Book excerpt: Les affaissements de terrain de grande ampleur résultent de l'effondrement de cavités souterraines issues de l'activité industrielle humaine ou formées naturellement par la circulation d'eau. Leur impact sur le bâti en surface est généralement important comme l'attestent les exemples récents des affaissements d'Auboué (1996) et de Roncourt (1999) qui ont endommagé plus de cinq cents bâtiments et ouvrages ou le fontis sur le chantier METEOR en 2003. Il est donc nécessaire de prévoir les mouvements du sol de surface (tassements et déformation horizontale) résultants et de déterminer l'influence que peut avoir la présence d'une structure en surface sur la forme et l'amplitude de ces mouvements. Cette thèse s'articule autour de la thématique suivante : évaluation des risques urbains liés aux mouvements de sol dus à la présence de cavités souterraines et interaction avec le bâti. La première partie porte sur la conception d'un modèle réduit physique permettant de représenter un effondrement de cavité (fontis). Elle apporte une contribution innovante à la conception de modèles réduits physiques 1g par la mise au point d'un matériau analogique cohérent, dérivé du matériau de Schneebeli. Des essais sont menés pour caractériser l'influence de l'interaction sol-structure lors d'un tel phénomène. Ensuite un modèle numérique est développé, permettant l'emploi conjoint de deux codes de calcul basés sur une approche en milieu continu et sur la mécanique des éléments distincts . Les résultats sont comparés avec ceux du modèle expérimental. La dernière étape est une confrontation de cet outil dans un essai de rétroanalyse d'un fontis réel survenu dans le massif de l'Hautil en 1991.

The main goal of this monograph is to demonstrate the potential and effectiveness of analytical methods in applied high-speed penetration mechanics for two classes of problem. The first class of problem is shape optimization of impactors penetrating into ductile, concrete and some composite media. The second class of problem comprises investigation of ballistic properties and optimization of multi-layered shields, including spaced and two-component ceramic shields. Despite the massive use of mathematical techniques, the obtained results have a clear engineering meaning and are presented in an easy-to-use form. One of the chapters is devoted solely to some common approximate models, and this is the first time that a comprehensive description of the localized impactor/medium interaction approach is given. In the monograph the authors present systematically their theoretical results in the field of high-speed impact dynamics obtained during the last decade which only partially appeared in scientific journals and conferences proceedings.
