Book Synopsis The Eternal Table by : Karima Moyer-Nocchi
Download or read book The Eternal Table written by Karima Moyer-Nocchi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eternal Table: A Cultural History of Food in Rome is the first concise history of the food, gastronomy, and cuisine of Rome spanning from pre-Roman to modern times. It is a social history of the Eternal City seen through the lens of eating and feeding, as it advanced over the centuries in a city that fascinates like no other. The history of food in Rome unfolds as an engaging and enlightening narrative, recounting the human partnership with what was raised, picked, fished, caught, slaughtered, cooked, and served, as it was experienced and perceived along the continuum between excess and dearth by Romans and the many who passed through. Like the city itself, Rome’s culinary history is multi-layered, both vertically and horizontally, from migrant shepherds to the senatorial aristocracy, from the papal court to the flow of pilgrims and Grand Tourists, from the House of Savoy and the Kingdom of Italy to Fascism and the rise of the middle classes. The Eternal Table takes the reader on a culinary journey through the city streets, country kitchens, banquets, markets, festivals, osterias, and restaurants illuminating yet another facet of one of the most intriguing cities in the world.
Download or read book Dining with John written by Esther Kobel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the accounts of communal meals and the metaphorical use of food and drink language in the narrative world of the Gospel of John. It argues that the Johannine community regularly gathered for communal meals in which the food and drink on the menu would have taken on a spiritual significance far exceeding the physical sustenance. The study employs a socio-rhetorical methodology and consequently moves from text to context. It tentatively describes the texts’ influence on the formation of early Christian identity and suggests that the Johannine meal accounts provide a way to imagine the demographic composition of the community and its historical context.

The vibrant mood once prevalent in Paradise has given way to listlessness and gloom. But what if the key to reigniting joy and inspiration lies in an age-old universal tradition: sharing a meal? That’s right, a food contest! Celestial Dining to Entice: An Arab Food Contest in Paradise aims to shift the narrative from despair to delight. Scholars present their chosen medieval Arab dishes, each accompanied by personal stories that reveal who they are and why they’ve selected their dish. Book excerpt: The disconnection in the Donnellys had reached an inhuman scale. Without a shred of truth or dignity, their self-serving alienation minimizes our own interactions or lack there of. The frightening evolution of their respective plans is written down and dirty. Without using the tawdry tool of conjuring up bloody carnage, realism fl ourished in full color using only a subtle tug to your own imagination to visualize something even worse. The uncanny is tethered in the backseat until the entire clan arrives at the second reunion. After relishing plates of steaming turkey, satisfying answers to most of the enigmatic questions are served up along with the after dinner liqueur. Almost every scene is plot derived. The ‘treading water’ problem found in a lot of popular fi ction does not exist here. There is no fl oundering along in a side eddy to fi ll you with boring and nonessential information. The narrative is concise, and the story races along as fast as the tricked out Jaguar one of the characters in the novel owns. The sparse rest areas are only there for ambience to encourage terror or revulsion. After the main story ends, a short story begins dealing with a ghost town called Rickert Basin near Waterbury, Vermont. It is a short prequel to introduce a shadowy character in the background of the main text. He’ll be one of the four individuals in the novel to continue through-out the series
Book Synopsis Word of Mouth by : Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson
Download or read book Word of Mouth written by Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, more than ever, talking about food improves the eating of it. Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson argues that conversation can even trump consumption. Where many works look at the production, preparation, and consumption of food, Word of Mouth captures the language that explains culinary practices. Explanation is more than an elaboration here: how we talk about food says a great deal about the world around us and our place in it. What does it mean, Ferguson asks, to cook and consume in a globalized culinary world subject to vertiginous change? Answers to this question demand a mastery of food talk in all its forms and applications. To prove its case, Word of Mouth draws on a broad range of cultural documents from interviews, cookbooks, and novels to comic strips, essays, and films. Although the United States supplies the primary focus of Ferguson's explorations, the French connection remains vital. American food culture comes of age in dialogue with French cuisine even as it strikes out on its own. In the twenty-first century, culinary modernity sets haute food against haute cuisine, creativity against convention, and the individual dish over the communal meal. Ferguson finds a new level of sophistication in what we thought that we already knew: the real pleasure in eating comes through knowing how to talk about it.

Download or read book The Eternal Food written by R. S. Khare and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-08-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary approaches presented here investigate food in India and Sri Lanka for its wide ranging cultural meaning and uses. The authors examine food in religious and literary contexts, where saints, ritualists, poets, and the divine often provide grounds for a practically inexhaustible hermeneutics. The Eternal Food focuses on reflexive cultural expressions and personal experiences that food elicits in the region. Concerned with food as an "essence" and as an essential experience, the authors give special attention to Hindu saints for whom food, firmly grounded in moral ideals and practice, represents a cosmic divine principle at one level, and a most immediate and intimate material reality at another. In the cultural diversity of India, the authors work with several conceptual models and meanings of food. They demonstrate how it reflects common social understandings about social caste, the cure and prevention of ailments, its ability to alter moods and motivations, or affect innate personal dispositions, personal spiritual pursuits and attainments. In its sweep and depth, food presents a powerful cultural lens for seeing how practical, ritual, and spiritual spheres of life conjoin.
