Book excerpt: The physics of transition metal oxides has become a central topic of interest to condensed-matter scientists ever since high temperature superconductivity was discovered in hole-doped cuprates with perovskite-like structures. Although the renewed interest in hole-doped perovskite manganites following the discovery of their colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties, began in 1993 about a decade after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity, their first investigation started as early as 1950 and basic theoretical ideas were developed during 1951-1960. Experience in sample preparation and characterization, and in growth of single crystals and epitaxial thin films, gained during the research on high temperature superconductors, and the development of theoretical tools, were very efficiently used in research on CMR manganites. In early nineties it appeared to many condensed matter physicists that although the problem of high temperature superconductivity is a difficult one to solve, a quantitative understanding of CMR phenomena might be well within reach. This book is intended to be an account of the latest developments in the phys ics of CMR manganites. When I planned this book back in 2000, I thought that research on the physics of CMR manganites would be more or less consolidated by the time this would be published. I was obviously very optimistic indeed. We are now in 2003 and we still do not have a quantitative understanding of the central CMR effect. Meanwhile the field has expanded. It is still a very active field of research on both the experimental and theoretical fronts.

The theoretical background required to compute magnetic SANS cross sections and correlation functions related to long-wavelength magnetization structures is laid out. The concepts are scrutinized based on the discussion of experimental neutron data. Regarding prior background knowledge, some familiarity with the basic magnetic interactions and phenomena as well as scattering theory is desired. Besides exposing the different origins of magnetic SANS, and furnishing the basics of the magnetic SANS technique in early chapters, a large part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive treatment of the continuum theory of micromagnetics, as it is relevant for the study of the elastic magnetic SANS cross section. Analytical expressions for the magnetization Fourier components allow to highlight the essential features of magnetic SANS and to analyze experimental data both in reciprocal, as well as in real space. Later chapters provide an overview on the magnetic SANS of nanoparticles and so-called complex systems (e.g., ferrofluids, magnetic steels, spin glasses and amorphous magnets). It is this subfield where major progress is expected to be made in the coming years, mainly via the increased usage of numerical micromagnetic simulations (Chapter 7), which is a very promising approach for the understanding of the magnetic SANS from systems exhibiting nanoscale spin inhomogeneity.

By magnetic structures we refer to the mutual alignment of the magnetic moments of the atoms in a crystal and their overall alignment relative to the crystallographic axes. Some indirect, tentative data on the magnetic structure of magnetic materials can be obtained from research on their magnetic, mechanical, thermal, and other properties. But only neutron diffraction is a unique direct method of detennining the magnetic structure of a crystal. The magnetic structure of more than one thousand crystals with magnetic order has been studied during 30 years of neutron diffraction research made on reactors in a large number of laboratories in the world. The results of this research work are extensively described in the handbook Magnetic Structures Determined by Neutron Diffraction [176]; in the present book, we will often refer to this handbook. The first extensive theoretical generalization of the principles of magnetic neutron diffraction and the results of research on magnetic structures appeared in the book by Yu. A. Izyumov and R. P. Ozerov Magnetic Neutron Diffraction [24, 134].

Book excerpt: The extrinsic electrical transport in manganites of the type (La,A)(Mn,B)O3 (where A = Ca2+, Sr2+ or Pb2+ and B = Ru+, Ta+ or W+) has been studied on bulk ceramic and thin film samples. In particular, its dependence on reversible strain applied with a piezoelectric substrate has been investigated. The first part discusses results on bulk polycrystalline samples, (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3)/LaAlO3 (001) films forming step edge junctions (SEJ) on substrates containing lithographically defined parallel steps and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 (001) films on a bicrystal substrate containing one grain boundary. Magnetoresistance measurements have been carried out in static and in pulsed magnetic fields of μ0H = 50 T. The magnetoconductance G(H) depends on the susceptibility of a magnetically less ordered layer around the grain boundaries. In particular, the second-order grain boundary tunnelling model of Lee et al. [Lee 99] is employed to discuss the magnetoconductance data. The bulk ceramic samples of various compositions and a polycrystalline La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 film show dominating antiferromagnetic interactions in the grain boundary layer, whereas spin-glass-like disorder is concluded from transport data for the (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3)/LaAlO3 (001) SEJ. The bicrystal transport behaviour appears dominated by a small number of magnetic domains next to the bicrystal grain boundary. The second part of this work addresses the influence of a reversible strain on electrical grain boundary transport. The strain is applied through a piezoelectric pseudocubic substrate of PMN-PT (001) to the films. In detail, polycrystalline films, films grown on substrates with parallel steps of several 100 nm height and a film on a substrate containing an intentionally applied scratch were investigated. Large strain response of the junction resistance and the magnetoresistance has been observed for the SEJ films, with strong dependence on the film thickness, and is discussed within the indirect tunnelling model (mentioned above). Polycrystalline films showed a more moderate strain effect.
