Book Synopsis Marine and Coastal Protected Areas by : Rodney V. Salm
Download or read book Marine and Coastal Protected Areas written by Rodney V. Salm and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2000 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new edition of the classic textbook on marine protected area (MPA) management in the tropics, originally produced as an output of the Bali World Parks Congress in 1982. Approaches to planning and managing MPAs have evolved considerably. Major advances include innovative financing mechanisms, partnerships with the private sector and NGOs, and collaborative management between government and coastal communities. These advances have brought new approaches for MPA establishment and management that are more participatory, involving communities through interaction and collaboration rather than prescription. With new case studies and illustrations, the guide comes in a water-resistant cover for field use. It is intended for those who plan individual and/or national MPA systems and gives philosophical context for MPAs along with some basic principles and approaches.
Book Synopsis Global Re-introduction Perspectives by : Pritpal S. Soorae
Download or read book Global Re-introduction Perspectives written by Pritpal S. Soorae and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2010 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the second issue in the Global Re-introduction Perspectives series and has been produced in the same standardized format as the previous one. The case-studies are arranged in the following order: Introduction, Goals, Success Indicators, Project Summary, Major Difficulties Faced, Major Lessons Learned, Success of Project with reasons for success or failure. For this second issue we received a total of 72 case-studies compared to 62 in the last issue. These case studies cover the following taxa as follows: invertebrates (9), fish (6), amphibians (5), reptiles (7), birds (13), mammals (20) and plants (12) ... We hope the information presented in this book will provide a broad global perspective on challenges facing re-introduction projects trying to restore biodiversity."--Pritpal S. Soorae.

Book Synopsis Food Processing Technology by : P.J. Fellows
Download or read book Food Processing Technology written by P.J. Fellows and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Food processing technology was quickly adopted as the standard text by many food science and technology courses. This completely revised and updated third edition consolidates the position of this textbook as the best single-volume introduction to food manufacturing technologies available. This edition has been updated and extended to include the many developments that have taken place since the second edition was published. In particular, advances in microprocessor control of equipment, 'minimal' processing technologies, functional foods, developments in 'active' or 'intelligent' packaging, and storage and distribution logistics are described. Technologies that relate to cost savings, environmental improvement or enhanced product quality are highlighted. Additionally, sections in each chapter on the impact of processing on food-borne micro-organisms are included for the first time. - Introduces a range of processing techniques that are used in food manufacturing - Explains the key principles of each process, including the equipment used and the effects of processing on micro-organisms that contaminate foods - Describes post-processing operations, including packaging and distribution logistics
Book Synopsis Multiple Stressors: A Challenge for the Future by : Carmel Mothersill
Download or read book Multiple Stressors: A Challenge for the Future written by Carmel Mothersill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecotoxiclogical risk from multiple stressors covers any situation where org- isms are exposed to a combination of environmental stressors. These include physical and chemical pollutants as well as other stressors such as parasites and environmental impact (e. g. , climate change or habitat loss). The combi- tion of stressors can result in increased risk to organisms (either additive or synergistic effects) or decreased effects (protective or antagonistic effects). The multiple stressor challenge is an international, multi-disciplinary problem requiring an international, multi-disciplinary approach. The c- rent approach to multiple stressors is to examine one stressor at a time and assume additivity. Little work has been done on combinations of stressors such that potential interactions can be determined. The problem is very complex. Multiple stressors pose a whole spectrum of challenges that range from basic science to regulation, policy and gove- ance. The challenges raise fundamental questions about our understanding of the basic biological response to stressors, as well as the implications of those uncertainties in environmental risk assessment and management. In addition to the great breadth, there is also great depth in the research ch- lenges, largely due to the complexity of the issues. From a basic science point of view, many of the mechanisms and processes under investigation are at the cutting edge of science — involving new paradigms such as genomic ins- bility and bystander effects.

Book Synopsis Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration by : Ulrich Schwevers
Download or read book Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration written by Ulrich Schwevers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review of current systems for fish protection and downstream migration. It offers the first systematic description of the currently available technologies for fish protection at hydropower intakes, including accurate and timely data collected by the authors and other researchers. It describes how to design and test them in agreement with the guidelines established from the EU Water Framework Directive. The book includes important information about fish biology, with a special focus on swimming and migration mechanisms. It offers a robust bridge between concepts in applied ecology and civil hydraulic engineering, thus providing biologists and hydraulic engineers with an authoritative reference guide to both the theory and practice of fish protection. It is also of interest for planners, public authorities as well as environmental consultants
Book Synopsis Pasture Landscapes and Nature Conservation by : Bernd Redecker
Download or read book Pasture Landscapes and Nature Conservation written by Bernd Redecker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-05-28 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main problems and aims of nature conservation in Europe is to protect semi-open landscapes. The development during the past decades is characterized by an ongoing intensivation of land use on the one hand, and an increasing number of former meadows and pastures lying fallow caused by changing economic conditions on the other hand. In several countries the estabishment of larger "pasture landscapes" with a mixed character of open grassland combined with shrubs and forests has been recognized as one solution to this problem. The book gives an overview of the European projects concerning to this topic - nature conservation policy and strategies, scientific results and practical experiences creating large scale grazing systems.
