Book excerpt: Le but poursuivi dans ce travail a été d'installer, utiliser et optimiser une expérience complexe a plusieurs lasers pulses pour obtenir du rayonnement cohérent dans la région de l'ultraviolet du vide entre 105-200 mm. L'expérience a été conçue en utilisant les techniques de l'optique non linéaire de mélange de fréquences dans un gaz en cellule. Le choix de la vapeur de mercure a semblé le milieu non linéaire le plus approprié pour produire de l'ultraviolet avec une bonne efficacité de conversion. Le spectre atomique, riche et étendu, offre la possibilité d'étudier différentes résonances en utilisant des lasers à colorants pompes par yag double. L'extrême sensibilité de l'expérience a permis de mettre en évidence une grande diversité de processus non linéaires en compétition. La deuxième partie de ce travail a été consacrée à l'interprétation théorique de ces résultats, ce qui a nécessité de développer différents calculs. L'expression des ondes harmoniques créées et de la puissance transportée par celles-ci étant établie, les calculs des susceptibilités non linéaires et du facteur d'adaptation de phase ont alors permis de décrire quantitativement les phénomènes non linéaires observés. Grâce aux simulations de gain effectuées on peut proposer une optimisation du systeme non linéaire et envisager désormais l'utilisation du rayonnement créé pour des études de spectroscopie vuv.

Book excerpt: Ce travail est consacré à l'étude des fluorescences résolues en temps, de complexes et d'agrégats de van der Waals excités sélectivement dans l'ultra-violet du vide (vuv). L'excitation vuv est réalisée par un laser pulsé à 125 nm, basé sur des techniques d'optique non linéaire de mélanges de fréquences dans une vapeur de mercure à température ambiante. Nous avons analysé en détail l'évolution de l'intensité vuv en fonction de l'intensité des faisceaux fondamentaux. Des simulations numériques, prenant en compte la géométrie gaussienne des faisceaux ainsi, que les problèmes liés à la réabsorption du rayonnement et aux modifications d'indice de réfraction par effet Kerr, nous ont permis de reproduire le comportement d'une des deux émissions laser. L'intensité de ce laser nous a permis d'exciter le krypton dans l'aile rouge du premier niveau excité métastable kr*(3p2). Nous avons pu ainsi étudier les processus spécifiques de formation de l'excimère kr*2(a1u/o-u), en mettant notamment en évidence le peuplement collisionnel d'un réservoir moléculaire métastable kr*2(1g) en équilibre dynamique avec le réservoir atomique métastable kr*(3p2). Nous nous sommes par ailleurs intéressés aux processus de relaxation radiatifs et collisionnelles dans le xénon excité pour la première fois à un photon sur l'état 5d1/2#1. Nous montrons notamment l'existence de deux canaux de relaxation, dont nous avons étudié le rapport de branchement. Nous présentons également nos premiers résultats sur l'analyse des processus de désexcitation des agrégats de krypton kr#n (n = 2 - 2000). Les mesures des durées de vie des dimères kr*2 éjectés ou solvatés dans l'agrégat sont discutées en tenant compte nos résultats obtenus en phase gazeuse.

Future agreements between nations concerning the reduction of their GHG emissions will - pend upon precise estimates of the present level of these emissions in both natural and managed terrestrial and aquatic environments. From this viewpoint, the present volume should prove to a benchmark contribution because it provides very carefully assessed values for GHG emissions or exchanges between critical climatic zones in aquatic en- ronments and the atmosphere. It also provides unique information on the biases of different measurement methods that may account for some of the contradictory results that have been published recently in the literature on this subject. Not only has a large array of current measurement methods been tested concurrently here, but a few new approaches have also been developed, notably laser measurements of atmospheric CO concentration 2 gradients. Another highly useful feature of this book is the addition of - nitoring and process studies as well as modeling.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
