Book excerpt: Even with the significant diversity between groups identified as Asian American, literature continues to place these numerous populations into one group. Combining such diverse groups into one category hides large differences and tends to defeat the purpose of much of the research (Durvasula & Mylvaganam, 1994). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between ethnic identity, acculturation, and self-esteem in second-generation Asian Indian adults based on the assertion that ethnic identity is crucial to self-esteem and psychological functioning of ethnic group members (Phinney, 1990). Using the Suinn-Lew Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (Suinn, Rikard-Figueroa, Lew, & Vigil, 1987), the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1992), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965), correlational analyses were conducted. The results of this study indicate no significant relationship between the participants' ethnic identity and self esteem, ethnic identity and age, or self esteem and age. The data showed that the majority of participants endorsed an integrated level of acculturation. The results provide a preliminary understanding of the way in which this population views and processes its ability to develop a bicultural way of living in the United States.

This study's findings suggest that racial identity development for this population is multifaceted. Furthermore, it seems that second-generation West Indian Americans can maintain ethnocentric biased attitudes about Black Americans yet be aware of and connected to the political implications of being Black in America. Implications for theory, research, and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes qualitative interviews with Indian-American and Indian youths in their 20s and 30s to examine the ways in which they use dating, mating and marriage to renegotiate and reconstruct gender and ethnic identity. This study primarily focuses on how Indian-American youths contend with competing views on dating and marriage from their immigrant parents and mainstream American society. Chapter One locates Indian-American youths' experiences within the current debates on the "new" immigrants, who have arrived since the 1965 loosening of immigration quotas, and recent demands to examine the linkages between ethnicity, gender, and class in individuals' lives. Chapter Two provides a starting point for understanding how Indian-American youths renegotiate gender and ethnicity by examining the conflicts between these youths and their parents over the issues of dating, mating, and marriage. Immigrant parents attempt protect their children from the negative influences of American society by demarcating a line between "good" Indians and "bad" Americans. The subsequent chapters show how Indian-American youths contend with this construction of Indian immigrant identity, using dating, mating, and marriage to craft a distinct social space for themselves. Chapter Three analyzes the ways in which Indian-American youths use dating to explore American social norms, in contrast to Indian youths and immigrant parents who view dating, at most, as a mating by exploring the different ways Indian-American youths accept and challenge their parents' conceptions of married life in their responses to arranged meetings, a "modern" alternative to arranged marriages that allow youths to play a larger role in choosing their own spouses. Chapter Five shifts to the issue of marriage as it examines how Indian-American youths' stake claims about what Indian-ness is through their spousal preferences. Chapter Six considers the different ways that gender and ethnicity affect Indian-American youths' decision-making process regarding dating and marriage, and concludes with some considerations for future research.

This study gathered and reviewed data on the identity development of second generational Asian Indian Americans. Verbal interviews and an art experiential created with six individuals, one male and five females, ranging from age 18 to 40 were collected for an interpretive phenomenological analysis study to examine the lives of those involved. It was hypothesized that a better understanding of personal experiences would be gained, as well as positive and negative experiences shared from their stories. The interviews were found to be successful in a semi-structured, open-ended setting. Family connection and religion represented two major themes gleaned from the study. Identity is a never ending process that is constantly changing.

Given America's increasing ethnic diversity and the large size of the Mexican-origin population, an investigation of how Mexican immigrants and their descendants achieve upward mobility and enter the middle class is long overdue. Barrios to Burbs offers a new understanding of the Mexican American experience. Vallejo explores the challenges that accompany rapid social mobility and examines a new indicator of incorporation, a familial obligation to "give back" in social and financial support. She investigates the salience of middle-class Mexican Americans' ethnic identification and details how relationships with poorer coethnics and affluent whites evolve as immigrants and their descendants move into traditionally white middle-class occupations. Disputing the argument that Mexican communities lack high quality resources and social capital that can help Mexican Americans incorporate into the middle class, Vallejo also examines civic participation in ethnic professional associations embedded in ethnic communities.
