Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book reviews the water-agro-food and socio-eco-system of the Seine River basin (76,000 km2), and offers a historical perspective on the river’s long-term contamination. The Seine basin is inhabited by circa 17 million people and is impacted by intensive agricultural practices and industrial activities. These pressures have gradually affected its hydrological, chemical and ecological functioning, leading to a maximum chemical degradation between the 1960s and the 1990s. Over the last three decades, while major water-quality improvements have been observed, new issues (e.g. endocrine disruptors, microplastics) have also emerged. The state of the Seine River network, from the headwaters to estuary, is increasingly controlled by the balance between pressures and social responses. This socio-ecosystem provides a unique example of the functioning of a territory under heavy anthropogenic pressure during the Anthropocene era. The achievements made were possible due to the long-term PIREN Seine research program, established in 1989 and today part of the French socio-ecological research network “Zones Ateliers”, itself part of the international Long-term Socio-economic and Ecological Research Network (LTSER). Written by experts in the field, the book provides an introduction to the water budget and the territorial metabolism of the Seine basin, and studies the trajectories and impact of various pollutants in the Seine River. It offers insights into the ecological functioning, the integration of agricultural practices, the analysis of aquatic organic matter, and the evolution of fish assemblages in the Seine basin, and also presents research perspectives and approaches to improve the water quality of the Seine River. Given its scope, it will appeal to environmental managers, scientists and policymakers interested in the long-term contamination of the Seine River.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: LES OBJECTIFS DE CETTE ETUDE SONT L'EVALUATION DU NIVEAU DE CONTAMINATION DES SEDIMENTS D'UN COURS D'EAU LE PALAIS EN AVAL D'UN REJET INDUSTRIEL C.G.E.P. ET LA MISE EN EVIDENCE DE L'INFLUENCE DE CERTAINS PARAMETRES PHYSICO-CHIMIQUES SUR LES PHENOMENES D'ADSORPTION ET DE RELARGAGE DES METAUX LOURDS. LA PREMIERE PARTIE SE PROPOSE DE DETERMINER LES TENEURS EN METAUX LOURDS (CD, CU, FE, NI, PB ET ZN) DES SEDIMENTS, PRELEVES EN AVAL DU REJET, ET DE SUIVRE LEURS VARIATIONS TEMPORELLE ET SPATIALE. ELLE S'ACCOMPAGNE DE L'ANALYSE DE L'IMPACT DE POLLUTION ET DE SON EVOLUTION EN FONCTION DE DIVERS EVENEMENTS HYDROLOGIQUES ET CLIMATIQUES QUI INFLUENCENT NON SEULEMENT LE DEBIT DU COURS D'EAU MAIS AUSSI LES PHENOMENES D'ACCUMULATION ET DE RELARGAGE DES METAUX. LA DEUXIEME PARTIE CONSACREE AUX CONDITIONS D'ADSORPTION ET DE RELARGAGE DE CU, CD, ZN ET PB, A ETE REALISEE AU LABORATOIRE SUR DES ECHANTILLONS PRELEVES EN AMONT ET EN AVAL DU REJET. LES RESULTATS OBTENUS CONFIRMENT L'INFLUENCE DU PH, DE LA FORCE IONIQUE ET DE LA TEMPERATURE SUR LES ECHANGES DE METAUX A L'INTERFACE EAU-SEDIMENTS. LES REACTIONS D'ADSORPTION DE CES METAUX SUR LES SEDIMENTS SE DEROULENT EN DEUX ETAPES DISTINCTES: UNE EST RAPIDE (QUELQUES HEURES), LA DEUXIEME EST PLUS LENTE (1-5 JOURS) ET ABOUTIT POUR CU, ZN ET CD A UN ETAT DE PSEUDO-EQUILIBRE. UNE AUGMENTATION DU PH (5-8) FAVORISE LEUR ADSORPTION. LES POURCENTAGES DE RELARGAGE DES METAUX ETUDIES OBTENUS DANS DIFFERENTES CONDITIONS CONFIRMENT LES RESULTATS PRECEDENTS DE L'ADSORPTION; ON OBSERVE EN EFFET UNE DIMINUTION DU RELARGAGE APRES AUGMENTATION DU PH (5-8).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents fascinating new findings on ancient Romano-Egyptian funerary portraits preserved in international collections. Once interred with mummified remains, nearly a thousand funerary portraits from Roman Egypt survive today in museums around the world, bringing viewers face-to-face with people who lived two thousand years ago. Until recently, few of these paintings had undergone in-depth study to determine by whom they were made and how. An international collaboration known as APPEAR (Ancient Panel Paintings: Examination, Analysis, and Research) was launched in 2013 to promote the study of these objects and to gather scientific and historical findings into a shared database. The first phase of the project was marked with a two-day conference at the Getty Villa. Conservators, scientists, and curators presented new research on topics such as provenance and collecting, comparisons of works across institutions, and scientific studies of pigments, binders, and supports. The papers and posters from the conference are collected in this publication, which offers the most up-to-date information available about these fascinating remnants of the ancient world. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/mummyportraits/ and includes zoomable illustrations and graphs. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book.

Researchers working on problems of adaptations in the Holocene, from those of simple hunter-gatherers to those of complex sociopolitical entities like the state, have found this approach suitable for comprehension of both ecological and social aspects of human behavior. This research focus has, however, until recently left virtually un touched a major spatial and temporaI segment of prehistory-the Old World during the Pleistocene. Extant literature on this period, by and large, presents either detailed site speeific accounts or offers continental or even global syntheses that tend to compile site speeific information but do not integrate it into whole c~nstructs of funetioning so ciocuhural entities. This volume presents our current state of knowledge about a variety of regional adaptations that charaeterized prehistoric groups in the Old World before 10,000 B. P. The authors of the chapters consider the behavior of humans rather than that of objects or features and present data and models for variaus aspects of past cultures and for culture change. These presentations integrate findings and understandings derived from a number of related disciplines actively involved in researching the past. Data and interpretations are offered on a range of Old \yorld regions during the PaIeolithic, induding Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe, and chronological coverage spans from the Early to Late PIeisto cene.

Book excerpt: This Open Access book explains that after long periods of prehistoric research in which the importance of the archaeological as well as the natural context of rock art has been constantly underestimated, research has now begun to take this context into focus for documentation, analysis, interpretation and understanding. Human footprints are prominent among the long-time under-researched features of the context in caves with rock art. In order to compensate for this neglect an innovative research program has been established several years ago that focuses on the merging of indigenous knowledge and western archaeological science for the benefit of both sides. The book gathers first the methodological diversity in the analysis of human tracks. Here major representatives of anthropological, statistical and traditional approaches feature the multi-layered methods available for the analysis of human tracks. Second it compiles case studies from around the globe of prehistoric human tracks. For the first time, the most important sites which have been found worldwide are published in a single publication. The third focus of this book is on firsthand experiences of researchers with indigenous tracking experts from around the globe, expounding on how archaeological sciencecan benefit from the ancestral knowledge. This book will be of interest to professional archaeologists, graduate students, ecologists, cultural anthropologists and laypeople, especially those focussing on hunting-gathering and pastoralist communities and who appreciate indigenous knowledge.--
