Book excerpt: "The application of transmit diversity techniques such as Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) to the downlink of multiuser wireless communications systems has received considerable attention. The main advantage of such an approach is its ability to provide diversity gains through the use of multiple antennas only at the transmitting side without significantly increasing the complexity at the receiving end. Among the many multiple access techniques proposed, Multi-Carrier (MC) and Direct Sequence (DS) Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques are known as the most promising candidates for future broadband mobile communication networks. In MC and DS-CDMA systems or combination thereof, employing transmit diversity, the spatial diversity gains can only be realized if the underlying channels are accurately acquired at the receiver. Furthermore, such systems suffer from high computational complexity which should be properly addressed for practical implementations. Motivated by these observations, in the first part of this dissertation, we introduce the chip-level ST block coding scheme for DS-CDMA systems. For this scheme, we address the problems of single-user detection as well as blind channel estimation, and we show that chip-level coding does not suffer from antenna order ambiguity. Moreover, we demonstrate that chip-level schemes exhibit low decoding delay and allow for the design of adaptive single-user detectors with improved short data-record performance characteristics compared to their symbol-level counterparts. In the second part of this dissertation, we present a novel transmission scheme for the downlink of MC-CDMA systems with transmit diversity that is based on chip-level Space-Frequency (SF) block coding. For this scheme, we investigate the problem of blind channel estimation when the received signal processing is done (i) pre-Fast Fourier Transform (FFT); and (ii) post-FFT. We propose two blind channel estimation algorithms based on subspace and Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) principles. Moreover, we present an analytical performance analysis of the proposed algorithms by investigating the bias as well as the finite data record mean-square error of the channel estimates. Our analysis shows that SFBC MC-CDMA systems do not suffer from antenna order ambiguity. In addition, to benchmark the accuracy of our estimation algorithms, we derive the corresponding Cramer-Rao bounds (CRB) based on a novel approach that assumes the knowledge of only the spreading code of the desired user. Our approach has the advantage of providing lower bounds which are tighter than the CRBs with known signatures. We also study the problem of single user detection for downlink transmissions to address the issue of multiuser interference. In the case of the post-FFT approach, we take advantage of the SFBC-induced signal structure to derive linear single-user detectors with improved performance in short data-record situations. Finally, in order to address the issue of computational complexity, we exploit the structure of the covariance matrix of the received signal to simplify the computations involved in estimating the channel, and forming the detector."--

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled New Channel Estimation and Multiuser Detection Algorithms For Multicarrier (MC)-CDMA Communications Systems submitted by Cheng Hui for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in September 2005 Multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) has been recently proposed as an efficient multicarrier transmission scheme for supporting multiple access communications. However, MC-CDMA is an interference-limited system, which is rather sensitive to multiple access interference (MAI). Multiuser detection techniques are critical to mitigate MAI. Meanwhile, channel estimation is essential to the coherent detection of MC-CDMA signals. This thesis is dedicated to new channel estimation and multiuser detection algorithms for wireless MC-CDMA systems. New blind constrained minimum output energy (CMOE)-based and subspace-based multiuser detection and channel estimation algorithms are first developed. In particular, a new blind CMOE receiver is proposed. The proposed CMOE receiver is based on recursive least square (RLS) updating, and it minimizes the receiver''s output energy while preserving the components of the desired signal. iiiBy imposing quadratic weight constraint, the CMOE detector is made more robust against the channel and correlation matrix estimation errors, and a better performance over the standard CMOE detector is obtained. The steady-state signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance of the blind adaptive CMOE and training adaptive minimum mean squared-error (MMSE) detectors is also analyzed. A blind mode decision-directed MMSE detector is then proposed to further improve the performance of the blind CMOE receivers. Simulation results show that the blind mode decision-directed MMSE detector substantially improves the system performance when the frequency-selective channel is slowly varying. Blind and group-blind subspace-based MMSE multiuser detectors are also developed, where the channel coefficients can be blindly estimated. The proposed group-blind multiuser detector considerably outperforms the blind subspace-based method in uplink MC-CDMA channels. It exploits the spreading codes of a group of known users within the cell, while suppressing the unknown interferers from other cells using the MMSE principle. The adaptive implementation of the blind and group-blind multiuser detectors is also studied based on signal and noise subspace tracking algorithms. Numerical simulations show that the convergence of the projection approximation subspace tracking with deflation (PASTd) algorithm is quite slow, while the more complicated bi-iteration square-root singular value decomposition (Bi-SVD) signal subspace tracker presents performance close to the solution with exact singular value decomposition (SVD). MC-CDMA systems are sensitive to narrowband interference (NBI). A new robust channel estimator and a robust multiuser detector are developed to combat time-varying NBI. In particular, an efficient weighted recursive least M-estimate (WRLM) algorithm is proposed to recursively estimate the frequency-selective ivfading channel while providing improved robustness to the time-varying NBI. Furthermore, a weighted least M-estimate (WLM) detector is developed to jointly suppress MAI and time-varying NBI. Simulations show that the proposed robust channel estimator and multiuser d

Book excerpt: Providing Internet services to mobile users has become the most significant topic within the telecommunications research community in the past few years. As a result several books have been published by the experts from the cellular communications world and researchers from the computer science field. While cellular books cover architecture and air interface of the second- and third-generation wireless systems, computer networks and Internet books overview some fundamentals and protocols on migrating the fix-IP into mobile environment. Other books that claimed to cover the both topics in the past, however, also failed to provide a complete literature on wireless IP, because of focusing on either access technology or network protocols. The Wireless Mobile Internet - Architectures, Protocols, and Services elegantly bridges this gap and therefore provides the first complete literature for the wireless Internet both describing the standard activities and the current status of the wireless IP, as well as detailing network models and specific techniques. While some chapters in the Wireless Mobile Internet describe the standard activities and the current status of the wireless IP other chapters detail network models and specific techniques that usually approached by academic researchers. * Comprehensive yet simple understanding of the wireless Internet through usage of more than 250 conceptual and numerical result figures * Logical organization for customized use as a reference book on the state-of-the-art technology for wireless Internet, a text for fundamental components of the wireless Internet, standards, and a guideline for advanced research topics * Provides an easy-to-read but complete reference for core network and access technology of 2G and 3G cellular systems as well as related standards * Illustrates the main features of future mobile networks * Offers a thorough literature on essentials for a mobile network: quality of service, traffic modelling and management, mobility management, transport protocols, and network protocols * Uniquely covers all relevant telecommunication access and network technologies for wireless Internet from wireless LAN to satellite Essential reading for researchers from industry and academia in the field of wireless cellular networks and Internet, practicing engineers who need a single text on the subject as well as senior level undergraduates and first-year postgraduates.
