Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LE SUJET DE CETTE THESE EST L'ETUDE DES PROPRIETES MORPHOLOGIQUES ET ELECTRONIQUES DES DIFFERENTS SURFACES DE SILICIUM AFIN DE MIEUX CORRELER LES PARTICULARITES D'UNE STRUCTURE SUPERFICIELLE AUSSI BIEN IDENTIFIEE QUE POSSIBLE, MEME SI ELLE EST DEFFECTUEUSE, AVEC SES PROPRIETES ELECTRONIQUES, Y COMPRIS DE DIFFUSION DES ELECTRONS DANS LE PROCESSUS DE PHOTOEMISSION. LES TECHNIQUES UTILISEES SONT LA SPECTROSCOPIE DE RENDEMENT DE PHOTOEMISSION, LA SPECTROSCOPIE DE PHOTOEMISSION RESOLUE ANGULAIREMENT DANS L'ULTRAVIOLET, LA DIFFRACTION D'ELECTRONS LENTS ET LA SPECTROMETRIE AUGER. DANS UNE PREMIERE PARTIE, UNE ETUDE DETAILLEE A ETE FAITE EN VUE D'ANALYSER LES DIFFERENTS MECANISMES DE DIFFUSION DE SURFACE SUSCEPTIBLES D'AFFECTER LE PROCESSUS DE PHOTOEMISSION. EN SE BASANT SUR LES PREVISIONS THEORIQUES DE KANE, NOUS AVONS MONTRE QUE LE PROCESSUS DE PHOTOEMISSION DEPEND DU TYPE DES TRANSITIONS ELECTRONIQUES (DIRECTES OU INDIRECTES) ET DE LA NATURE ET LA GEOMETRIE DES DEFAUTS. CETTE ETUDE A REVELE QUE L'HYPOTHESE DE CONSERVATION DE LA COMPOSANTE PARALLELE DU MOMENT DE L'ELECTRON AU FRANCHISSEMENT DE LA SURFACE EST RAREMENT VALABLE. DANS LA DEUXIEME PARTIE CONSACREE A LA FACE (110) DU SILICIUM, NOUS AVONS MONTRE QUE CETTE SURFACE NOMINALE PRESENTE UNE RECONSTRUCTION 16X2 A DEUX DOMAINES, QU'ELLE A UNE BANDE D'ETATS DE SURFACE OCCUPES LARGE COMME LA SI(111)7X7. ELLE IMPLIQUE DONC PLUSIEURS PLANS ATOMIQUES. NOUS AVONS, AUSSI, ETUDIE UNE SURFACE (110) VICINALE OBTENUE EN DESORIENTANT LE PLAN DE LA SURFACE DE 422' DANS UNE DIRECTION DE LA FAMILLE111. CETTE SURFACE S'EST AVERE MONODOMAINE, ORDONNEE ET EST RECONSTRUITE 8X2. SA STRUCTURE LOCALE EST FAITE DE PLUSIEURS CONFIGURATIONS COMME DES ADATOMES OU DES DIMERES PLUS OU MOINS DEFORMEES GEOMETRIQUEMENT. LE DERNIER CHAPITRE A CONCERNE L'ETUDE DES INTERACTIONS DES SURFACES SI(110) AVEC L'HYDROGENE ATOMIQUE, L'INDIUM ET L'OXYGENE. NOUS AVONS D'ABORD REUSSI A PASSIVER LES SURFACES SI(110) PAR HYDROGENATION A CHAUD. LE RENDEMENT DE PHOTOEMISSION CONFIRME LE CARACTERE DIFFUSANT DE CETTE SURFACE. L'ETUDE DE L'INTERFACE SI(110)/IN A 500C A MONTRE QUE NOUS OBTENONS UNE RECONSTRUCTION 5X2 POUR DES RECOUVREMENTS SITUES ENTRE 0.3 MC ET 2 MC

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CETTE THESE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE PAR PHOTOEMISSION INVERSE DES ETATS DE CONDUCTION DE LA FACE (111) DU SILICIUM SOUS SES DIFFERENTES FORMES: SI(111)-77 ET SI(111)-11 NON RECONSTRUITE STABILISEE PAR L'HYDROGENE OU L'ARSENIC QUI SATURENT LES LIAISONS PENDANTES. NOUS MONTRONS QUE L'INTERFACE H:SI(111)-11 NE POSSEDE PAS D'ETATS ELECTRONIQUES DE SURFACE INDUITS PAR LA PRESENCE DE L'HYDROGENE. POUR LA DIRECTION IM DE LA ZONE DE BRILLOUIN DE SURFACE, LES SPECTRES DE PHOTOEMISSION INVERSE CORRESPONDANT A 2 DIRECTIONS SYMETRIQUES DES ELECTRONS INCIDENTS PAR RAPPORT A LA NORMALE SONT TRES DISSEMBLABLES. CETTE ASYMETRIE, LIEE A LA DISPOSITION DES ATOMES DE SURFACE, CONSTITUE UNE SIGNATURE DE LA STRUCTURE 11. NOUS LA RETROUVONS DANS LE CAS