Book Synopsis Islam and Judeo-Christianity by : Jacques Ellul
Download or read book Islam and Judeo-Christianity written by Jacques Ellul and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of Islam and Judeo-Christianity is the relationship between these three faiths under three headings that are often promoted as a basis for commonality between them (sons of Abraham, monotheism, and religions of the book). Ellul incisively critiques these expressions, finding less common ground than is generally accepted and a pattern of conformism. The English edition of Islam and Judeo-Christianity includes a foreword by David Gill and Dominique North Ellul, and Alain Besancon's extensive foreword to the French edition of Islam and Judeo-Christianity (relocated to the appendices in this edition). The book also includes other writings on this theme by Ellul: Firstly, chapter 5 from Ellul's Subversion of Christianity where "Islam is portrayed as a non-progressive, totalitarian religion, founded on the concept of divine right, and credited with having introduced into Christianity the idea of holy war." Secondly, Ellul's foreword to The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians under Islam written by Bat Ye'or (1985), which documents the conditions of Jews and Christians in Muslim society. Thirdly, Ellul's foreword to The Decline of Eastern Christianity under Islam: From Jihad to Dhimmitude, also by Bat Ye'or (1996), which further explores the history of Jews and Christians under Islam.
Book Synopsis Intertwinements of Law and Medicine by : Jan M. Broekman
Download or read book Intertwinements of Law and Medicine written by Jan M. Broekman and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general aim of this book is to discuss a number of important and interrelated issues in life of modern man in medicine and the law. That discussion is not only on material aspects of those issues but also on the forms of knowledge which enable us to develop the relevant arguments and to cope with related experiences in everyday life. These issues are on the whole understood in terms of the 'law-medicine relationship' or the 'law and medicine interface'. However, a reflexion on the philosophical and cultural basis of those expressions shows the shortcomings of that appraoch and the need for an understanding of that relationship in terms of intertwining discourses.

Book Synopsis Presence in the Modern World by : Jacques Ellul
Download or read book Presence in the Modern World written by Jacques Ellul and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presence in the Modern World is Jacques Ellul's most foundational book, combining his social analysis with his theological orientation. Appearing first in French in 1948, and later in English as The Presence of the Kingdom, it has reached the statusof a classic that retains all of its relevance dealing with today's challenges. How should we respond to such complex forces as technology or the state? How can we communicate with one another, despite the problems inner to modern forms of media? Dowe have hope for the future of our civilisation? Ellul responds by describing how a Christian's unique presence in the world can make a difference. Instead of acting as 'sociological beings', we must commit ourselves to the kind of revolution that will occur only when we become radically aware of our present situation and undertake 'a ferocious and passionate destruction of myths'. In this way, states Ellul, we become the medium for God's action in the modern world.
Book Synopsis Technique, Discourse, and Consciousness by : David Lovekin
Download or read book Technique, Discourse, and Consciousness written by David Lovekin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the French thinker Jacques Ellul (1912–1994) and his historical, biblical, and social analyses of how technology manipulates and impoverishes modern thought, culture, and language. In the spirit of Georg Hegel and Ernst Cassirer, Ellul explores how technology begins in myths, stories, and religion, advances to tools, and then develops into data, algorithms, and abstract systems which are detached from human bodies and communities. Efficiency then becomes an absolute in all areas of human life, and the mentality of technique becomes lost in its creations. These modern symbols, posing as ultimate human goods and values, are denigrated by technique, leaving humanity awash in clichés, in groundless social media, and in blathering slogans that sustain the illusion that politics and culture have now become.

Book Synopsis A Philosophy of European Union Law by : Jan M. Broekman
Download or read book A Philosophy of European Union Law written by Jan M. Broekman and published by Peeters. This book was released on 1999 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the European Union a new Walden? Although a contrast in form and format, the Union is surprisingly close to the latter's underlying philosophy. One can read this proximity in the Treaties or the many facets of the European idea which mirrors in the Union's emerging legal system. Today there is no longer a Union of a limited number of Nation States desiring to end divisions among themselves, to acquire mutual respect and prosperity or a higher standard of living and working conditions for its members. European citizenship shows a global orientation and is in continuous competition with the discourse of a globalizing economy and its Internet democracy. Analyses of concepts such as political geography, global, (supra)national and regional citizenship, democracy, learning society, native tongue and market lead to the insight that the Union's legal system wishes to ensure its citizens a legally engendered, formatted and protected global position for action. Walden's philosophy has a new face.
