematicae Debrecen (founded in 1953) and by the Aequationes Mathematicae (founded in 1968), be cause these journals published papers from the field of functional equa tions readily and frequently. The latter journal also publishes the yearly report of the International Symposia on Functional Equations and a comprehensive bibliography of the most recent papers. At the same time, there are periodically and traditionally organized conferences in Poland and in Hungary devoted to functional equations and inequali ties. In 2000, the 38th International Symposium on Functional Equations was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Debrecen in Noszvaj, Hungary. The report about this meeting can be found in Aequationes Math. 61 (2001), 281-320.

Book excerpt: This elementary book provides some state-of-the-art research results on broad disciplinary sciences on complex networks. It presents an in-depth study with detailed description of dynamics, controls and applications of complex networks. The contents of this book can be summarized as follows. First, the dynamics of complex networks, for example, the cluster dynamic analysis by using kernel spectral methods, community detection algorithms in bipartite networks, epidemiological modeling with demographics and epidemic spreading on multi-layer networks, are studied. Second, the controls of complex networks are investigated including topics like distributed finite-time cooperative control of multi-agent systems by applying homogenous-degree and Lyapunov methods, composite finite-time containment control for disturbed second-order multi-agent systems, fractional-order observer design of multi-agent systems, chaos control and anticontrol of complex systems via Parrondos game and many more. Third, the applications of complex networks provide some applicable carriers, which show the importance of theories developed in complex networks. In particular, a general model for studying time evolution of transition networks, deflection routing in complex networks, recommender systems for social networks analysis and mining, strategy selection in networked evolutionary games, integration and methods in computational biology, are discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the two main directions of one-dimensional dynamics. The first has its roots in the Sharkovskii theorem, which describes the possible sets of periods of all cycles (periodic orbits) of a continuous map of an interval into itself. The whole theory, which was developed based on this theorem, deals mainly with combinatorial objects, permutations, graphs, etc.; it is called combinatorial dynamics. The second direction has its main objective in measuring the complexity of a system, or the degree of “chaos” present in it; for that the topological entropy is used. The book analyzes the combinatorial dynamics and topological entropy for the continuous maps of either an interval or the circle into itself.

Book excerpt: This book is essentially devoted to complex properties (Phase plane structure and bifurcations) of two-dimensional noninvertible maps, i.e. maps having either a non-unique inverse, or no real inverse, according to the plane point. They constitute models of sets of discrete dynamical systems encountered in Engineering (Control, Signal Processing, Electronics), Physics, Economics, Life Sciences. Compared to the studies made in the one-dimensional case, the two-dimensional situation remained a long time in an underdeveloped state. It is only since these last years that the interest for this research has increased. Therefore the book purpose is to give a global presentation of a matter, available till now only in a partial form. Fundamental notions and tools (such as “critical manifolds”), as the most part of results, are accompanied by many examples and figures.

Book excerpt: The journal aequationes mathematicae publishes papers in pure and applied mathematics and, in particular, articles on functional equations, combinatorics and dynamical systems. Its 50th volume appears in 1995. To mark this occasion, we are publishing in book form a repre sentative collection of outstanding survey papers assembled for our anniversary issue of aequationes mathematicae. The articles by Quackenbush, Targonski and Moszner discuss composition of functions from different points of view: universal algebra, dynamical systems (iteration) and functional equa tions. The Ono-Robbins-Wahl and the Vince papers, on number theory and tiles, respectively, are thematically linked by lattices. Combinatorics, in turn, links the Vince paper with that of Tutte, whose subject is chromatic sums, its tools differential and functional equations. The Paganoni-Ratz and the Forti papers deal with conditional functional equations and with the related topic of stability. Applications to the social and behavioral sciences, in particular to aggregation (and some theory) are presented in the paper by J. Aczel. The aim of the collection is to survey selected fields of current interest. We trust that it will be useful and informative for researchers, teachers, graduate and advanced undergraduate stu dents of mathematics, and for those interested in applications in related fields. lanDs Aczel Aequationes Mathematicae 50 (1995) 1 0001-9054/95/020001-01 $1.50 + 0.20/0 University of Waterloo © 1995 Birkhiiuser Verlag, Basel Editorial Volume 50 of Aequationes Mathematicae This is the fiftieth volume of aequationes mathematicae. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaotic behavior arises in a variety of control settings. In some cases, it is beneficial to remove this behavior; in others, introducing or taking advantage of the existing chaotic components can be useful for example in cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control surveys the latest methods for inserting, taking advantage of, or removing chaos in a variety of applications. This book supplies the theoretical and pedagogical basis of chaos in control systems along with new concepts and recent developments in the field. Presented in three parts, the book examines open-loop analysis, closed-loop control, and applications of chaos in control systems. The first section builds a background in the mathematics of ordinary differential and difference equations on which the remainder of the book is based. It includes an introductory chapter by Christian Mira, a pioneer in chaos research. The next section explores solutions to problems arising in observation and control of closed-loop chaotic control systems. These include model-independent control methods, strategies such as H-infinity and sliding modes, polytopic observers, normal forms using homogeneous transformations, and observability normal forms. The final section explores applications in wireless transmission, optics, power electronics, and cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control distills the latest thinking in chaos while relating it to the most recent developments and applications in control. It serves as a platform for developing more robust, autonomous, intelligent, and adaptive systems.

Each volume in the series shall be devoted to the mathematical analysis that has been applied or potentially applicable to the solutions of scientific, engineering, and social problems. For the past twenty five years, there has been an explosion of interest in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems. Mathematical techniques developed during this period have been applied to important nonlinear problems ranging from physics and chemistry to ecology and economics. All these developments have made dynamical systems theory an important and attractive branch of mathematics to scientists in many disciplines. This rich mathematical subject has been partially represented in this collection of 45 papers by some of the leading researchers in the area. This volume contains 45 state-of-art articles on the mathematical theory of dynamical systems by leading researchers. It is hoped that this collection will lead new direction in this field.Contributors: B Abraham-Shrauner, V Afraimovich, N U Ahmed, B Aulbach, E J Avila-Vales, F Battelli, J M Blazquez, L Block, T A Burton, R S Cantrell, C Y Chan, P Collet, R Cushman, M Denker, F N Diacu, Y H Ding, N S A El-Sharif, J E Fornaess, M Frankel, R Galeeva, A Galves, V Gershkovich, M Girardi, L Gotusso, J Graczyk, Y Hino, I Hoveijn, V Hutson, P B Kahn, J Kato, J Keesling, S Keras, V Kolmanovskii, N V Minh, V Mioc, K Mischaikow, M Misiurewicz, J W Mooney, M E Muldoon, S Murakami, M Muraskin, A D Myshkis, F Neuman, J C Newby, Y Nishiura, Z Nitecki, M Ohta, G Osipenko, N Ozalp, M Pollicott, Min Qu, Donal O-Regan, E Romanenko, V Roytburd, L Shaikhet, J Shidawara, N Sibony, W-H Steeb, C Stoica, G Swiatek, T Takaishi, N D Thai Son, R Triggiani, A E Tuma, E H Twizell, M Urbanski; T D Van, A Vanderbauwhede, A Veneziani, G Vickers, X Xiang, T Young, Y Zarmi.
