Yet a broader, international look means also studying the major upheavals that occurred throughout the world, such as wars and globalisation. This volume first reviews the history of the church in the 20th century from an international and interdisciplinary vantage point and takes a look at the most important themes and conflicts that marked that often tension-filled time, among others the two world wars, globalisation, the broad number of continuities and discontinuities, the influence.

Book excerpt: This paper aims to explore, whether these two requirements are fulfilled. The following is that a too optimistic assessment of the Co-decision procedure, as a tool for more legitimacy cannot be justified. In order to demonstrate my thesis, I will firstly discuss the general problem for European Citizens with legislation at the national and European level, specifically regarding the critical question, of how the EU can bring the people closer to the Union. Secondly, it seems useful to deliver a more comprehensive description of the history of the Co-decision procedure, because this gives an insight into the development of legislation in the Community.

Book Synopsis Europe’s Grand Strategy by : Bart M. J. Szewczyk
Download or read book Europe’s Grand Strategy written by Bart M. J. Szewczyk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes that the European Union should craft a grand strategy to navigate the new world order based on a four-pronged approach. First, European decision-makers (both in Brussels and across EU capitals) should take a broader view of their existential interests at stake and devote greater time and resources to serving them within the wider cause of the liberal order. Second, Europe needs to help reinvigorate the West by restoring a sense of solidarity through fairer distribution of benefits and burdens. Third, it should develop separate strategies for parts of the world, such as Russia and China, where liberal values are not likely to be attainable in the foreseeable future yet order is still necessary. Fourth, Europe needs to clarify its core interests elsewhere and help stabilize the Middle East and Africa. With this book, the author seeks to lay the essential building blocks for developing a European strategy, which is a complex process involving multiple decision-makers and institutions.

Download or read book Gold Laundering written by Mark Pieth and published by Salis Verlag. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eye-opening book, Mark Pieth gives an in-depth insight into how the global gold market works, what role Switzerland plays in it, where the hidden abuses lie and how human rights in the gold industry can be protected in a credible way. This hard-hitting, exclusively researched depiction of a key area of economic policy takes us both to the glittering world of gold refining and to the world's worst mining regions. Mark Pieth illuminates the historical roots of the gold trade before turning his attention to today's supply chains, from mines to refineries and clandestine intermediaries to consumers: central banks, investors, jewellers and watchmakers. He reveals some of the horrific problems caused by gold mining that still receive little attention due to a lack of binding regulations: severe environmental destruction, forced labour and human trafficking, land grabbing, stolen assets and money laundering. The author manages to make these complex topics easy to understand and hard to ignore. Switzerland is not only a major power in the financial sector and commodity market – whose scandalous workings were revealed by the Swiss NGO Berne Declaration (now Public Eye) in the book Rohstoff, also published by Salis. Switzerland is also a leader in global gold trading. But while the EU, for example, has recently turned existing OECD guidelines into binding law, Switzerland continues to rely on voluntary self-regulation.

Book Synopsis America's Century in Europe by : Mary Nolan
Download or read book America's Century in Europe written by Mary Nolan and published by Wallstein Verlag. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Transnational history as a key to national history. Americanization and anti-Americanism have been pervasive, shifting and contested phenomena in twentieth-century Germany and Europe. They have profoundly shaped individual nations and transatlantic relations. Mary Nolan, a scholar of German and transnational history, investigates how Europeans were influenced by and negotiated with American economic, cultural and political models, creating hybrid societies and polities that sometimes looked markedly different from the United States, but more recently, with economic and migration crises and right-radical populism, mirror developments there. As Mary Nolan's essays show, diplomatic relations and visions of the global order have been a persistent source of transatlantic conflict. So too have been questions of women, gender and sexuality. Transatlantic relations are frequently narrated in highly gendered ways. Nolan demonstrates that transnational history offers new insights into both national histories and international relations.
