Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of Alsek River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (fish age-1.2 and older) and sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka (fish 350 mm mid eye tail fork length [METF] or greater) will be estimated, in 2022, using 2-event mark–recapture methods. The mark–recapture study will occur upstream of the commercial set gillnet fishery at river kilometer 19 (hereafter referred to as “Kilometer 19”). Immigrating Chinook and sockeye salmon caught at Kilometer 19 will be marked before being released. The second sampling event will consist of inspecting Chinook and sockeye salmon for marks upriver at Klukshu River and Village Creek enumeration projects, as well as on various Alsek River salmon spawning grounds, hereafter referred to as “headwaters”. Age, sex, and length composition of Chinook and sockeye salmon will also be estimated. Tissues will be collected from all sockeye salmon captured at Kilometer 19 for a mixed stock genetic analysis and for a genetic mark–recapture expansion of the Klukshu and Nesketahin stocks. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations use these data to make terminal and regional management decisions. The Pacific Salmon Commission uses the Chinook salmon data for coastwide management and stock assessment through the Chinook Technical Committee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling majors ecology book continues to present ecology as a series of problems for readers to critically analyze. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. The field package also includes The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

Book excerpt: From one of Canada's greatest journalists comes the epic story of British Columbia's Fraser River. As the dust jacket for the originally edition-published half a century ago-declared:"Shaped like a giant fishhook stuck into the Pacific Ocean, the mighty Fraser is one of the most important rivers of North America, politically, economically, and historically. Compelling the reader's interest with the power and vigour of his narrative, Bruce Hutchison explores the Fraser's romantichistory as one of Canada's two main channels of civilization. The Fraser's story is that of British Columbia and its people, and Mr. Hutchison shows that it provides some of the richest yet least known chapters in Canadian history. These he unrolls in an unforgettable panorama, from the days ofSpanish discovery to the story of the city of Vancouver, the river's most remarkable product. In its gold, its steamboating, its fur; as a fisherman's paradise, and as the largest untapped source of electrical power in North America-the story of the Fraser is one of colour and high drama. It isexciting reading."The Wynford Edition includes a new introduction by Vaughn Palmer, one of Canada's foremost political journalists and a winner of the Bruce Hutchison Award. Palmer's introduction puts both the book and Hutchison's career in historical context for modern readers.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, this issue of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture highlights the major role and challenges facing fisheries and aquaculture worldwide. With a steadily rising demand for fish and fish products, the supply of fish as human food hit a record high in 2008, underlining its significance in contributing to food security and nutrition as a source of high-quality, affordable animal protein in particular. International trade in fish also topped previous values, pointing to the sector's continued important contribution to economic expansion and human well-being. Aquaculture, despite a falling growth rate in recent years, remains the fastest-growing animal-food-producing sector and is set to overtake capture fisheries as a source of food fish. Overall production of the sector continues to grow. This publication analyses and reviews the latest available global statistics and trends in fisheries and aquaculture. It explores the important, yet often underestimated, role of inland fisheries, particularly in many small communities where they make a vital contribution to poverty alleviation and livelihood security. A broader look at the issues affecting fisheries and aquaculture emphasizes the growing need to focus on the many facets of policy and governance and examines the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, quality certification and product traceability on the sector. Also published in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