DE L'INTERFACE AS:SI(111)-11 DONT L'ORGANISATION GENERALE EST SEMBLABLE. L'ELECTRONEGATIVITE DE L'ARSENIC DE PREMIERE COUCHE PROVOQUE LA DESCENTE DES ETATS ELECTRONIQUES DE SI(111)-11 DONT L'UN SE RETROUVE DANS LA BANDE INTERDITE. NOUS AVONS MIS CET ETAT EN EVIDENCE, VERIFIANT AINSI AVEC UNE GRANDE PRECISION LA THEORIE DE HYBERTSEN ET LOUIE QUI PREVOIT CET EFFET. LA DERNIERE PARTIE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE DU SYSTEME CAF#2/SI(111). A FAIBLE RECOUVREMENT, UNE RECONSTRUCTION 33R30 EST OBTENUE ET ANALYSEE. A PLUS FORT RECOUVREMENT (>2 TRICOUCHES), LA COUCHE DE FLUOR DE SURFACE EST DESORBEE SOUS L'ACTION DES ELECTRONS INCIDENTS, REVELANT UNE SURFACE PARFAITEMENT METALLIQUE COMPOSEE DE CA#1#+ EN LIEU ET PLACE DE LA SURFACE ISOLANTE ATTENDUE. LA DISPERSION DES ETATS DE CONDUCTION DE CETTE SURFACE EST DETERMINEE ET PRESENTEE, EN RELATION AVEC DES RESULTATS DE PHOTOEMISSION ANTERIEURS

Book excerpt: The book is a history of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) as applied to the growth of semiconductor thin films (note that it does not cover the subject of metal thin films). It begins by examining the origins of MBE, first of all looking at the nature of molecular beams and considering their application to fundamental physics, to the development of nuclear magnetic resonance and to the invention of the microwave MASER. It shows how molecular beams of silane (SiH4) were used to study the nucleation of silicon films on a silicon substrate and how such studies were extended to compound semiconductors such as GaAs. From such surface studies in ultra-high vacuum the technique developed into a method of growing high quality single crystal films of a wide range of semiconductors. Comparing this with earlier evaporation methods of deposition and with other epitaxial deposition methods such as liquid phase and vapour phase epitaxy (LPE and VPE). The text describes the development of MBE machines from the early 'home-made' variety to that of commercial equipment and show how MBE was gradually refined to produce high quality films with atomic dimensions. This was much aided by the use of various in-situ surface analysis techniques, such as reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and mass spectrometry, a feature unique to MBE. It looks at various modified versions of the basic MBE process, then proceed to describe their application to the growth of so-called 'low-dimensional structures' (LDS) based on ultra-thin heterostructure films with thickness of order a few molecular monolayers. Further chapters cover the growth of a wide range of different compounds and describe their application to fundamental physics and to the fabrication of electronic and opto-electronic devices. The authors study the historical development of all these aspects and emphasise both the (often unexpected) manner of their discovery and development and the unique features which MBE brings to the growth of extremely complex structures with monolayer accuracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.
