Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

For more than 40years theories of human action have assumed that cogni tion and action are merely two sides of the same coin. Approaches as different as S-O-R behaviorism,social learning theory, consistency theories,and expectancy value theories of motivation and decision making have one thing in common: they all assume that "thought (or any other type of cognition) can move any thing," that there is a direct path from cognition to behavior. In recent years, we have become more and more aware of the complexities in volved in the relationship between cognition and behavior. People do not always do what they intend to do. Aside from several nonpsychological factors capable of reducing cognition-behavior consistency, there seems to be a set of complex psychological mechanisms which intervene between action-related cognitions, such as beliefs, expectancies, values, and intentions,and the enactment of the be havior suggested by those cognitions. In our recent research we have focused on volitional mechanismus which presumably enhance cognition-behavior consistency by supporting the main tenance of activated intentions and prevent them from being pushed aside by competing action tendencies.

In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

Cependant peu de stratégies ont démontré une efficacité et une mise en pratique facile pour la promotion de l'activité physique auprès de ces patients à risque en médecine générale. Méthodes: L'étude clinique PEPPER est un essai pragmatique randomisé visant à évaluer l'efficacité sur 12 mois, en termes de niveau d'activité physique, d'une intervention basée sur l'information du patient, une prescription écrite personnalisée et quantifiée d'exercice physique, un podomètre, et un carnet de podométrie, chez des patients de 35 à 74 ans présentant des facteurs de risque cardiovasculaires. Cette stratégie sera comparée à la recommandation orale d'exercice physique. Le critère de jugement principal est l'évolution de la dépense énergétique total hebdomadaire mesurée par accéléromètrie. Les critères de jugement secondaires incluent l'évolution à 3 et 12 mois du niveau d'activité physique, de la qualité de vie, de la tension artérielle, du poids, du tour de taille, l'analyse des obstacles perçus à l'activité physique, et de l'observance des patients et des médecins à la stratégie suggérée. 140 patients seront recrutés et suivi par 15 médecins généralistes. Résultats: Les résultats de l'étude sont attendus fin 2016. Si l'intervention s'avère efficace pour augmenter le niveau d'activité physique, l'intérêt de cette stratégie pourrait être confirmé par une étude de plus grande ampleur et de plus long terme examinant l'impact de l'intervention sur l'occurrence de maladies cardiovasculaires.
