Book excerpt: En conduite automobile, le conducteur perçoit son mouvement propre au moyen de processus complexes mettant en jeu l’ensemble de ses organes sensoriels, et des mécanismes cognitifs basés sur l’expérience et l’apprentissage. Dans ces travaux, nous nous sommes focalisés sur la part vestibulaire de la perception du mouvement, et ses interactions avec les autres modalités sensorielles. Nous avons pour cela, mis en œuvre les techniques de stimulation galvanique. Une première partie de l’étude a permis de comprendre et de caractériser les principes de la stimulation galvanique vestibulaire. Nous avons étudié ses effets sur le maintien postural et les réflexes de stabilisation du regard sur des sujets sains, et sur des patients vestibulaires. Puis nous avons observé les processus de combinaison des informations issues des oreilles internes, pour différents types de stimuli et conditions extérieures. Dans une seconde partie, appliquée à la conduite automobile sur simulateur, nous nous sommes intéressés aux phénomènes d’interactions entre les modalités sensorielles inertielles et visuelles. Puis nous avons modulé les entrées vestibulaires au moyen de stimuli galvaniques, afin de qualifier leur importance dans la perception du mouvement, et la conduite. En présence d’informations inertielles plus riche, une perturbation vestibulaire induit moins d’effet, et les résultats tendent à indiquer que le conducteur alloue une importance plus importante aux informations visuelles et proprioceptives. Les accélérations perçues sur sa tête paraissent secondaires. Cette pondération semble dépendre du type de mouvement et de manœuvre, et du contexte perceptif dans lequel se trouve le sujet
