Book excerpt: Une synthèse théorique des instabilités paramétriques des ondes électromagnétiques du plasma a permis de dégager les paramètres importants de l'évolution d'une instabilité particulière : la diffusion Raman stimulée de l'onde laser. Celle-ci génère des électrons suprathermiques constituant un obstacle majeur à la réussite de la fusion inertielle. Des simulations numériques de plasmas monodimensionnels ont été réalisés à l'aide de deux codes de simulation écrits pour cette thèse : l'un de type particulaire permettant de suivre l'ensemble des phénomènes physiques dont la création d'électrons rapides, mais coûteux en temps calcul, l'autre de type couplages d'ondes autorisant le seul couplage de modes propres du plasma. Deux points ont été analysés : (1) l'influence d'une non-monochromaticité de l'onde laser sur la distribution des électrons rapides, énergie et température, en plasma homogène. Si l'énergie chute ace l'élargissement spectral, la température, peut au contraire augmenter. (2) l'influence de la mobilité ionique en plasma homgène et inhomogène en densité. L'allègement des ions et la diminution de leur température contribue à inhiber la diffusion Raman et à diminuer la température des électrons rapides. L'instabilité des ondes plasma amplifiée par le Raman en est la raison. L'inhomogénéité en densité du plasma, conduisant en l'abscence d'ions mobiles à une réduction du Raman, a son influence renforcée par la mobilité ionique, excepté en plasma faiblement inhomogène loin de la densité de coupure de l'onde diffusée du Raman. L'observation des compétitions d'instabilités a permis d'affiner les nombreux scénarios distincts de saturation du Raman. L'utilisation actuelle de lasers de longueurs d'ondes de plus en plus courtes permettant une meilleure absorption laser par collisions électrons-ions conduit à augmenter les seuils d'apparition des instabilités. La prédominance des collisions sur l' inhomogénéité du plasma a été mise en évidence expérimentalement sur l'instabilité à 2 plasmons avec un laser ultra-violet.

Le couplage du laser au plasma provoque l'apparition de nombreux phénomènes nonlinéaires tels que l'autofocalisation relativiste, les instabilités Raman, I'excitation et le déferle-ment d'ondes plasma. Dans ce régime dit du "sillage automodulé", ces effets se combinent et aboutissent à l'accélération des électrons du plasma à des vitesses relativistes. Dans une première partie, les effets nonlinéaires ont d'abord été étudiés. Une méthode originale utilisant des impulsions laser à dérive de fréquence a permis de mesurer la dynamique temporelle des instabilités Raman. Les ré-sultats ont montré que l'instabilité Raman arrière a lieu sur le front montant de l'impulsion et que le Raman avant est plutôt situé en queue d'impulsion. L'autofocalisation a également été étudiée à l'aide d'un diagnostic d'ombro-scopie. Les résultats ont montré que la puissance n'est pas le seul paramètre régissant l'autofocalisation : la durée de l'impulsion laser doit être comparée au temps de mouvement des particules dans le plasma: Wp-1 pour les électrons et Wpi-1 pour les ions. En particulier, lorsque la durée d'impulsion est trop courte, I'autofocalisation relativiste n'a pas lieu. Book excerpt: "The two-plasmon-decay (TPD) instability and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) are important processes in the laser-plasma interaction that are capable of influencing the absorption of laser light and the generation of hot electrons in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. The linear stage of the SRS and TPD instability near the quarter-critical density have been modeled by a new fluid-type code GLINTS. The absolute growth of the SRS and the TPD instability have been identified and their growth rates can be comparable. The growth rates obtained from the GLINTS simulations are in good agreement with the theoretical growth rates. The TPD in the case of oblique laser incidence have been studied. The analytical results for the TPD growth rates and thresholds have been obtained and have been compared with the TPD-only GLINTS simulations. The TPD thresholds are found to decrease close to cos2q scaling as the angle of incidence q increases. Different from the results of the theory considering the SRS alone, the GLINTS simulations including both the TPD and the SRS have shown that the growth rates of the SRS driven by a obliquely incident laser beam may increase when q increases, which can lead to a lower-than-theoretical-prediction instability threshold. The linear and saturation stage of the TPD and the SRS have been studied in two and three spatial dimensions (2-D and 3-D) using the particle-in-cell (PIC) code OSIRIS. By comparing the spectra of the plasma waves in the 2-D and 3-D PIC simulations, the TPD and the stimulated Raman sidescattering have been found to coexist near and below quarter-critical density in the 3-D simulations. The interaction of the TPD and the SRS requires the 3-D modeling. In the PIC simulations, the clear link between the hot electrons energy flux and the TPD-generated plasma waves has been demonstrated. The PIC simulations have shown that SRS is less effective in accelerating electrons than TPD. The hot electron energy flux in the 3-D simulations is found to be smaller than in the 2-D simulations for the same parameters"--Pages v-vi.

Cependant la configuration ne permettait pas de l'utiliser à des fins industrielles. Il a fallu attendre les années 90, avec l'arrivée des diodes laser et des réseaux de Bragg pour que la configuration de ce laser évolue vers un système "tout fibre" utilisables dans des applications industrielles. Cependant pour rendre ce système vraiment attractif, la puissance de sortie doit être stable. C'est dans ce contexte que se situe ce travail de thèse. Deux axes essentiels sont développés : l'étude du laser Raman muni d'une fibre standard de télécommunication (laser LSF) et l'étude du laser Raman muni d'une fibre à maintien de polarisation (laser LPMF). Les expériences ont montré que la dynamique du LSF est très riche. En effet la puissance de sortie du signal Stokes est instable et ces instabilités dépendent de la polarisation des différentes ondes se propageant dans la cavité du laser. Le laser PMF quant à lui a un comportement différent : quelque soit l'état de polarisation de l'onde pompe incidente, le signal Stokes en sortie est stable. De plus, nous avons mené une étude résolue en polarisation du laser PMF, mettant en évidence le fait que le laser PMF est constitué de deux lasers indépendants linéairement polarisés le long des axes de biréfringence de la fibre. Ce travail de thèse a également consisté en la modélisation théorique du LSF ainsi que du PMF. Les résultats obtenus sont qualitativement très proches des résultats expérimentaux. Pour cela nous avons inclus dans notre modélisation les effets liés à la polarisation tels que l'effet Kerr et la biréfringence des fibres utilisées.
