Download or read book The Outlook for Particleboard Manufacture in the Northern Rocky Mountain Region written by Richard P. Withycombe and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National demands for particleboard panel products and raw materials supply are projected for the 1970's. Demand for particleboard (which includes fiberboard and structural particleboard) is expected to continue rapid growth through the decade. new plant capacity will use dry mill residues wherever possible. Several new plants are expected in the South, and three or four each in California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northern Rocky Mountains. In the last of the decade, expanding production will turn to use of forest residues, which will shift plant expansion toward the major markets and away from the Northwest. Analysis of production costs indicate that in the Northern Rocky Mountains plants utilizing forest residues cannot profitably compete with plants taht utilize mill residues until the existing mill residues are exhausted.

Book excerpt: This report provides a general overview of current log sort yard operations in the United States, including an extensive literature review and information collected during on-site visits to several operations throughout the nation. Log sort yards provide many services in marketing wood and fiber by concentrating, merchandising, processing, sorting, and adding value to logs. Such operations supply forest products firms with desired raw materials, which helps improve their bottom line by reducing the number of marginal logs processed. Ultimately, sorting logs leads to better use of the available timber resources. Successful log sort yards are self-sufficient and have well-established markets and a steady supply of wood. Log sort yard concepts and analyses described in this report have broad applications.

Book Synopsis Retrieving Residue After Overstory Removal in True Fir, Northeastern California by : Gary Fiddler
Download or read book Retrieving Residue After Overstory Removal in True Fir, Northeastern California written by Gary Fiddler and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overstory removal cutting, the most common means of converting old-growth stands to younggrowth stands in California, can produce excessive residues that pose management problems. Utilization is an attractive option for managing residues. However, the cost of residue retrieval and utilization is often prohibitive. Residue retrieval by a private contractor was studied to determine production rates and effectiveness after overstory removal on three blocks in true fir stands in northeastern California. Residues were inventoried before and after residue retrieval to determine the amount removed. The contractor removed 97 percent of the residue specified for retrieval and 68 percent of residue smaller than specifications, for a total of 136 dry tons (123 t). Residues down to about 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter were utilized for fuelwood. Production rates -- 0.53 ton (0.48 t) per man-hour and 0.67 ton (0.61 t) per equipment-hour -- were low (costs high) for several reasons, including the small size of residues and restricted yarding patterns. Damage to the residual stand was negligible.
